పునరుత్పాదక శక్తి వనరుల ఆవశ్యకతను తెలియజేసే లక్ష్యంతో ఏటా ఆగస్టు 20న ‘జాతీయ పునరుత్పాదక శక్తి దినోత్సవం’గా (National Renewable Energy Day) నిర్వహిస్తారు. దీన్నే ‘అక్షయ్‌ ఉర్జా దివస్‌’ అని పిలుస్తారు. మానవ ప్రమేయం లేకుండా ప్రకృతిలో నిరంతరం లభించే శక్తిని ‘రెన్యువబుల్‌ ఎనర్జీ’ అంటారు. దీన్నే తరిగిపోని శక్తిగా పేర్కొంటారు. సౌరశక్తి, పవనశక్తి, నీటిశక్తి, తరంగ శక్తి, టైడల్‌ శక్తి, భూతాప శక్తి, జీవ ఇంధనం, బయోగ్యాస్‌ శక్తి మొదలైనవి దీనికి ఉదాహరణలు. ఇవి తక్కువ ఖర్చుతో కూడుకున్నవి, కాలుష్యరహితాలు. ప్రకృతిలో పరిమితంగా లభించే వనరుల వినియోగాన్ని తగ్గించి, పునరుత్పాదక వనరులు వాడేలా ప్రోత్సహించడం ఈ రోజు ముఖ్య ఉద్దేశం. చారిత్రక నేపథ్యం: శిలాజ ఇంధనాలైన బొగ్గు, పెట్రోలియం, సహజవాయువులను అధికంగా వినియోగించడం వల్ల వాతావరణ కాలుష్యం పెరిగి, పర్యావరణ సమతౌల్యం దెబ్బతింటోంది. అంతేకాక అవన్నీ పరిమితంగానే లభ్యమవుతాయి. వాటి వినియోగాన్ని తగ్గించి, ప్రత్యామ్నాయాలైన పునరుత్పాదక సహజవనరుల వాడకంవైపు ప్రజలను మళ్లించాలని నాటి మన్మోహన్‌ సింగ్‌ ప్రభుత్వం భావించింది. దీనికి అనుగుణంగా మినిస్ట్రీ ఆఫ్‌ న్యూ అండ్‌ రెన్యువబుల్‌ ఎనర్జీ (ఎంఎన్‌ఆర్‌ఈ) ఏటా ఆగస్టు 20న ‘జాతీయ పునరుత్పాదక శక్తి దినోత్సవం’గా జరుపుకోవాలని 2004లో తీర్మానించింది.
