National Energy Conservation Day

♦ National Energy Conservation Day is celebrated every year on December 14 to raise awareness about why saving energy is important and to appreciate our country's successes in energy conservation. Energy conservation means using less energy by adopting better practices and technologies.  ♦ This day started in 1991 when the Indian government saw the need to save and manage energy better. The Ministry of Power launched this idea to encourage people and businesses to use energy-saving methods. The first National Energy Conservation Day was on December 14, 1991. Since then, December 14 has been a day to raise awareness about saving energy, this day is supported by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power, showing the country's commitment to using energy wisely.

The Department of Posts (DoP)

♦ The Department of Posts (DoP), Ministry of Communications, Government of India, and BSE, Asia’s oldest stock exchange, signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi. This strategic partnership enables India Post to act as a distributor of mutual fund products through its vast postal network, significantly benefiting citizens in rural, semi-urban, and underserved regions. ♦ The initiative is in line with the Budget 2025–26 announcement, which emphasized leveraging India Post’s vast postal network as a catalyst for economic activity in rural and semi-urban regions.  ♦ The MoU was formally signed by Ms. Manisha Bansal Badal, General Manager (CCS & RB), Department of Posts, and Shri Sundararaman Ramamurthy, MD & CEO, BSE, in the presence of senior officials from both organisations. ♦ Under the agreement, selected postal employees will be trained and certified as mutual fund distributors, enabling them to provide investor services and facilitate mutual fund transactions through the BSE StAR MF platform. The MoU will remain valid for three years from 12.12.2025 to 11.12.2028, with provisions for renewal.

Global AI Vibrancy Tool

♦ India was ranked third in ‘Global AI Vibrancy Tool’ index in a study conducted by Stanford University. The 2025 version of Stanford’s ‘Global AI Vibrancy Tool’ works with data coverage through 2024 across a set of parameters, which measure the preparedness of countries when it comes to AI. ♦ With a score of 21.59, India now trails only the United States (78.6) and China (36.95), highlighting its rapid emergence as a major global player in AI innovation, talent, and policy. ♦ The Stanford Global AI Vibrancy Tool is an online dashboard that ranks countries on the activity and competitiveness of their AI ecosystems. It assesses them across seven pillars: research, talent, economy, policy, infrastructure, responsible AI, and public opinion. ♦ On India, the Stanford report says that the country has received a score of 21.59 in the 2024 Global Vibrancy Index, and is ahead of South Korea (17.24) and the UK (16.64). * India’s climb from its seventh-place ranking the previous year, placing it ahead of nations like South Korea and the United Kingdom, is a significant achievement.

Squash World Cup

♦ Joshna Chinappa, Abhay Singh, and Anahat Singh led India to a historic win in the final of the Squash World Cup against Hong Kong on 14 December 2025 in Chennai. India won their first-ever squash World Cup title with a 3-0 triumph.  ♦ With their title run, India surpassed their previous best performance when they won a bronze medal in 2023. Hong Kong also registered its best-ever finish in the tournament's history, bettering its bronze-medal finish two years back. ♦ Joshna Chinappa gave India a winning start after she defeated world-ranked 37 Lee Ka Yi 3-1, while India’s top-ranked men’s squash player at world No. 29, Abhay Singh, thrashed Alex Lau 3-nil. The Seventeen-year-old Anahat Singh went on to wrap up the game in India’s favour, defeating Tomato Ho 3-nil.

National Energy Conservation Awards 2025

♦ President Droupadi Murmu presented the National Energy Conservation Awards 2025 and prizes of the National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation in New Delhi on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day on 14 December 2025.  ♦ For the Best Performing state award in energy efficiency, Karnataka was awarded the first prize in Group 1. Andhra Pradesh bagged the first prize in group 2, whereas Kerala was chosen the winner in group 3. For group 4, Assam secured the first position, and Chandigarh won the first position in group 5. ♦ In the National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation 2025, Anuj Prince from Ambala bagged the first prize in the Group A category, while Soumya Jeet Malik from Odisha emerged as the winner in the Group B category. ♦ The President said that avoiding unnecessary use of electrical appliances, adopting energy-efficient devices, using natural light and ventilation, and embracing solar and other renewable energy sources help reduce carbon emissions while contributing to clean air, safe water and a balanced ecosystem.  ♦ Emphasising the role of youth, President Murmu said that awareness and active participation of children and young people are essential to achieving energy conservation goals and ensuring sustainable development of the country. ♦ Referring to India’s progress, she said that energy efficiency efforts in 2023–24 resulted in savings of 53.60 million tonnes of oil equivalent, leading to significant economic benefits and substantial reductions in carbon dioxide emissions.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)

♦ All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, conducted India’s first clinical trial of a new and advanced stroke treatment device named the Supernova Stent. AIIMS informed that Supernova is designed for the country’s diverse patient population, where strokes often strike patients younger than in the West.  ♦ AIIMS also underlined that this is the nation’s first stroke device cleared based on a domestic clinical trial. It added that the device has already treated more than 3 hundred patients in Southeast Asia.  ♦ The Medical Institute further said that the Supernova Stent will now be manufactured in the country, offering hope to over 17 lakhs citizens who suffer strokes each year.

Sai Jadhav

♦ The Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun has reached a remarkable milestone, as Sai Jadhav has become the first woman officer cadet to successfully complete training at the esteemed institution and join the Indian Army. Hailing from Kolhapur in Maharashtra, Jadhav was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Territorial Army (TA) after finishing an intense six-month special training course at IMA. ♦ Among her peers, she stood out not just for her accomplishments but also because she was the sole female officer cadet among a group of 16 TA officer cadets. While she did not take part in the main Passing Out Parade alongside regular Army cadets, her completion of the same rigorous training standards established for the Territorial Army’s special course is commendable.
