International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

♦ The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is observed every year on 25 November to create awareness about the violence against women and girls. ♦ This date was selected to honour the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960 by order of the country’s ruler, Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961). On 20 December 1993, the General Assembly adopts the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women paving the path towards eradicating violence against women and girls worldwide. ♦ Finally, on 7 February 2000, the General Assembly officially designating 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. 

Yamandu Orsi

♦ Center-left opposition candidate Yamandu Orsi secured victory in Uruguay's presidential election. ♦ His election marks a shift away from five years of conservative governance. Orsi got 49.81 percentage of the vote to conservative Alvaro Delgado's 45.90 percent.  ♦ According to the Electoral Court of the country, out of the 94.4 percent of ballots counted, Orsi secured 1,123,420 votes, narrowly defeating Delgado, who garnered 1,042,001 votes.

Indian Foreign Service (IFS)

♦ Dinesh Bhatia was named as India’s next Ambassador to Brazil, the Ministry of External Affairs said on 25 November 2024. He is an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 1992 batch.  ♦ Dinesh is currently serving as the ambassador of India to Argentina, having assumed this role on August 21, 2019, and his accreditation also extended to Uruguay and Paraguay until February 2022. ♦ Before this, he served as the Consul General of India in Toronto and Ambassador to Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, and Liberia. 

ICA Global Cooperative Conference 2024

♦ Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ICA Global Cooperative Conference 2024 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on 25 November 2024. For the first time in its 130-year history, the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) is hosting its Global Cooperative Conference and General Assembly in India.  ♦ It was organized by the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) in partnership with ICA, the Government of India, and Indian cooperatives such as AMUL and KRIBHCO, the event will run from November 25 to 30.   ♦ The theme of this conference is “Cooperatives Build Prosperity for All,” it resonates with the Indian Government’s vision of “Sahkar Se Samriddhi” (Prosperity through Cooperation).  ♦ Modi also launched the UN International Year of Cooperatives 2025, centered around the theme, “Cooperatives Build a Better World. This initiative highlights the pivotal role of cooperatives in fostering social inclusion, economic empowerment, and sustainable development. 

Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA)

♦ The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the Income Tax Department’s PAN 2.0 project with an allocation of Rs.1,435 crore  on 25 November 2024.  ♦ The PAN 2.0 project aims to introduce a technology-driven overhaul of taxpayer registration services, offering several key benefits, including improved accessibility, faster service delivery, enhanced data accuracy, eco-friendly processes, cost efficiency, and upgraded infrastructure security for greater agility. ♦ The project will consolidate core and non-core PAN/TAN activities and upgrade the PAN validation service, thereby replacing the existing PAN/TAN 1.0 system. ♦ The CCEA noted that the PAN 2.0 project aligns with the government’s Digital India vision by establishing PAN as a universal identifier across digital systems for specified government agencies.
