Pakistani satellite

♦ China successfully launched a Pakistani satellite into space from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on 17 January 2025. The satellite, named PRSC-EO1, was launched by a Long March-2D carrier rocket and entered its planned orbit successfully. ♦ The rocket also carried two other satellites - Tianlu-1 and Lantan-1. This launch marked the 556th flight mission involving the Long March carrier rocket series. ♦ In 2024, China launched a multi-mission communication satellite for Pakistan. In 2018, China sent two Pakistan satellites into orbit. The PRSS-1, Pakistan's first optical remote sensing satellite, and the PakTES-1A, a smaller observation craft.

Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (MRSAM)

♦ The Defence Ministry signed a contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited for the supply of Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (MRSAM) for the Indian Navy at a cost of Rs.2,960 crore. ♦ The MRSAM system is a standard fit, onboard multiple Indian Naval Ships and is planned to be fitted on the majority of the future platforms planned for acquisition.

President Droupadi Murmu conferred the National Sports Awards 2024 at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on 17 January 2025. World Chess Champion D. Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL)

♦ The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved an Rs.11,440 crore revival package for Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL). ♦ The infusion includes Rs.10,300 crore as equity capital into RINL and Conversion of Rs.1140 crore working capital loan as 7% Non-cumulative Preference Share Capital redeemable after 10 years to keep RINL as a going concern. ♦ RINL is a Schedule–A CPSE under the administrative control of Ministry of Steel with 100% ownership of Government of India. ♦ RINL operates the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), the only offshore steel plant under Government sector in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It has an installed capacity of 7.3 Mtpa of liquid steel. ♦ The financial condition of RINL is critical (as on 31.03.2024, the net worth of RINL was Rs.(-)4538.00 crore, current assets were Rs.7,686.24 and current liabilities were Rs.26,114.92 crores).

International Monetary Fund (IMF)

♦ The International Monetary Fund (IMF) retained India's growth forcastat 6.5 percent for for fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2027, the global economic body said in its World Economic Outlook report. ♦ It predicts that growth in the second half of FY25 will be better than the first half. ♦ On the international front, the IMF forecasted that global growth is projected at 3.3 percent in both 2025 and 2026, below the historical (2000-19) average of 3.7 percent.

Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025

♦ Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 at the Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi on January 17. It has become the second largest automotive expo in the world.  ♦ The Expo held from January 17-22 across three separate venues - Bharat Mandapam and Yashobhoomi in Delhi, and India Expo Center and Mart in Greater Noida will host over nine concurrent shows, over 20 conferences and pavilions.  ♦ The automobile sales in the country surged by a robust 11.6 percent in 2024 to scale the highest-ever mark of 2.5 crore units compared to the corresponding figure of 2.3 crore units in the previous year (2023), according to wholesale data by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). With this, India remained the world’s third-largest car market last year (2024). ♦ The growth has been primarily driven by the two-wheeler segment which grew by 14.5 percent in 2024 as compared to the previous year, posting sales of 1.95 crore units.

Punjab National Bank (PNB)

♦ The government has appointed Ashok Chandra as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Binod Kumar as the MD and CEO of Indian Bank on 16 January 2025. ♦ Prior to these appointments, Chandra was an executive director at Canara Bank, while Kumar was an executive director at PNB. ♦ Kumar has been given a three-year term and will be eligible for an extension of up to two more years, following a performance review. Chandra has also been appointed for a three-year term.  ♦ Kumar has held various key positions at PNB, including Chief General Manager (Corporate Credit), Zonal Manager, and CEO of PNB Operations at the Dubai International Financial Centre. ♦ Kumar began his banking career at PNB as a management trainee in 1994 and was elevated to the position of executive director in November 2022. ♦ Chandra, who joined Canara Bank as an executive director in November 2022, oversaw various verticals, including digital banking and information technology, strategy and planning, marketing and public relations, financial inclusion, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME), retail assets, agriculture, and priority sectors. ♦ The top posts at PNB and Indian Bank fell vacant after the tenures of Atul Kumar Goel and SL Jain, respectively, ended on 31 December 2024.

♦ India has ranked 25th globally and second in the "Future of Work" category in the QS World Future Skills Index 2025. ♦ It just after the United States, with a score of 99.1. India is categorised as a ‘future skills contender’ in the index. ♦ The QS World Future Skills Index classifies economies into four categories based on their performance: aspiring, practitioner, contender, and pioneer. India’s position as a ‘contender’ reflects its progress in developing future-ready skills. ♦ The Index was published by the UK-based higher education firm QS, which evaluates countries’ readiness to meet evolving global job market demands.
