Mahaparinirvan Diwas

♦ The Mahaparinirvan Diwas is observed every year on December 6 to commemorate the death anniversary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, who is known as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. ♦ He was passed away in 1956. 2024 marks the 69th death anniversary of Ambedkar.  ♦ He was born on 14 April 1891, at Mhow in Madhya Pradesh.  ♦ Ambedkar was the first law minister of independent India. He received the highest civilian honour in India, the Bharat Ratna, in 1990 posthumously.

Shammi Silva

♦ Shammi Silva assumed the Presidency of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on 6 December 2024. ♦ He is the President of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Silva replaced Jay Shah. ♦ Silva played cricket for the Colombo Cricket Club in 1983-84 and captained the side. He was a member, manager and coach of the Sri Lanka squash national team.

Diya Loka

♦ Diya Loka (17), a passionate environmentalist was honoured with The Diana Award for 2024. It recognizes young people who demonstrate exceptional social action and humanitarian work, and is named in memory of Princess Diana. ♦ Starting at the age of 14, Diya founded E-Cycl, an initiative aimed at raising awareness and collecting electronic waste, particularly in Hyderabad. ♦ She has successfully collected over 10,000 kg of e-waste, mentored over 5,000 individuals, and expanded E-Cycl into a global movement with hundreds of young changemakers involved. ♦ This award was established in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, and her belief that young people have the power to change the world for the better.

♦ Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan launched the PMeVIDYA DTH 24x7 Channel for Indian Sign Language (ISL) in New Delhi on 6 December 2024. ♦ The channel is devoted to the promotion of Indian Sign Language and has been conceptualized to promote ISL as a language and a subject.

Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND)

♦ India was chosen to Chair the 68th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND). India’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Vienna, Shambhu Kumaran officially assumed the Chairmanship of CND on 6 December 2024. ♦ The CND is the principal policy-making body of the United Nations on drug-related matters. It is mandated to monitor global drug trends, support Member States in formulating balanced policies, and oversee the implementation of the major international drug conventions.  ♦ This is the first time that India has been named to Chair this important UN body.  ♦ As Chair, India will be expected to articulate the interests of the Global South in line with its role in promoting interests and perspectives of developing nations in global discussions. ♦ India would also strive to build on the ongoing work of the CND to foster dialogue and understanding on drug policy issues.

Anna Chakra

♦ Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi launched the Public Distribution System supply chain optimization tool 'Anna Chakra' and SCAN (Subsidy Claim Application for NFSA) portal. ♦ This was developed in partnership with the World Food Programme and IIT-Delhi, the system leverages advanced algorithms to optimize foodgrain movement across the country's logistics network. ♦ The initiative covers 4.37 lakh Fair Price Shops and 6,700 warehouses, targeting the country's food security programme serving 81 crore beneficiaries.

International Social Security Association (ISSA)

♦ India was honored with the International Social Security Association (ISSA) Good Practice Award for Asia and Pacific 2024. ♦ This was presented by Mohammed Azman, President of ISSA, at the Regional Social Security Forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.  ♦ Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) received five Certificates of Merit for Communication channels, E-proceedings: A case on use of information and communication technology in justice delivery, Massive district outreach programme (Nidhi Aapke Nikat), Multilingual call centres and Prayaas initiative. ♦ The awards were received by Mr. Ashok Kumar Singh, DG, ESIC on behalf of EPFO.

జాతీయ పంచాయతీ అవార్డులు-2024

కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వం అందించే ‘జాతీయ పంచాయతీ అవార్డులు-2024’లో మహిళా మిత్ర పంచాయతీ విభాగంలో తెలంగాణకు రెండో ర్యాంకు దక్కింది. కేంద్ర పంచాయతీరాజ్‌ శాఖ 9 అంశాలను పరిగణనలోకి తీసుకుని దేశవ్యాప్తంగా 27 గ్రామపంచాయతీలకు దీన్‌దయాళ్‌ ఉపాధ్యాయ్‌ పంచాయత్‌ సతత్‌ వికాస్‌ పురస్కారాలు ప్రకటించింది. అందులో ‘ఉమెన్‌ ఫ్రెండ్లీ పంచాయతీ’ విభాగంలో పెద్దపల్లి జిల్లా మంథని మండలం చిల్లపల్లి గ్రామపంచాయతీకి రెండో ర్యాంకు లభించింది. ఈ విషయాన్ని వెల్లడిస్తూ కేంద్ర పంచాయతీరాజ్‌ శాఖ 2024, డిసెంబరు 6న ప్రకటన విడుదల చేసింది.

ఇందిరా గాంధీ శాంతి పురస్కారం

చిలీ మాజీ అధ్యక్షురాలు, మానవ హక్కుల కోసం పోరాటం చేసిన ప్రముఖురాలు మిచెల్‌ బచులెట్‌ ఈ ఏడాది (2024) ఇందిరా గాంధీ శాంతి పురస్కారానికి ఎంపికయ్యారు. ఈ మేరకు జాతీయ భద్రతా మాజీ సలహాదారు శివశంకర్‌ మీనన్‌ అధ్యక్షతన ఏర్పాటైన అంతర్జాతీయ జ్యూరీ ఎంపిక చేసినట్లు ఇందిరా గాంధీ మెమోరియల్‌ ట్రస్ట్‌ 2024, డిసెంబరు  6న తెలిపింది.  మిచెల్‌ గతంలో ఐక్యరాజ్య సమితిలో మహిళా విభాగ వ్యవస్థాపక డైరెక్టర్‌గా, మానవ హక్కుల విభాగానికి హై కమిషనర్‌గా పనిచేశారు.
