World Lake Day

US tariffs

♦ US tariffs of 50% on goods from India took effect on 27 August 2025. ♦ With this move, the overall tariff burden on Indian products entering the American market could climb to as high as 50 percent—one of the steepest rates imposed by the US. ♦ Indian exporters are preparing for setbacks. ♦ As per a report published by the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), the increase in tariff is expected to affect nearly US$12.5 billion worth of exports from India, particularly in products outside the steel, aluminum, and automobile categories.

Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS)

♦ According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), the women’s workforce participation rate (WPR) has nearly doubled from 22% in 2017-18 to 40.3% in 2023-24. ♦ The unemployment rate for women has also dropped from 5.6% to 3.2% in the same period. ♦ Rural India has witnessed the sharpest rise, with female employment growing by 96%, while urban areas recorded a 43% increase. ♦ The employability of women graduates has steadily improved, reaching 47.53% in 2024, compared to 42% in 2013. ♦ Among women with postgraduate and higher education, the employment rate has risen from 34.5% in 2017-18 to 40% in 2023-24. ♦ Meanwhile, the India Skills Report 2025 projects that 55% of Indian graduates will be globally employable in 2025, up from 51.2% last year.

Lithuanian as Prime Minister Ruginiene

♦ The Lithuanian parliament approved the appointment of Social Democrat Inga Ruginiene as Lithuania’s new Prime Minister on 26 August 2025. ♦ Ruginiene was elected to parliament for the first time in 2024. ♦ Before her political career, she served as chair of the Lithuanian Trade Union Confederation.

Nilgiri-class stealth guided-missile frigates

♦ The Indian Navy commissioned two Nilgiri-class stealth guided-missile frigates, the INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri, at Visakhapatnam on 26 August 2025. ♦ These are follow on ships of the Project 17 (Shivalik) class frigates.   ♦ Udaygiri, built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. (MDL),  Mumbai, and Himgiri, constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.  ♦ Udaygiri also holds the distinction of being the fastest ship of her class to be delivered post-launch, a result of the modular construction methodology adopted by Indian shipyards. ♦ Displacing about 6,700 tons, the P17A frigates are roughly 5% larger than their predecessor Shivalik-class frigates. ♦ The new frigates are sleeker with a reduced radar cross section and incorporate significant improvements in design, stealth, weapon and sensor systems.

Sift Kaur Samra

♦ India's Sift Kaur Samra clinched two gols medals at the Asian Shooting Championships in Shymkent, Kazakhstan on 26 August 2025. ♦ She won the gold medal in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions event and also bagged the team gold with Ashi Chouksey and Anjum Moudgil. ♦ In the individual final, Sift Kaur Samra tallied 459.2 to top the standings ahead of the People’s Republic of China’s Yujie Yang, who shot 458.8. ♦ The trio of Samra, stalwart Anjum Moudgil and Ashi Chouksey also bagged the top podium in the team event with an aggregate of 1753 points.

Koyel Bar

♦ Indian weightlifter Koyel Bar made history by setting two new youth world records and winning both the youth and junior titles in the women’s 53kg event at the Commonwealth Championships on 26 August 2025. ♦ Competing in the junior and youth categories, the teenager achieved a remarkable total lift of 192kg (85kg+107kg). ♦ She equalled the snatch youth world record with an 85kg lift and then surpassed the clean and jerk record of 105kg by lifting 107kg in her second attempt. ♦ This feat also broke the previous youth world total record of 188kg. ♦ Koyel’s performance was three kilograms more than her compatriot Sneha Soren, who won silver in the senior category with a total of 185kg (81kg + 104kg). ♦ However, Sneha was outperformed by Nigeria’s Omolola Didih, who set new Commonwealth snatch and total records with 197kg (90kg + 107kg).

OpenAI Learning Accelerator

♦ OpenAI launched the 'OpenAI Learning Accelerator' in New Delhi on 25 August 2025. ♦ This is India's first initiative that aims to bring advanced AI to India’s educators and millions of learners nationwide through AI research, training, and deployment.  ♦ As part of the OpenAI Learning Accelerator, the AI platform announced a new research collaboration with IIT Madras, backed by $500,000 in funding from OpenAI to conduct long-term studies on how AI can “improve learning outcomes, foster innovative teaching methods, aligned to insights from cognitive neuroscience”.

Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka met Narendra Modi

♦ Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on 25 August 2025. ♦ On this occation both nations firmed up an action plan to boost defence ties and agreed to jointly work for a peaceful and inclusive Indo-Pacific as PM Modi and Rabuka held talks to expand the overall bilateral cooperation. ♦ Rabuka arrived in New Delhi on August 24 with his spouse Sulueti Rabuka and a high-level delegation, including Health and Medical Services Minister Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu and senior government officials.

Rajiv Anand

♦ Rajiv Anand was appointed as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the IndusInd Bank on 25 August 2025. ♦ The RBI has also approved his appointment. He will be in this position until August 24, 2028.  ♦ Rajiv Anand brings with him over 35 years of experience in the banking and financial services industry. ♦ In his most recent role, he served as Deputy Managing Director at Axis Bank Limited.
