♦ IIT Madras Professor Balaraman Ravindran is among a global group of 40 distinguished experts recommended by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to serve on a new independent scientific panel on Artificial Intelligence. Guterres submitted for the consideration of the UN General Assembly the list of 40 distinguished individuals from every region to serve on the new Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence for a three-year term from the date of appointment. ♦ Balaraman Ravindran heads the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI), the Wadhwani School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (WSAI), the Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (RBCDSAI) and the Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI) at IIT Madras. ♦ The members of the Panel will serve in their personal capacity – independent of any government, company, or institution. The Panel's first report is expected in time to inform the Global Dialogue on AI Governance in 2026 July.  ♦ The secretariat of the Panel will be coordinated by the Secretary General's Special Envoy on Technology, Amandeep Singh Gill.

♦ Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinched their second Women’s Premier League title at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi, Vadodara on 5 February 2026. RCB achieved the target of 204 runs for the loss of four wickets in 19.4 overs. Earlier, put into bat first, Delhi Capitals posted 203 runs for the loss of four in the stipulated 20 overs. ♦ Smriti Mandhana’s Bengaluru topped the leaderboard with six wins in eight league matches to qualify directly for the final, while Jemimah Rodrigues’ Delhi defeated Gujarat Giants in the Eliminator to secure a spot in the finals. ♦ With this title win, RCB now has joint-most WPL trophies (2), sharing the honour with Mumbai Indians. Previously RCB won the WPL title n 2024. ♦ Smriti also became the third Indian, and fifth player overall, to breach the 1000-run mark in WPL. She joins Nat Sciver-Brunt, Meg Lanning, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Shafali.

India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)

♦ India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) signed the Terms of Reference (ToR) for negotiations on a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on 5 February 2026, marking a significant step towards deepening economic ties between the two sides. The ToR will guide the scope, structure, and modalities of the India-GCC FTA negotiations, formally initiating discussions aimed at a comprehensive trade pact. ♦ Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said the proposed FTA would act as a “force multiplier for the global good,” bringing greater predictability and stability to trade relations between India and the GCC.  ♦ India’s trade with the GCC stood at USD 178.56 billion in FY 2024-25, accounting for 15.42 percent of India’s total global trade. Over the past five years, bilateral trade has grown at an average annual rate of 15.3 percent. ♦ India’s key exports to the GCC include engineering goods, rice, textiles, machinery, and gems and jewellery, while imports primarily comprise crude oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG), petrochemicals, and precious metals such as gold. ♦ The GCC, comprising six countries, represents a combined market of about 61.5 million people and a GDP of USD 2.3 trillion, ranking ninth globally. The region is also a major source of foreign direct investment for India, with cumulative investments exceeding USD 31.14 billion as of September 2025. Nearly ten million members of the Indian diaspora live in GCC countries, further strengthening people-to-people ties alongside the strong presence of Indian businesses across the region.

♦ Defence Minister Rajnath Singh flagged off a joint mountaineering expedition to Mount Aconcagua in Argentina from South Block, New Delhi on 5 February 2026. Rising to 6,961 metres, Mount Aconcagua is the highest peak in South America and the tallest mountain outside the Asian continent. ♦ The expedition is being jointly undertaken by the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi, and the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM&WS), Pahalgam. The mission aims to enhance high-altitude mountaineering expertise and strengthen India’s presence in global adventure and mountain exploration. ♦ The six-member expedition team comprises trained instructors Col Hem Chandra Singh, Capt G. Santhosh Kumar, Deep Bahadur Sahi, Vinod Gusain, Naib Subedar Bhupinder Singh and Havildar Ramesh Kumar. The team began its journey on February 6, 2026, and the expedition is expected to conclude by the end of the month.

Bharat Taxi

♦ Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah formally launched Bharat Taxi, India’s first cooperative-based taxi service, in New Delhi on 5 February 2026. This  initiative aimed at providing ownership rights and welfare benefits to drivers working in the unorganised sector. ♦ Amit Shah said that within three years, Bharat Taxi would expand nationwide, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from Dwarka to Kamakhya, and emerge as a major platform for the welfare of taxi drivers, referred to as Sarathis. ♦ The Minister said Bharat Taxi has signed Memorandums of Understanding with nine major institutions, including Delhi Traffic Police, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), Airports Authority of India (AAI), State Bank of India (SBI), IFFCO Tokio Insurance, Paytm, and GMR. These partnerships aim to improve operational integration, digital payments, insurance coverage, financing, airport mobility and last-mile connectivity. ♦ Under the MoU with Delhi Traffic Police, Bharat Taxi will operate prepaid taxi booths at 21 locations in Delhi and run a Joint Command and Control Centre for real-time monitoring, SOS alerts and emergency response. Agreements with DMRC and AAI will facilitate last-mile connectivity at metro stations and regulated operations at airports across the country.

Global Teacher Prize 2026

♦ Indian teacher Rouble Nagi received the Global Teacher Prize 2026 during the World Government Summit on 5 February 2026, winning the one million dollar award presented by GEMS Education in its tenth edition. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, presented the Global Teacher Prize 2026 to Rouble Nagi. ♦ Nagi was honoured in recognition of her efforts to transform neglected walls into interactive educational murals that teach reading, writing, and arithmetic, alongside key concepts related to public health and environmental awareness. Over the past two decades, she has helped integrate more than one million children into formal education by employing art as an educational tool. She was selected from more than 5,000 nominations and applications received from 139 countries. ♦ Through her foundation, the Rouble Nagi Art Foundation, she established more than 800 educational centres across India, providing safe and inspiring spaces in over 100 low-income communities and villages. These centres enable out-of-school children to begin structured learning and gradually return to formal education, while supporting enrolled students through remedial education programmes, psychosocial support, and creative activities. ♦ The Global Teacher Prize, presented by GEMS Education and organised by the Varkey Foundation in collaboration with UNESCO during the World Government Summit, honours exceptional educators for their outstanding contributions to the teaching profession.
