Submarine Day

♦ The Indian Navy celebrates Submarine Day every year on December 8. On this day in 1967, the first submarine INS Kalvari was commissioned. ♦ Kalvari is the Malayalam name for Tiger Shark, a predator in the Indian Ocean. The Kalvari was decommissioned in 1996 after 29 years of service. ♦ INS Kalavari came from Russia. It was a Foxtrot class submarine. Four Indian Navy officers from Chennai witnessed the journey of the first submarine which reached Visakhapatnam from St. Petersburg, Russia in 1967. ♦ As of April 2024, Currently, India currently operates 18 conventional submarines, including five Scorpene class (French), four HDWs (German) and seven Kilo-class (Russian).  ♦ Top 10 Countries with the Largest Military Submarine Fleets Ranking  Country   Submarines (GFP 2024) 1 Russia 65 2 United States 64 3 China  61 4 North Korea 35 5 Japan 23 6 South Korea 22 7 Iran 19 8 India 18 9 Turkey 12 10 Greece 11

Reserve Bank of India (RBI)

♦ Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced Introduction of the Secured Overnight Rupee Rate (SORR) a benchmark based on the secured money markets. ♦ The RBI had set up the Committee on the MIBOR Benchmark to review the Rupee interest rate benchmarks in the country, especially the usage of Mumbai Interbank Outright Rate (MIBOR), and to examine the need for transition to new benchmarks. ♦ The Committee recommended several important measures to further develop the interest rate derivative market and improve the credibility of interest rate benchmarks.

Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo

♦ Burkina Faso's military government has appointed Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo as Prime Minister of the country on 8 December 2024. ♦ He was communication minister and spokesman of the previous government. The junta in Burkina Faso seized power in September 2022 by ousting the military rule of Lt. Col. ♦ Paul Henri Sandaogo Damiba about eight months after it staged a coup to remove democratically elected President Roch Marc Kaboré.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)

♦ Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows into India have crossed the $1 trillion milestone (Rs.84 lakh crore) in the April 2000-September 2024 period, firmly establishing the country’s reputation as a safe and key investment destination globally. ♦ According to data from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the cumulative amount of FDI, including equity, reinvested earnings and other capital, stood at $1,033.40 billion during the said period. ♦ Approximately 25% of the FDI originated from Mauritius, followed closely by Singapore at 24%, the United States at 10%, and the Netherlands at 7%. ♦ Other notable contributors included Japan (6%), the United Kingdom (5%), the UAE (3%), with the Cayman Islands, Germany, and Cyprus each accounting for 2%.   ♦ The sectors that attracted the highest FDI inflows included services, computer software and hardware, telecommunications, trading, construction development, automobiles, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. ♦ Since 2014, India has reportedly drawn in a cumulative FDI inflow of US$ 667.4 billion, reflecting a significant increase of 119% compared to the preceding decade (2004-14).

International Civil Aviation Day

♦ International Civil Aviation Day is celebrated every year on December 7 by the United Nations to recognize the importance of aviation to the social and economic development of the world. ♦ This day was established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to highlight the contribution of sustainable development, peace and security. In 1944, delegates from 54 nations gathered in the Grand Ballroom of the Stevens Hotel in Chicago at the invitation of the United States of America. ♦ At this event, the participants concluded and signed the Convention on International Civil Aviation, also known more popularly as the ‘Chicago Convention’. ♦ International Civil Aviation Day was established in 1994 as part of ICAO's 50th anniversary activities. ♦ 2024 Theme: “Safe Skies. Sustainable Future.”

Armed Forces Flag Day

♦ Armed Forces Flag Day is observed annually on December 7 to honour the sacrifices and valour of India’s military personnel. ♦ This day was established in 1949 the Ministry of Defence to commemorate India’s armed forces. ♦ The day underscores the nation’s gratitude towards the Army, Navy, and Air Force for their dedication to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty.

Indu Chandhok

♦ Indu Chandhok passed away on 7 December 2024. He was 93. He is the founder-member of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI). ♦ Chandhok was born in Kolkata on July 22, 1931. He was one of the founder-members of the Madras Motor Sports Club in 1953 and later, the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) in 1971. ♦ He went on to become the president of the FMSCI in 1978. He was also an integral part of the Trust that purchased and developed the Madras International Circuit (erstwhile Madras Motor Race Track) at Irungattkottai.

Smallest walking robot

♦ Cornell University researchers (America) in physics and engineering have developed the tiniest walking robot ever. ♦ Designed to interact with visible light waves and move on its own, it can navigate to precise locations, like within a tissue sample. ♦ This tiny robot can then capture images and measure forces at the scale of the body's smallest structures. ♦ Cornell scientists already hold the world record for the smallest walking robot at 40-70 microns, and have now developed even tinier diffractive robots measuring just 5 to 2 microns.  ♦ The robots, controlled by magnets in a pinching motion, can move like inchworms on solid surfaces and swim through fluids. ♦ This combination of manoeuvrability, flexibility, and sub-diffractive optical technology represents a major advancement in robotics, according to the researchers.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)

♦ Roger Binny, the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Devajit Saikia as the interim Secretary of the board on 7 December 2024.  ♦ Saikia was previously managing the role of joint secretary of the board. ♦ The Secretary position remains vacant after Jay Shah has started his tenure as the International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman.

Mahatma Gandhi

♦ A bust of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled in the State Capitol building in Nebraska. ♦ This is the first time a statue of the iconic Indian leader has been installed inside any such premise in the US Pacific North-West states that come under the jurisdiction of the Indian Consulate in Seattle. ♦ Governor Jim Pillen unveiled the bust of Gandhi at his office in the iconic Nebraska State Capitol premises in Lincoln.
