2014 నుంచి దశాబ్ద కాలంలో భారత అణువిద్యుత్తు సామర్థ్యం 4,780 మెగావాట్ల నుంచి 8,081 మెగావాట్లకు చేరిందని కేంద్ర శాస్త్ర సాంకేతిక, అంతరిక్ష శాఖ సహాయ మంత్రి జితేంద్రసింగ్ 2024, డిసెంబరు 11న లోక్సభలో తెలిపారు. 2031-32 నాటికల్లా దేశ అణు విద్యుత్తు సామర్థ్యం 22,480 మెగావాట్లకు చేరుతుందని ప్రభుత్వం అంచనా వేసింది.

♦ Union Labour and Employment minister Mansukh Mandaviya released ‘India Skills Report 2025’ on 10 December 2024. ♦ The report prepared by industry body Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) in collaboration with Wheebox and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). ♦ It notes that management graduates (78%) has highest global employability, followed by engineering students (71.5%), MCA students (71%) and science graduates (58%). ♦ The report said, nearly 55% of Indian graduates are projected to be globally employable by 2025, an increase from 51.2% in 2024. ♦ India’s national employability stands at 54.8% indicating a significant pool of talent scoring above 60% on the Wheebox Global Employability Test (GET) with Maharashtra leading with 84% employability followed by Delhi (78%), Karnataka (75%), Andhra Pradesh (72%), Kerala (71%) and Uttar Pradesh (70%). ♦ According to the report, male employability is slightly higher (53.47%) than female (46.53%) with Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh emerging as top states with male employable resources while Rajasthan leads in female employability followed by Gujarat and Kerala. ♦ The report said 93.22% of users expressed strong interest in internships with Tamil Nadu showing the highest preference for internships, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka.
♦ Veteran ecologist, Madhav Gadgil (82) was named ‘Champions of the Earth’ for 2024 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on 10 December 2024. This is the UN's highest environmental honour, for his seminal work in the Western Ghats, a global biodiversity hotspot. ♦ Gadgil is the only Indian on this year's (2024) award recipients list. Gadgil chaired the government-constituted Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel to study the impact of population pressure, climate change, and development activities on the ecologically fragile region in India. ♦ Since 2005, the award has recognized 122 laureates for outstanding and inspirational environmental leadership. ♦ Gadgil was honoured in the “lifetime achievement” category. ♦ The other awardees are Sonia Guajajara, Brazil’s Minister of Indigenous Peoples in the Policy Leadership category; Amy Bowers Cordalis, an indigenous people’s rights advocate from the US in the Inspiration and Action category; Gabriel Paun, a Romanian environmental defender, also in the Inspiration and Action category; Lu Qi, a Chinese scientist in the Science and Innovation category; and Sekem, a sustainable agriculture initiative in Egypyt in the Entrepreneurial Vision category.
♦ US President-elect Donald Trump announced the nomination of Indian-American lawyer Harmeet K Dhillon as Assistant Attorney General for civil rights at the department of justice. ♦ She is the fourth Indian-origin to be nominated in the Trump 2.0 cabinet after Dr Jay Bhattacharya (National Institutes of Health (NIH)), Vivek Ramaswamy (Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)) and Kashyap 'Kash' Patel (Director of FBI). ♦ Harmeet was born in Chandigarh, India in 1969, into a Punjabi Sikh family.
♦ The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2025 for sustainability has been released on 10 December 2024. According to the rankings, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has secured the top position among India varsities. ♦ It has grabbed the 171st rank globally and has secured 81.1 percentile in the Environmental Sustainability meter. ♦ The second position has been secured by IIT Kharagpur with rank 202 globally followed by IIT Bombay at third spot with rank 234. ♦ The University of Toronto (Canada) has grabbed the first spot. It has got 91 in Environmental Sustainability, 99.7 in Environmental Education, and 98.5 in Environmental Research. ♦ The second spot has been secured by ETH Zurich (Switzerland). Lund University Sweden and the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) both have secured rank three. ♦ Former Karnataka Chief Minister S.M. Krishna passed away in Bengaluru on 10 December 2024). He was 92 years old. Krishna was born on 1 May 1932 in Somanahalli, Mandya district. ♦ He held several key positions, including Speaker of the Karnataka assembly, Chief Minister of Karnataka (1999–2004), and Governor of Maharashtra (2004–2008). ♦ From 2009 to 2012, he served as India’s External Affairs Minister under the Congress-led UPA II government. ♦ In 2017, Krishna joined the BJP. ♦ Krishna was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in 2023.
జీవావరణవేత్త మాధవ్ గాడ్గిల్ (82)కు ఛాంపియన్ ఆఫ్ ఎర్త్ అవార్డును ఐక్య రాజ్య సమితి (ఐరాసా) 2024, డిసెంబరు 10న ప్రకటించింది. ఐరాసా ఏటా ప్రకటించే ఈ అవార్డు పర్యావరణ రంగంలో ఐరాస ఇచ్చే అత్యున్నత అవార్డు. పశ్చిమ కనుమల్లో జీవవైవిధ్య సంరక్షణకు గాడ్గిల్ చేసిన కృషిని గౌరవిస్తూ సమితి ఈ అవార్డునిచ్చి సత్కరిస్తోంది. ఈ ఏడాది (2024) ఛాంపియన్ ఆఫ్ అవార్డు పొందిన ఏకైక భారతీయుడు గాడ్గిలే.
అమెరికా న్యాయశాఖలో పౌర హక్కుల సహాయ అటార్నీ జనరల్గా భారతీయ అమెరికన్ హర్మీత్ థిల్లాన్ (54) నామినేట్ అయ్యారు. ఆమె నియామకాన్ని ఖరారు చేస్తూ అమెరికా అధ్యక్షుడిగా బాధ్యతలు చేపట్టనున్న ట్రంప్ ప్రకటన చేశారు. చండీగఢ్లో జన్మించిన ఆమె తన చిన్నతనంలో తల్లిదండ్రులతో కలిసి అమెరికా వెళ్లారు. 2016లో క్లీవ్లాండ్లో జరిగిన రిపబ్లికన్ పార్టీ జాతీయ సదస్సులో వేదిక ఎక్కిన తొలి భారతీయ అమెరికన్గా నిలిచారు.
గుండెకు సంక్లిష్టమైన సొంత నాడీ వ్యవస్థ ఉందని స్వీడన్లోని కరోలిన్స్కా ఇన్స్టిట్యూట్, కొలంబియా విశ్వవిద్యాలయ శాస్త్రవేత్తల ఇటీవలి పరిశోధన తేల్చింది. ఇదో మినీ మెదడులా వ్యవహరిస్తుందని వివరించింది. తలలోని మెదడు.. కదలికలు, శ్వాస లాంటి లయబద్ధ విధులను నియంత్రిస్తున్న రీతిలోనే గుండెలోని ఈ చిన్న బుర్ర కూడా హృదయ స్పందనలను నియంత్రిస్తున్నట్లు శాస్త్రవేత్తలు తెలిపారు. ఈ పరిశోధనలో గుండెలోని భిన్నరకాల నాడీ కణాలను శాస్త్రవేత్తలు గుర్తించారు. వాటికి వేర్వేరు బాధ్యతలు ఉన్నట్లు కూడా తేల్చారు. కొన్ని న్యూరాన్ల సమూహానికి.. గుండె లయను స్థిరంగా ఉంచే పేస్మేకర్ లక్షణాలూ ఉన్నట్లు గమనించారు. హృదయ స్పందన రేటు నియంత్రణపై ప్రస్తుతమున్న అభిప్రాయంతో ఈ పరిశోధన విభేదిస్తోంది.
