Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks

♦ Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Prime Minister of Lao PDR H.E. Sonexay Siphandone in Vientiane on 11 October 2024. India and Lao PDR signed six MoUs and agreements in the fields including defence cooperation, customs, audio-visual, and preservation of heritage.  India has also decided to provide one million US dollar financial assistance to a project to improve nutrition security in Laos with food fortification through the India-UN Development Partnership Fund.

♦ The India Digital Agri Conference 2024 was organized in New Delhi on 11 October 2024 to explore the transformative potential of digital agriculture. The mission aims to empower farmers with real-time information and support systems, enabling better decision-making and boosting rural livelihoods. Shri Chaturvedi emphasized that digital agriculture will play a pivotal role in transforming the agricultural landscape of India.

Noel Naval Tata (67)

♦ Noel Naval Tata (67) was appointed as Chairman of the Tata Trusts on 11 October 2024. He succeeded Ratan Tata. Noel is the 11th chairman of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the sixth at Sir Ratan Tata Trust, the primary entities within Tata Trusts which together own approximately 52% of Tata Sons, the holding company of the group. ♦ Noel is the Chairman of Tata International Limited, Voltas and Tata Investment Corporation and the Vice-Chairman at Tata Steel and Titan Company Limited. He also heads Tata’s massive apparel retail company, Trent Limited, which has seen tremendous growth since he took its leadership in 2014.

19th East Asia Summit (EAS)

♦ Prime Minister Marendra Modi  attended the 19th East Asia Summit (EAS) on 11 October 2024 in Vientiane, Laos. Modi has stressed that a free, open, inclusive, prosperous and rules-based Indo-Pacific is vital for the peace and progress of the entire region. He said peace, security and stability of the South China Sea is in the interest of the entire Indo-Pacific region. ♦ The Prime Minister emphasized that it is necessary to respect sovereignty, territorial integrity and international laws. He said emphasis must be laid on humanitarian approach, dialogue and diplomacy. He said India will continue to make every possible contribution in this direction. ♦ Modi also met his Thailand counterpart Paetongtarn Shinawatra on the sidelines of East Asia Summit in Vientiane. The leaders exchanged views on areas of India-Thailand bilateral relations and ways to forge closer regional cooperation through BIMSTEC.

2024 Nobel Peace Prize to Nihon Hidankyo

♦ The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to Nihon Hidankyo on 11 October 2024. It is a Japanese organisation representing survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It got this award “for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.” ♦ The Nobel Peace Prize 2023 was awarded to Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi.
