The Indira Gandhi Prize

♦ The Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament, and Development for 2023 was presented to Daniel Barenboim and Ali Abu Awwad on 19 November 2024. ♦ The award was presented virtually on Indira Gandhi's birth anniversary. ♦ The prize was given to Barenboim for his contribution to foster peace through musical and cultural dialogue initiatives and to Awwad for his advocacy for dialogue through his organisation Roots, an outfit that he started after spending time in an Israeli jail.  ♦ The selection of the awardees was made by a jury led by former Chief Justice of India T S Thakur.

Mithali Raj

♦ Former Indian women’s cricket captain, Mithali Raj was appointed as the Mentor of Women’s Cricket Operations by the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA). ♦ She has signed a three-year contract with the ACA. Her primary responsibility will be to scout and nurture young talent across the state, with a focus on developing the next generation of women cricketers. ♦ Mithali retired from international cricket in 2022.

India participated in IBTM World 2024

♦ Ministry of Tourism, Government of India participated in IBTM World 2024 at Barcelona on 19th November 2024. ♦ IBTM is one of the leading global travel exhibitions on MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions). ♦ The participation at the exhibition is aimed at promoting India as a potential destination for hosting conferences and conventions.  ♦ The theme of IBTM World 2024 is 'People, Power, Potential. Ministry of Tourism aims to showcase the MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and events) products and services of the country to  meetings and events professionals across the globe through this platform. ♦ Leading Convention centres like Hyderabad Convention Centre and Jaipur Convention Centre are participating along with the Ministry to highlight its robust infrastructure in terms of organizing events and conferences on a bigger scale.

Investment Information and Credit Rating Agency (ICRA)

♦ According to the Investment Information and Credit Rating Agency (ICRA), India's renewable energy capacity is projected to reach 250 GW by March 2026. ♦ This growth will be supported by a robust project pipeline of over 80 GW, following a significant increase in tendering activity during FY24. ♦ ICRA forecasts the installed renewable energy capacity, including large hydroelectric projects, to rise from 201 GW in September 2024 to 250 GW by March 2026.  ♦ ICRA also anticipates that India will require 50 GW of energy storage capacity by 2030, which will be met through a combination of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and pumped storage hydro projects (PSP). ♦ This aligns with India's ambitious target of achieving 500 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030.

GSAT-N2

♦ India’s GSAT-N2 communication satellite was successfully deployed into orbit by SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket on 19 November 2024. ♦ The satellite launched from Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. GSAT-N2 was developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and its commercial arm, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), is a Ka-band high-throughput communication satellite designed to address India’s expanding broadband and in-flight connectivity needs. ♦ The satellite, weighing 4,700 kg, will provide high-throughput communication services with a throughput capacity of 48 Gbps, covering all of India, including remote areas like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.  ♦ GSAT-N2 is equipped with 32 user beams, including narrow spot beams for the Northeast region and wide spot beams for the rest of India, ensuring robust coverage even in the most remote areas. ♦ This launch is part of the Indian government’s 2020 space sector reforms, which mandate NSIL to develop satellites based on service demand. With a mission life of 14 years, GSAT-N2 is poised to significantly enhance the country’s digital infrastructure and connectivity.

జీ20 సదస్సు

బ్రెజిల్‌లోని రియో డి జనీరోలో 2024, నవంబరు 19న జరిగిన జీ20 సదస్సులో కొన్ని తీర్మానాలను సభ్యదేశాలు ఆమోదించాయి. ఆకలిని జయించడానికి అంతర్జాతీయ కూటమి ఏర్పాటుతోపాటు గాజాకు మరింత సాయం అందించాలని, ఉక్రెయిన్‌ యుద్ధానికి ముగింపు పలకాలని జీ20 సదస్సు తీర్మానించింది. వాటితోపాటు సంపన్నులపై అంతర్జాతీయ పన్ను విధించాలని, ఐక్యరాజ్య సమితి భద్రతా మండలిలో సంస్కరణలను చేపట్టాలని సూచించింది.  అయితే ఈ ఉమ్మడి తీర్మానంపై పూర్తిగా ఏకాభిప్రాయం రాలేదు.   20 అతి పెద్ద ఆర్థిక వ్యవస్థలకు సంబంధించిన దేశాధినేతలు ఈ సదస్సులో పాల్గొన్నారు. వారిలో అమెరికా అధ్యక్షుడు జో బైడెన్, చైనా అధ్యక్షుడు షీ జిన్‌పింగ్, భారత ప్రధాని నరేంద్ర మోదీ తదితరులున్నారు.

ఇందిరాగాంధీ శాంతి పురస్కారం

ఇజ్రాయెల్‌-పాలస్తీనా ప్రజల మధ్య స్నేహాన్ని పెంపొందించడానికి జీవితాలను అంకితం చేసిన డానియెల్‌ బారెన్‌బొయిమ్, అలీ అబు అవ్వాద్‌లకు 2023 ఏడాది ఇందిరాగాంధీ శాంతి పురస్కారాన్ని ప్రదానం చేశారు. సుప్రీంకోర్టు మాజీ ప్రధాన న్యాయమూర్తి జస్టిస్‌ టి.ఎస్‌.ఠాకుర్‌ నేతృత్వంలోని కమిటీ అవార్డు గ్రహీతలను ఎంపిక చేసింది. ఇందిరాగాంధీ జయంతి నేపథ్యంలో 2024, నవంబరు 19న ఈ పురస్కారాన్ని వర్చువల్‌ విధానంలో బారెన్‌బొయిమ్, అవ్వాద్‌లకు అందచేశారు.

కక్ష్యలోకి జీశాట్‌-ఎన్‌2 ఉపగ్రహం

భారత అధునాతన సమాచార ఉపగ్రహం జీశాట్‌-ఎన్‌2 2024, నవంబరు 19న విజయవంతంగా భూ కక్ష్యలోకి చేరింది. స్పేస్‌ఎక్స్‌ సంస్థకు చెందిన ఫాల్కన్‌-9 రాకెట్‌ ద్వారా అమెరికాలోని కేప్‌ కెనావెరాల్‌ నుంచి ఈ ప్రయోగం జరిగింది. 4,700 కిలోల బరువున్న ఈ ఉపగ్రహాన్ని మోసుకెళ్లగల రాకెట్‌ భారత్‌ వద్ద లేకపోవడంతో విదేశీ సంస్థపై ఆధారపడాల్సి వచ్చింది. భారత అంతరిక్ష పరిశోధన సంస్థ (ఇస్రో) వద్ద ఉన్న శక్తిమంతమైన రాకెట్‌ ఎల్‌వీఎం-3కి 4వేల కిలోల బరువైన ఉపగ్రహాన్ని మోసుకెళ్లే సామర్థ్యం మాత్రమే ఉంది. ఇస్రోకు, ఎలాన్‌ మస్క్‌కు చెందిన స్పేస్‌ఎక్స్‌కు మధ్య ఇదే తొలి వాణిజ్య భాగస్వామ్యం.

సీసీడీసీ నివేదిక

అల్ప, మధ్యాదాయ దేశాల్లో మూడు లేదా నాలుగేళ్ల వయసున్న సుమారు 18 కోట్ల మంది చిన్నారులకు సరైన పెంపకం లభించడం లేదని ఒక నివేదిక వెల్లడించింది. దిల్లీలోని సెంటర్‌ ఫర్‌ క్రానిక్‌ డిసీజ్‌ కంట్రోల్‌ (సీసీడీసీ)కు చెందిన పరిశోధకులతో పాటు అంతర్జాతీయ శాస్త్రవేత్తలతో కూడిన బృందం ఈ అధ్యయనం చేసింది.  అల్ప, మధ్యాదాయ దేశాల్లో ప్రతి చిన్నారినీ ఒక ఏడాది ముందుగా పాఠశాలలో చేర్పించడానికి ఆయా దేశాల జీడీపీలో 0.15 శాతం ఖర్చవుతుంది. ఈ విధానం ద్వారా వచ్చే లాభాలు ప్రభుత్వాలు వ్యయం చేసే ఖర్చుకన్నా 8 నుంచి 19 శాతం అధికంగా ఉంటాయి.  భారత్‌లో పరిస్థితిని గమనిస్తే 2022లో 3 నుంచి 6 ఏళ్ల వయసున్న సుమారు దాదాపు 3 కోట్ల మంది చిన్నారులు ప్రీస్కూల్‌కు వెళ్లినట్లు ప్రభుత్వ నివేదికలు చెబుతున్నాయి.
