World Braille Day

♦ World Braille Day is celebrated every year on January 4, highlights the vital role of Braille as a means of communication and empowerment for the visually impaired. The day commemorates the birth anniversary of Louis Braille, the inventor of the tactile writing system that has transformed lives worldwide. ♦ The United Nations established World Braille Day to raise awareness about the significance of Braille in ensuring the human rights and inclusion of blind and visually impaired individuals.  The United Nations recognised the day for the first time in 2019.

India's traditional medicine system - AYUSH

♦ The commerce ministry said India's traditional medicine system - AYUSH - has received formal recognition in bilateral trade agreements with Oman and New Zealand. Both the agreements, which were finalised in 2025 December, have dedicated annexures on health-related services and traditional medicine. ♦ Exports of AYUSH and herbal products have registered a growth of 6.11 per cent, increasing from USD 649.2 million in 2023-24 to USD 688.89 million in 2024-25.

India has become the world’s largest producer of rice

♦ India has become the world’s largest producer of rice, surpassing China. This was stated by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in New Delhi. He said India’s rice production has reached 150.18 million tonnes, compared to China’s 145.28 million tonnes.  ♦ The minister unveiled 184 improved varieties of 25 field crops developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research at an event held in the national capital. The 184 released varieties include 122 cereals, 6 pulses, 13 oilseeds, 11 fodder crops, 6 sugarcane, 24 cotton, and one each of jute and tobacco.

Venezuela’s executive vice president Delcy Rodríguez

♦ Venezuela’s executive vice president Delcy Rodríguez has emerged as the country’s acting President after President Nicolás Maduro was captured during a US military operation.  ♦ Rodríguez is a Caracas native born on May 18, 1969. She is the daughter of Jorge Antonio Rodríguez, a left-wing guerrilla fighter who founded the revolutionary Liga Socialista party in the 1970s.  ♦ Rodríguez served as Venezuela's minister of communication and information from 2013 to 2014, before becoming foreign minister from 2014 to 2017. Maduro named Rodríguez vice president in June 2018.

Bulgaria joined the eurozone

♦ Bulgaria joined the eurozone and adopted the euro as its official currency, becoming the 21st member of the euro area. To ensure a smooth transition, the Bulgarian lev will remain in circulation alongside the euro throughout January.  ♦ From February 1, the euro will become the country’s sole legal tender. Accession to the eurozone has been a key priority for the Bulgarian government since the country joined the European Union in 2007.  ♦ The eurozone was established with the official launch of the euro on January 1, 1999, in 11 countries, including France, Germany, and Austria. Currently, six of the EU’s 27 member countries Sweden, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, and Denmark have not yet adopted the euro.

JP Nadda has inaugurated the e-Bill System

♦ Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers JP Nadda has inaugurated the e-Bill System that will enable the government to process the fertilizer subsidies amounting to approximately 2 lakh crore rupees. The Minister said this online system would play a significant role in strengthening transparent, efficient and technology-driven governance.  ♦ The integrated e-Bill system significantly enhances financial governance, with robust built-in controls that validate payments against predefined criteria, log every action for audit purposes, and reduce the risk of fraud or misuse reinforcing Government’s commitment to transparent, efficient, and technology-driven administration.  ♦ The newly launched system represents a paradigm shift from manual, paper-based processes to a fully digital, system-to-system workflow, eliminating the need for any physical movement of bills.
