World Pulses Day

♦ World Pulses Day is observed annually on February 10 around the globe to raise awareness about the importance of pulses as a crop. It also emphasises the nutritional value, food security and environmental advantages of pulses.   ♦ In 2013, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/RES/68/231), recognising 2016 as the International Year of Pulses. Led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Later in 2019, the UN General Assembly declared February 10 to be observed as World Pulses Day.

Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2025

♦ India climbed five places to the 91st position out of 182 countries and territories on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2025 released on 10 February 2026. India's score has gone up by one point since the previous year, while its rank has improved from 96th position, according to the latest CPI from the global NGO Transparency International. ♦ The CPI ranks 182 countries and territories worldwide by their perceived levels of public sector corruption. The results are given on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). ♦ Denmark retained its position at the top of the index, scoring 89 points, ahead of Finland and Singapore. At the other end of the scale were South Sudan and Somalia, both registering nine points, followed by Venezuela. The leading three nations saw no change, while South Sudan's one-point gain brought it level with Somalia. ♦ While the US has been ranked at the 29th spot, the UK bagged the 20th spot.

India and the United Kingdom

♦ India and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland signed an agreement on social security relating to Social Security Contributions in New Delhi on 10 February 2026. The agreement seeks to avoid double social security contributions for employees of both countries on temporary assignments in each other’s territories for periods of up to 36 months. ♦ The Agreement was signed by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri for the Indian side and by the British High Commissioner to India, Lindy Cameron for the UK side. ♦ According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India has been entering into bilateral Social Security Agreements (SSAs) with other countries in order to protect the interests of Indian professionals/skilled workers working abroad for short durations and enhance the competitiveness of Indian companies. ♦ It may be recalled that at the time of signing of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between India and the United Kingdom in July 2025, both governments had committed to concluding an agreement on social security.

NITI Aayog

♦ NITI Aayog released the first set of study reports outlining India’s development pathways towards achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047 while progressing towards Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2070. The reports form part of India’s first government-led, multi-sectoral and integrated assessment of long-term development and climate transition scenarios. ♦ The think tank is releasing a total of eleven reports on February 9 and 10, 2026. According to the findings, India can achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 under all assessed scenarios while remaining aligned with its Net Zero commitment. The reports note that India’s coal consumption will go up till 2047 even as energy intensity decreases and efficiency goes up, while meeting Net Zero goals, underscoring the need for a calibrated and just transition. ♦ One of the key reports released, Scenarios towards Viksit Bharat and Net Zero: Financing Needs, estimates that India will require an unprecedented investment of about $22.7 trillion by 2070 to achieve Net Zero, with a financing gap of approximately $6.5 trillion that will need to be bridged through external sources and stronger global capital integration.
