World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

♦ World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed every year on June 15 to to raise awareness about abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elders, and reaffirm the commitment to the principle of justice for all. ♦ The day was initiated on June 15, 2006, by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA). ♦ The United Nations (UN) later adopted a resolution on December 19, 2011, recognising the significance of this day. ♦ 2025 theme: "Spotlight on Older Persons in Emergencies."

Kirti Ganorkar

♦ Kirti Ganorkar was appointed as the managing director (MD) of the Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, effective 1 September 2025, for a term of five years. ♦ Dilip Shanghvi, the current MD, will step down from the role and transition to executive chairman of the board.  ♦ Ganorkar joined Sun Pharma in 1996.

Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE)

♦ The Directorate General of Training (DGT), under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), in collaboration with Shell India, launched a Green Skills and Electric Vehicles (EV) training program aimed at equipping students and faculty with future-ready capabilities in green energy and e-mobility.  ♦ This initiative will be implemented by Edunet Foundation, training partner of Shell, across select Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) in Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. ♦ Under the DGT-Shell India collaboration, green skill training will be delivered through a structured multi-tier model across select NSTIs and ITIs. ♦ In the first phase, the program includes a 240-hour advanced EV Technician course at 4 NSTIs, a 90-hour job-oriented EV skills course at 12 ITIs equipped with Shell-supported labs, and a 50-hour foundational green skills module at additional ITIs without physical labs.

UNHCR’s annual Global Trends Report

♦ According to UNHCR’s annual Global Trends Report, the number of forcibly displaced people across the world stood at 122.1 million by the end of April 2025. ♦ The main drivers of displacement remain large conflicts like Sudan, Myanmar and Ukraine and the continued failure to stop the fighting.   ♦ record 123.2 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced from their homes at the end of 2024 — one in 67 of the global population. ♦ According to the report, Sudan has become the country with the most forcibly displaced people, with 14.3 million refugees and people who have been driven from their homes but remained in the country. ♦ Syria still accounts for 13.5 million forcibly displaced, followed by Afghanistan (10.3 million) and Ukraine (8.8 million). ♦ The number of internally displaced people (IDPs) grew sharply by 6.3 million to reach 73.5 million by the end of 2024, meaning that 60% of those forced to flee their homes never leave their own country. ♦ The report found that 67% of refugees stay in neighbouring countries, with three-quarters of refugees being taken in by low and middle-income nations. ♦ This runs counter to the widespread perception in many wealthier nations that they are the main refugee destinations, the agency said. ♦ The largest refugee populations are currently in Iran (3.5 million), Turkey (2.9 million), Colombia (2.8 million), Germany (2.7 million) and Uganda (1.8 million).

World Blood Donor day

♦ World Blood Donor day is celebrated every year on June 14. ♦ This is a global tribute to the millions of voluntary, unpaid blood donors who give others a second chance at life. ♦ The day also acts as a platform to highlight the need for safe blood and blood products. ♦ This day was established by the WHO with the first celebration of the event in 2004. ♦ A year later, in 2005, it was officially recognised as a yearly global event by the 58th World Health Assembly. ♦ June 14 was chosen as the date for the annual observance as Austrian physician and biologist Karl Landsteiner, who is regarded as the “founder" of modern blood transfusion, was born on this very day in 1868. ♦ 2025 theme: ‘Give blood, give hope: together we save lives’.

Indian army has successfully conducted trials of the Rudrastra

♦ The Indian army has successfully conducted trials of the Rudrastra, a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed for deep-strike missions. ♦ The trials have been conducted at the Pokhran firing range, with the drones demonstrating their ability to take down targets at a range of over 50 km. ♦ This was developed by Solar Aerospace and Defence Limited (SDAL). ♦ This indigenous drone demonstrated its capacity to carry out cross-border attacks and neutralize high-value targets, reflecting the armed forces’ growing reliance on homegrown technology for modern warfare.

Garuda Aerospace's new Agri-Drone

♦ Union Minister of State for Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan inaugurated Garuda Aerospace's new Agri-Drone Indigenization Facility in Chennai on 14 June 2025. ♦ The Minister also inaugurated 300 Centres of Excellence (CoE) and flagged off Garuda Aerospace’s DGCA approved Train the Trainer (TTT) programme.  ♦ The new facility marks the expansion of Garuda Aerospace's existing manufacturing unit and is a major leap in advancing drone manufacturing and skill development in India. ♦ The Train the Trainer (TTT) programme is Garuda Aerospace's flagship skill building and development initiative which is designed to empower educators and professionals to become certified drone instructors.

South Africa won the  ICC World Test Championship

♦ South Africa won the  ICC World Test Championship (WTC) title on 14 June 2025. ♦ It defeated Australia by five wickets at the Lord's Cricket Ground in London. ♦ This was South Africa's first ICC men's senior major trophy since 1998, with a 27-year wait for an ICC championship coming to an end.  ♦ Aiden Markram was awarded with the player of the match for his 4th inning century which helped the team to win title.  ♦ With this victory, South Africa bagged a prize money of $3.6 million (approx. Rs 31.05 crore). ♦ Runner-up Australia also got $2.16 million (approx. Rs 18.63 crore). ♦ India, which finished third in the 2023-25 WTC cycle, also received Rs 12.42 crore.

మాగ్నా కార్టా డే

ప్రస్తుతం ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా అనేక దేశాలు ప్రజాస్వామ్య విధానంలోనే ప్రభుత్వాలను ఏర్పాటు చేస్తున్నాయి. అందరూ సమానం, అందరికీ స్వాతంత్య్రం అనేవి ఇందులో ప్రధాన నియమాలు. స్వేచ్ఛ, మానవ హక్కులకు ఇందులో ప్రాధాన్యం ఉంటుంది. ఇలాంటి మహోన్నత ప్రజాస్వామ్య వ్యవస్థ ఏర్పాటుకు ప్రేరణగా నిలిచిన ‘మాగ్నా కార్టా’ ప్రకటనకు గుర్తుగా ఏటా జూన్‌ 15న ‘మాగ్నా కార్టా డే’గా నిర్వహిస్తారు.  చారిత్రక నేపథ్యం: ఇంగ్లండ్‌ రాజైన కింగ్‌ జాన్‌ ఎడ్వర్డ్‌ (1167-1216) పాలనలో ప్రజలు అనేక కష్ట, నష్టాలను ఎదుర్కొన్నారు. ఈయన జనాల నుంచి అధిక పన్నులు వసూలు చేయడంతోపాటు వారిని కఠినంగా శిక్షించేవాడు. చర్చిలపై ప్రభుత్వ జోక్యం అధికంగా ఉండేది. ఇతడి నిరంకుశత్వానికి వ్యతిరేకంగా ఇంగ్లిష్‌ బారన్లు (సామంతులు), చర్చి నాయకులు రహస్యంగా సమావేశమై రాజు అధికారాన్ని పరిమితం చేయాలని ‘మాగ్నా కార్టా’ అనే పత్రాన్ని రూపొందించారు. రాజుతో సహా ప్రజలందరూ చట్టానికి లోబడే ఉంటారనే సూత్రాన్ని ఇందులో ప్రతిపాదించారు. అలాగే ప్రజలకు వివిధ హక్కులు కల్పించి, వారి రక్షణ కోసం ప్రత్యేక నియమాలు రూపొందించారు. మొదట జాన్‌ ఎడ్వర్డ్‌ దీన్ని ఆమోదించలేదు. అయితే ప్రజల్లో ఇతడిపై వ్యతిరేకత ఎక్కువవడంతో దానికి తలొగ్గి 1215, జూన్‌ 15న మాగ్నా కార్టాపై సంతకం చేశాడు.
