National District Mineral Foundation Summit 2026

♦ Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy inaugurated the National District Mineral Foundation Summit 2026 on March 23 at the SCOPE Convention Centre in New Delhi, with a focus on improving the utilisation of funds in mining-impacted areas. The two-day event concludes on 24 March. The summit is centred around enhancing the outcome-driven use of District Mineral Foundation funds, particularly in regions covered under the Aspirational District Programme and Aspirational Block Programme. It seeks to strengthen coordination among various levels of government while identifying key policy improvements. ♦ The summit aims to strengthen coordination between the Centre, States and district administrations while identifying reforms for better planning and implementation of DMF funds. The focus is on ensuring that these funds are utilised efficiently to deliver measurable improvements in socio-economic conditions in mining-affected areas.

♦ Japan has identified a vast deposit of rare earth elements nearly 6,000 metres beneath the Pacific Ocean near Minamitorishima island. The discovery, described as a “rare earth giant,” could significantly reshape global resource security by providing a long-term supply of critical minerals essential for modern technologies. ♦ Scale and Composition of the Discovery the deposit contains over 16 million tonnes of rare earth-rich mud, including key elements such as yttrium and dysprosium. These materials are crucial for manufacturing high-performance magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines and advanced electronics. Estimates suggest that the deposit could meet global demand for some of these elements for up to 700 years.

China

♦ China emerged as India’s third-largest export destination in February 2026, overtaking the Netherlands. Exports to China rose sharply by 32.4% year-on-year to $1.67 billion, supported by stronger demand in segments such as electronics and marine products. However, the surge in exports was accompanied by a parallel rise in imports from China, which climbed 30.5% to $11.95 billion, widening India’s trade deficit with its largest trading partner. ♦ In fact, India’s trade deficit with China crossed the $100 billion mark during April–February of the current financial year, underscoring the structural imbalance in bilateral trade despite improved export performance. ♦ Meanwhile, exports to the United States, India’s largest market, continued their downward trajectory. Shipments fell 12.88% year-on-year in February to $6.88 billion, extending a decline that began in September. The drop comes amid tariff volatility, with US duties previously as high as 50% before being reduced to 10% from February 24 for a temporary 150-day period.a

Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)

♦ In India, over 81 percent of rural households now have access to tap water under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), said Minister of State for Jal Shakti V. Somanna. He also stated that since the launch of JJM in August 2019, more than 12.58 crore rural households have been provided tap water connections. As of March 3, 2026, around 15.82 crore of the total 19.36 crore rural households have access to piped water supply at home. ♦ At the start of the mission, only 3.23 crore households, or 16.7 percent, had tap water connections. ♦ The government has proposed an allocation of Rs.67,670 crore for the Jal Jeevan Mission in the Budget Estimates for 2026–27. The next phase of the mission will focus on improving infrastructure quality and operation and maintenance of rural water supply systems through public participation under the “Jan Bhagidhari” approach.

తెలంగాణలో విద్యలో వివిధ సామాజికవర్గాల మధ్య అంతరాలు తీవ్రంగా ఉన్నాయని సమగ్ర కుటుంబ సర్వే అధ్యయన నివేదిక పేర్కొంది. జనరల్‌ కేటగిరీ కంటే ఎస్సీ, ఎస్టీ, బీసీల్లో ఈ పరిస్థితి ఎక్కువగా ఉన్నట్లు గుర్తించింది. ఎస్టీ మహిళల్లో అత్యధికంగా 83 శాతం మంది పదో తరగతికి మించి చదువుకోలేదు. అదే ఓసీ బ్రాహ్మణ వర్గంలో ఈ శాతం 36.2 మాత్రమే. సర్వేలో పాల్గొన్నవారిలో 14 లక్షల మంది తమకు కులం లేదని చెప్పారు. ప్రజల సామాజిక, ఆర్థిక, విద్య, ఉపాధి తదితర అంశాలపై సమగ్ర కుటుంబ సర్వేను రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం 2024 ఆఖర్లో నిర్వహించింది. బలహీనవర్గాలకు వివిధ పథకాల అమలు, ఉపాధి, రాజకీయ అవకాశాలు లభించేలా కార్యక్రమాలు చేపట్టడానికి ఈ సర్వే దోహదపడుతుందని ప్రభుత్వం పేర్కొంది. 57 కీలక ప్రశ్నలు, మరికొన్ని అనుబంధ ప్రశ్నలు కలిపి 75 అంశాలపై 1,12,36,489 కుటుంబాల (97.1 శాతం) వివరాలు సేకరించింది.
