♦ Parliament has passed the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025 with the Rajya Sabha approving it on 20 August 2025. ♦ Moving the Bill, Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the Bill will further amend the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017. ♦ He said the bill seeks to establish the Indian Institute of Management at Guwahati in Assam which is an important centre of the North-Eastern region of the country.
♦ The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) collaborated with a private satellite based internet service provider Starlink for seamless Aadhaar based customer verification on 20 August 2025. ♦ In a statement, the Ministry of Electronics and IT said that the use of Aadhaar authentication by a global satellite internet provider demonstrates the scalability and reliability of India’s digital infrastructure. ♦ It added that this collaboration emphasizes how Aadhaar can enable innovation in service delivery while ensuring transparency and accountability.
♦ Olympian Anantjeet Singh Naruka won India’s first senior gold medal at the ongoing Asian Shooting Championship 2025 as he bagged the men’s skeet crown in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, on 20 August 2025. ♦ He scored 57 off a possible 60 in a tense final to finish above Mansour Al-Rashidi of Kuwait. ♦ The bronze medal went to Qatari shooter Ali Ahmed Al-Ishaq, who shot 43. ♦ This was also Naruka’s first-ever individual gold medal at the Asian Championships. ♦ The shotgun shooter, who represented India at the Paris 2024 Olympics, was forced to settle for the silver at the last edition in Kuwait in 2024.
♦ India and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), comprising Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic and Russia, have signed the Terms of Reference (ToR) to launch negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). ♦ The ToR was signed by Additional Secretary of the Department of Commerce Ajay Bhadoo and Eurasian Economic Commission’s Deputy Director of Trade Policy Department Mikhail Cherekaev in Moscow. ♦ The proposed FTA will boost exports, support Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and diversify market access. ♦ During the signing ceremony, both sides noted that trade turnover between India-EAEU reached 69 billion dollars in 2024, registering a 7 percent increase over 2023. ♦ The two sides also reaffirmed their commitment to the early conclusion of the agreement and to building a long-term institutional framework for trade cooperation.
♦ The Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile Agni-5 was successfully test-fired from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha on 20 August 2025. ♦ The launch validated all operational and technical parameters and was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command. ♦ Developed by the defence research and development organisation (DRDO), Agni-5 is among India’s most advanced long-range missiles with a range of over 5,000 kilometres. ♦ Equipped with modern navigation, guidance, warhead and propulsion technologies, it strengthens India’s nuclear deterrence. ♦ The Agni-5 can cover almost the entire Asian continent, including northern China, as well as parts of Europe, making it a key component of India’s nuclear deterrence.
