ప్రపంచ ఎడారీకరణ - కరవు కట్టడి దినోత్సవం

ఎడారీకరణ, భూ క్షీణత, కరవు పరిస్థితుల వల్ల కలిగే నష్టాల గురించి ప్రజల్లో అవగాహన కల్పించే లక్ష్యంతో ఏటా జూన్‌ 17న ‘ప్రపంచ ఎడారీకరణ - కరవు కట్టడి దినోత్సవం’గా (World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought) నిర్వహిస్తారు. పెరుగుతున్న జనాభాకు తగ్గట్టు మానవులు తమ కార్యకలాపాలను విస్తరిస్తున్న ఫలితంగా భూమి, నీరు, గాలి కాలుష్యం బారిన పడుతున్నాయి. అడవుల నరికివేత కారణంగా జీవవైవిధ్యం సన్నగిల్లుతోంది. దీంతో భూమి సహజ స్వభావానికి తీవ్ర ముప్పు వాటిల్లుతోంది. వాతావరణ మార్పుల దుష్ప్రభావాలు హెచ్చరిల్లుతున్నాయి. ఎడారీకరణను ఎదుర్కోవడానికి చేపట్టాల్సిన చర్యలు, నేల సారాన్ని పెంచే ప్రయత్నాల గురించి ప్రజలను చైతన్యపరచడం ఈ రోజు ముఖ్య ఉద్దేశం. చారిత్రక నేపథ్యం: 1992లో బ్రెజిల్‌లోని రియో డి జెనిరోలో జరిగిన ఎర్త్‌ సమ్మిట్‌లో స్థిర అభివృద్ధికి ఎడారీకరణ, కరవు ప్రధాన అవరోధాలుగా గుర్తించారు. దీనికి అనుగుణంగా ఐక్యరాజ్య సమితి (ఐరాస) 1994, జూన్‌ 17న యునైటెడ్‌ నేషన్స్‌ కన్వెన్షన్‌ టు కంబాట్‌ డిసర్టిఫికేషన్‌ (యూఎన్‌సీసీడీ)ని నెలకొల్పింది. పర్యావరణ సమతౌల్యం, సుస్థిర అభివృద్ధితో కూడిన భూనిర్వహణపై ఇది ప్రధానంగా దృష్టి సారిస్తుంది. ఐరాస ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా ఏటా అదే తేదీన ‘ప్రపంచ ఎడారీకరణ - కరవు కట్టడి దినోత్సవం’గా జరుపుకోవాలని అన్ని దేశాలకు పిలుపునిచ్చింది. అప్పటి నుంచి ఏటా దీన్ని నిర్వహిస్తున్నారు. 2025 నినాదం: Restore the land. ఎంఐటీ అధిపతిగా చంద్రకాశన్‌

ప్రపంచ ప్రఖ్యాత విద్యా సంస్థ మసాచుసెట్స్‌ ఇన్‌స్టిట్యూట్‌ ఆఫ్‌ టెక్నాలజీ (ఎంఐటీ) అధిపతి (ప్రొవోస్ట్‌)గా భారత సంతతికి చెందిన ప్రొఫెసర్‌ అనంత చంద్రకాశన్‌ నియమితులయ్యారు. ప్రతిష్ఠాత్మకమైన ఈ విద్యాలయ నేతృత్వ స్థానానికి ఎదిగిన తొలి భారతీయ అమెరికన్‌ ఆయనే. 2025, జులై 1న ఆయన నూతన పదవీ బాధ్యతలు చేపడతారు.  ఎంఐటీకి ప్రొవోస్ట్‌గా ఎన్నికైన వ్యక్తి సంస్థ విద్యావిషయాలకు బాధ్యునిగా ఉండటంతోపాటు ఆర్థికాంశాలనూ పర్యవేక్షిస్తారు.

ప్రపంచ వన్డే ర్యాంకింగ్స్‌

భారత మహిళల జట్టు వైస్‌ కెప్టెన్‌ స్మృతి మంధాన ప్రపంచ వన్డే ర్యాంకింగ్స్‌లో నంబర్‌వన్‌గా నిలిచింది. 2025, జూన్‌ 17న ఐసీసీ ప్రకటించిన బ్యాటింగ్‌ జాబితాలో స్మృతి 727 పాయింట్లతో అగ్రస్థానం కైవసం చేసుకుంది. 2019 తర్వాత స్మృతి మళ్లీ నంబర్‌వన్‌ ర్యాంకు సాధించడం ఇదే ప్రథమం.  నటాలీ సీవర్‌ బ్రంట్‌ (719- ఇంగ్లాండ్‌) 2, లారా వోల్వార్ట్‌ (719- దక్షిణాఫ్రికా) 3 స్థానాల్లో నిలిచారు. జెమీమా రోడ్రిగ్స్‌ 15, కెప్టెన్‌ హర్మన్‌ప్రీత్‌ కౌర్‌ 16వ ర్యాంకులు సాధించారు.

బిల్లీ జీన్‌ కింగ్‌ అవార్డు

భారత టెన్నిస్‌ క్రీడాకారిణి భమిడిపాటి శ్రీవల్లి రష్మిక (తెలంగాణ)కు ప్రతిష్ఠాత్మక బిల్లీ జీన్‌ కింగ్‌ కప్‌ హార్ట్‌ పురస్కారం దక్కింది. 2025లో బిల్లీ జీన్‌ కింగ్‌ కప్‌ ఆసియా- ఓసియానియా గ్రూపు-1 టోర్నీలో ప్రదర్శనకు శ్రీవల్లికి ఈ అవార్డు లభించింది. ఈ విషయాన్ని అఖిల భారత టెన్నిస్‌ సంఘం (ఐటా) 2025, జూన్‌ 17న ప్రకటించింది.

Shrivalli Bhamidipaty

♦ India’s Tennis player Shrivalli Bhamidipaty was awarded the prestigious Billie Jean King Cup Heart Award for the Asia/Oceania Group I zone. ♦ The award, given by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), recognises players who demonstrate exceptional courage, commitment, and team spirit while representing their nations in the Billie Jean King Cup, the world’s premier international women’s team tennis competition.  ♦ With this honour, Shrivalli becomes only the third Indian woman to receive this award, joining the ranks of tennis legends Sania Mirza (2020) and Ankita Raina (2022).

shedding new light on South Asia’s ancient biodiversity

♦ Scientists have uncovered a remarkable 24-million-year-old secret hidden in the coal beds of Assam’s Makum Coalfield, shedding new light on South Asia’s ancient biodiversity. ♦ Fossilized leaves, identified as the world’s oldest known record of the Nothopegia plant genus, were discovered by researchers from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP) in Lucknow, an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology. ♦ The fossil leaves, dating back to the late Oligocene epoch (24–23 million years ago), bear a striking resemblance to the modern Nothopegia species found today in the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s key biodiversity hotspots, located thousands of kilometers away from Assam. ♦ Notably, the Nothopegia genus no longer grows in Northeast India, making this discovery a significant clue to the region’s ecological past. ♦ Using advanced techniques such as herbarium comparison, cluster analysis, and the Climate Leaf Analysis Multivariate Program (CLAMP), the research team reconstructed the ancient environment of North-East India.

International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA)

♦ The first Assembly of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) was held in New Delhi. ♦ The meeting was chaired by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and attended by ministerial delegations from nine countries, including Bhutan, Cambodia, Eswatini, Guinea, India, Liberia, Suriname, Somalia, and Kazakhstan. ♦ IBCA is a global initiative envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the conservation of big cats.  ♦ The Assembly unanimously endorsed Bhupender Yadav as the President and S.P. Yadav as the Director General of IBCA.  ♦ The IBCA, established by the Government of India through the National Tiger Conservation Authority in March 2024, comprises 95 range countries. ♦ It aims to create a global platform for conservation cooperation, knowledge sharing, and technical and financial support to halt the decline of big cat populations and safeguard biodiversity.
