Prime Minister Narendra Modi

♦ Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first bamboo-based ethanol plant in Assam’s Golaghat district on 14 September 2025.   ♦ He also laid the foundation stone for a Rs.7,230-crore polypropylene plant at the Numaligarh Refinery. ♦ The project will be established near the Rs.5,000-crore bioethanol plant, a “zero-waste” facility described as the world’s first to produce ethanol from green bamboo.

Preeti Saran

♦ Preeti Saran, a former senior Indian diplomat was elected as the chair of the prestigious UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) on 14 September 2025. ♦ The CESCR is a key body of the United Nations that has been tasked with overseeing the implementation of international covenants on economic and social rights by the member nations. ♦ The CESCR operates under the administrative control of the UN Human Rights Commission. ♦ In her distinguished career with the Indian Foreign Service spread over 36 years, Ambassador Saran served in various capacities in India as well as in Indian missions in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. ♦ She was also India’s Ambassador to Vietnam and Consul General in Toronto. ♦ Her other notable overseas assignments include her stints at the Indian missions in Moscow, Dhaka, Cairo and Geneva.

Satya Srinivas was appointed Executive Director (India) at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on 14 September 2025. ♦ He is a 1991 batch IRS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre. ♦ Satya Srinivas, who is currently serving as Special Secretary in the Department of Commerce, will hold the post until his superannuation on February 28, 2026.

Minakshi Hooda and Jaismine Lamboria

♦ Minakshi Hooda and Jaismine Lamboria won gold medals in the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool on 14 September 2025. ♦ Meenakshi Hooda defeated 3-time world champion Kazakhstan's Nazym Kyzaibay with 4-1 in the final match of the 48kg weight category. ♦ Meenakshi is the second Indian boxer to win a gold medal in this tournament.  ♦ Before Meenakshi, Jasmine Lamboria defeated Poland's Julia Szeremeta with a 4-1 split decision in 57 kg. ♦ Nupur Sheoran took silver in the 80+kg division, after losing to Poland’s Agata Kaczmarska in the final. ♦ Pooja Rani secured bronze in the women’s 80kg event.

Research and ratings firm Crisil

♦ Research and ratings firm Crisil said that the headline inflation during 2025-26 is projected to be 3.2 percent, lower than its earlier estimate of 3.5 percent. ♦ In its latest report, Crisil said that the moderation implies a decline of 140 basis points in CPI inflation during this financial year, which is likely to give space for monetary easing. ♦ It said the RBI may cut rates by another 25 basis points this year. ♦ CPI inflation inched up to 2.1 percent in August 2025, from 1.6 per cent in July, moving above the RBI tolerance threshold of two percent.

Coast Guard Global Summit

♦ India has won the bid to host the 5th Coast Guard Global Summit in 2027. ♦ The announcement was made at 4th Coast Guard Global Summit in Rome, Italy. ♦ A two-member Indian ICG delegation, led by Director General ICG Paramesh Sivamani delivered a lecture titled ‘Guardians Against the Blaze: ICG’s Tactical Response to Fire Emergencies’, showcasing India’s expertise and constructive role in advancing maritime safety and security.  ♦ The summit attended by delegates from 115 countries and international organisations was co-chaired by Italy & Japan and emphasised on collective approaches to safeguarding the global ocean environment.  ♦ The event provided a platform to share best practices in Maritime Safety, Marine Environment Protection, emergency response to pollution incidents, natural disasters, marine accidents, and Maritime Security.  ♦ First convened in 2017 by the Japan Coast Guard and the Nippon Foundation, the CGGS has evolved into a vital mechanism for dialogue and confidence-building. ♦ For the 4th edition, Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, and the Prime Minister of Japan, Shigeru Ishiba (virtually), highlighted the importance of Coast Guard collaboration in Marine Pollution Response, Maritime Search and Rescue, and Maritime Law Enforcement.

Androth

♦ The Indian Navy has received an indigenously-built anti-submarine warfare ship 'Androth' on 13 September 2025. ♦ This is expected to boost its maritime prowess against the backdrop of China's growing forays into the Indian Ocean.  ♦ ‘Androth’ is the second of the eight anti-submarine warfare-shallow watercraft (ASW-SWC), has been built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata. ♦ The ASW-SWC ships are being inducted into the Navy to strengthen its anti-submarine and coastal surveillance capabilities. ♦ The name ‘Androth’ holds strategic and symbolic significance as it is derived from the Androth Island in the Lakshadweep archipelago, underscoring India’s commitment to safeguarding its vast maritime territories. ♦ These ships at approximately 77-metre length are the largest Indian Naval warships propelled by a diesel engine-waterjet combination and are equipped with state-of-the-art lightweight torpedoes and indigenous anti-submarine warfare rockets.
