♦ India’s Nishad Kumar won a silver medal in the men’s high jump T47 class at the Paris 2024 Paralympics on 1 September 2024. He soared to a height of 2.04m in the final. USA’s Roderick Townsend won the gold medal with a score of 2.12m and Georgii Margiev settled for bronze with a jump of 2.00m. ♦ This was Nishad Kumar’s second Paralympic medal. He won the silver medal at Tokyo 2020 with a clearance of 2.06m behind Townsend back then as well.
♦ Air Marshal Tejinder Singh took over as Deputy Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force in New Delhi on 1 September 2024. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and was commissioned in the fighter stream of the IAF on 13 June 1987. He is a Category 'A' Qualified Flying Instructor with over 4500 hours of flying, an alumnus of Defence Service Staff College and National Defence College. ♦ He was also awarded the Vayu Sena Medal in 2007 and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2022.
♦ India, Maldives, Mauritius and Sri Lanka have signed the Charter and an MoU for the establishment of the Colombo Security Conclave (CSC) Secretariat in Colombo to address security and stability challenges in the Indian Ocean Region. The signing ceremony was hosted in Colombo by the Government of Sri Lanka. ♦ The CSC’s core objective is to promote regional security by addressing transnational threats and challenges of common concern to the Member States. There are five pillars of cooperation under the CSC namely Maritime Safety and Security; Countering Terrorism and Radicalisation; Combating Trafficking and Transnational Organised Crime; Cyber Security and Protection of Critical Infrastructure and Technology; and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief.
♦ According to the Paysecure report, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) processed nearly Rs.81 lakh crore transactions in the 2024 April-July period. This transaction number converts to a 37% increase on a year-over-year (YoY) basis. ♦ With 117.6 billion transactions in 2023, India leads in digital transactions. ♦ UPI processed 3,729.1 transactions per second, which is a 58% surge over the 2,348 transactions every second registered in 2022. ♦ With this data, UPI surpassed China’s Alipay, Paypal and Brazil’s PIX in the number of transactions processed. ♦ UPI processed 117.6 billion transactions in 2023 – the highest in the world. In July, UPI processed Rs 20.6 lakh crore worth of transactions – marking the highest-ever monthly transaction value for UPI, surpassing the Rs 20 lakh crore mark for the third consecutive month.
♦ D.K. Sunil was appointed the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on 31August 2024. HAL is a Navaratna status public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence. ♦ Sunil replaced CB Ananthakrishnan. ♦ Sunil joined HAL as a management trainee, has been with the firm for 37 years and contributed significantly to design, production, quality enhancement and customer support ♦ Sunil was a research scholar in the Centre for Advanced Studies in Electronics Science and Technology of the School of Physics. He received his Ph. D degree in 2019.
♦ India's Rubina Francis won a bronze medal in the women's air pistol SH1 event final in the Paris Paralympics on 31 August 2024. She scored a total of 211.1 to finish third in the eight-woman final. ♦ Sareh Javanmardi of the Islamic Republic of Iran won the gold medal, finishing with a tally of 236.8 while Aysel Ozgan of Turkiye finished second with a score of 231.1 to take the silver. ♦ Rubina won a silver medal at the Para World Championships 2023 in Lima, Peru and followed it up with a bronze medal at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China.
