The Earth’s Rotation Day

♦ The Earth’s Rotation Day is observed every year on January 8 celebeates the anniversary of French physicist Leon Foucault’s 1851 proof that the Earth rotates on its axis. In 470 BC, the Greeks claimed that the earth rotated on its own back. In 1851, French Physicist Leon Foucault showed the world's rotation with the assistance of a pendulum. ♦ In 1851 French Physicist Leon Foucault showed the world’s rotation with the help of a pendulum. Earth's Rotation Day is celebrated to mark the experiment by Leon Foucault to demonstrate the rotation of earth, and this is given importance over other different experiments that were conducted to prove the earth's rotation around its axis.

Nitin Gadkari

♦ Road, Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that India has become the first country in the world to commercially produce bio-bitumen in road construction. Bitumen is a black, viscous mixture of hydrocarbons produced by the fractionation of crude oil, and it serves as a crucial binder in road construction.  ♦ While addressing the CSIR Technology Transfer Ceremony in New Delhi, the Minister congratulated CSIR on this historic milestone. Gadkari said that the initiative will help in reducing pollution from crop residue burning. The Minister said that bio-bitumen is a transformative step towards the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

A. K. Balasubrahmanian

♦ A. K. Balasubrahmanian has taken over charge as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). He succeeded Dr D. K. Shukla. Before joining AERB, Balasubrahmanian served as Chairman, Project Design Safety Committee for Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR)–based Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs), and as Member, Safety Review Committee for Operating Plants of AERB. ♦ A. K. Balasubrahmanian, a Distinguished Scientist, is a mechanical engineer with training in nuclear engineering and is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (FNAE).  ♦ The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board was constituted on November 15, 1983, by the President of India, exercising the powers conferred by the Atomic Energy Act, 1962, to carry out certain regulatory and safety functions under the Act. The mission of AERB is to ensure that the use of ionizing radiation and nuclear energy in India does not cause undue risk to the health of people and the environment.

Madhav Gadgil

♦ Renowned ecologist Madhav Gadgil passed away in Pune on 8 January 2026. He was 82. In 2010, the Union government appointed Gadgil as the head of the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP), later known as the Gadgil Commission. He was born in 1943 in Pune.  ♦ In 2024, the United Nations presented Gadgil with the annual Champions of the Earth award, the UN's highest environmental honour, for his seminal work on the Western Ghats, a global biodiversity hotspot. He is one of six laureates in the 2024 cohort.  ♦ One of Dr Gadgil’s most significant achievements was establishing India’s first biosphere reserve, the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in 1986.  ♦ He was also a member of the Science Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India from 1986 to 1990. Additionally, Gadgil was a member of the national advisory council from 2010 to 2012 and chairman of the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel from 2010 to 2011. Gadgil was one of the key architects of India’s Biological Diversity Act and contributed to the implementation of the Forest Rights Act. ♦ He received the Padma Bhushan in 2006.
