Martyrs' Day

♦ Martyrs' Day is observed every year on January 30 in memory of Mahatma Gandhi, who was assassinated in 1948. In 2025, it will mark the 77th year since his assassination. ♦ In January 30, 1948, Gandhi was accompanied by his grandnieces to Birla Bhavan in Delhi for an evening prayer meeting. ♦ He was confronted by Hindu nationalist Nathuram Godse, who shot him three times in the chest.

♦ IPS officer Rajesh Nirwan was appointed as the Director General of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) under the Ministry of Civil Aviation. ♦ He is a 1992-batch IPS officer from the Rajasthan cadre.  ♦ BCAS is functioning under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, is responsible for ensuring the security of civil aviation operations across India. ♦ The Bureau plays a pivotal role in maintaining and upgrading aviation security standards in line with international protocols, safeguarding civil aviation operations from acts of unlawful interference.

First country in the African Region to eliminate onchocerciasis

♦ Niger becomes the first country in the African Region to eliminate onchocerciasis. Niger’s Minister of Public Health, Population and Social Affairs Garba Hakimi officially declared that the country is free of onchocerciasis.   ♦ Niger is recognised as the fifth country in the world, the first in Africa, to have successfully halted the transmission of the parasite Onchocerca volvulus. ♦ The other four countries that have reached this milestone are all located in the Americas: Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Mexico. ♦ Onchocerciasis, commonly known as river blindness, is a parasitic disease and is the second leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide, after trachoma.

Gunjan Kedia

♦ Indian-American banker Gunjan Kedia was appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of U.S. Bancorp. Her appointment will be effective from 15 April 2025.   ♦ She also set to make history as the first woman in the bank's history to take up the role. U.S. Bancorp is the fifth largest bank in America.  ♦ Kedia will replace Andy Cecere, who served as the company’s CEO since 2017 and as its Chairman since 2018. ♦ Kedia joined U.S. Bancorp in 2016 and has been an influential leader within the bank, most recently serving as president and overseeing the revenue lines.

Mana Mitra

♦ For the first time in the country, the Andhra Pradesh government has launched WhatsApp Governance titled ‘Mana Mitra’. It allowing citizens to access 161 government services directly through the messaging app. ♦ The services were formally launched by Minister for IT Electronics & Communication and Real Time Governance (RTG) Nara Lokesh in Undavalli, Amaravati on 30 January 2025. ♦ The State government has allotted an official WhatsApp number 9552300009 for availing the services. ♦ Currently, departments such as Endowments, Energy, Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation, Revenue, Anna Canteens, Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and Municipal Administration are covered under this initiative.  ♦ In the second phase, it would start 360 more services.

Indian Newspaper Day

♦ Indian Newspaper Day is observed every year on January 29 to commemorate the introduction of the first newspaper in the pre-Independence era in 1780. ♦ The day aims to promote newspapers by encouraging people to read newspapers every day. Irishman James Augustus Hicky launched the first printed newspaper in India.

Hisashi Takeuchi

♦ Hisashi Takeuchi was reappointed as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO) of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. for a further period of three years till March 31, 2028. ♦ Takeuchi was first appointed as MD and CEO with effect from April 1, 2022, consequent to the completion of the term of his predecessor Kenichi Ayukawa on March 31, 2022. ♦ He has been on the Board of Maruti Suzuki since July 2019 and was Joint Managing Director (Commercial) from April 2021 till his elevation. ♦ He joined Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) in 1986 and has a vast experience in the international operations at SMC as well as in overseas markets.

National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM)

♦ The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the launch of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) with an expenditure of Rs.16,300 crore and expected investment of Rs.18,000 crore by PSUs, etc. ♦ The mission will intensify the exploration of critical minerals within the country and in its offshore areas. ♦ The mission aims to encourage Indian public sector enterprises and private sector companies to acquire critical mineral assets abroad and enhance trade with resource-rich countries. It also proposes development of stockpile of critical minerals within the country. ♦ Till now, Geological Survey of India (GSI) has undertaken 368 exploration projects over the past three years, with 195 projects currently underway, and the mines ministry has auctioned off 24 critical mineral blocks.

Awards at the Republic Day Parade

♦ Uttar Pradesh’s tableau based on the theme ‘Mahakumbh 2025 – Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas’, has won the best tableau award at the Republic Day Parade held on 26th January at Kartavya Path in New Delhi. ♦ While, Tripura’s ‘Eternal Reverence: The worship of 14 Deities in Tripura – Kharchi Puja’ themed tableau has been adjourned 2nd and Andhra Pradesh’s tableau depicting ‘Etikoppaka Bommalu – Eco-Friendly Wooden Toys’ won the 3rd prize.  ♦ Amongst the Central Ministries and Departments, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh’ won the best tableau award.  ♦ Meanwhile, the best Marching Contingent award was won by the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles Contingent among Services, while the Delhi Police Marching Contingent won the award among CAPFs and other auxiliary forces.  ♦ The Central Public Works Department and ‘Jayati Jai Mamah Bharatam’ Dance Group were conferred with the Special Prize: (75 years of the Constitution of India). ♦ In addition, Gujarat won the best tableau award for its ‘Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas’ tableau in the Popular Choice Category, after an online poll was conducted on the MyGov portal for citizens to vote for their favourite tableau and Marching Contingents. Uttar Pradesh was the runner-up, while Uttarakhand’s ‘Cultural Heritage and Adventure Sports’ tableau won the 3rd spot.
