World Pulses Day

♦ World Pulses Day is observed annually on February 10 around the globe to raise awareness about the importance of pulses as a crop. It also emphasises the nutritional value, food security and environmental advantages of pulses.   ♦ In 2013, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/RES/68/231), recognising 2016 as the International Year of Pulses. Led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Later in 2019, the UN General Assembly declared February 10 to be observed as World Pulses Day.

Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2025

♦ India climbed five places to the 91st position out of 182 countries and territories on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2025 released on 10 February 2026. India's score has gone up by one point since the previous year, while its rank has improved from 96th position, according to the latest CPI from the global NGO Transparency International. ♦ The CPI ranks 182 countries and territories worldwide by their perceived levels of public sector corruption. The results are given on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). ♦ Denmark retained its position at the top of the index, scoring 89 points, ahead of Finland and Singapore. At the other end of the scale were South Sudan and Somalia, both registering nine points, followed by Venezuela. The leading three nations saw no change, while South Sudan's one-point gain brought it level with Somalia. ♦ While the US has been ranked at the 29th spot, the UK bagged the 20th spot.

India and the United Kingdom

♦ India and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland signed an agreement on social security relating to Social Security Contributions in New Delhi on 10 February 2026. The agreement seeks to avoid double social security contributions for employees of both countries on temporary assignments in each other’s territories for periods of up to 36 months. ♦ The Agreement was signed by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri for the Indian side and by the British High Commissioner to India, Lindy Cameron for the UK side. ♦ According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India has been entering into bilateral Social Security Agreements (SSAs) with other countries in order to protect the interests of Indian professionals/skilled workers working abroad for short durations and enhance the competitiveness of Indian companies. ♦ It may be recalled that at the time of signing of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between India and the United Kingdom in July 2025, both governments had committed to concluding an agreement on social security.

NITI Aayog

♦ NITI Aayog released the first set of study reports outlining India’s development pathways towards achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047 while progressing towards Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2070. The reports form part of India’s first government-led, multi-sectoral and integrated assessment of long-term development and climate transition scenarios. ♦ The think tank is releasing a total of eleven reports on February 9 and 10, 2026. According to the findings, India can achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 under all assessed scenarios while remaining aligned with its Net Zero commitment. The reports note that India’s coal consumption will go up till 2047 even as energy intensity decreases and efficiency goes up, while meeting Net Zero goals, underscoring the need for a calibrated and just transition. ♦ One of the key reports released, Scenarios towards Viksit Bharat and Net Zero: Financing Needs, estimates that India will require an unprecedented investment of about $22.7 trillion by 2070 to achieve Net Zero, with a financing gap of approximately $6.5 trillion that will need to be bridged through external sources and stronger global capital integration.

India’s doctor-population

♦ India’s doctor-population ratio has improved to 1:811, surpassing the World Health Organization (WHO) benchmark of 1:1000, according to data shared by the Union government in Parliament on 10 February 2026. Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, said the country currently has 13,88,185 registered allopathic doctors and 7,51,768 registered AYUSH practitioners. Assuming that 80 percent of registered practitioners in both systems are actively available, the estimated doctor-population ratio stands at 1:811. ♦ The Minister said the data is based on Health Dynamics of India (Infrastructure & Human Resources) 2022–23, an annual publication compiled using healthcare administrative data reported by states and Union Territories. According to figures from the Indian Nursing Council (INC), India has 39.40 lakh nursing personnel. Assuming 80 per cent of them are active, the nurse-to-population ratio works out to 2.23 nurses per 1,000 population. ♦ To meet the growing demand for nursing professionals, the country currently has 5,310 nursing institutions, including 806 government-run institutions, which together produce nearly 3.82 lakh nursing personnel annually, the Minister said.

White Revolution 2.0

♦ The Centre has launched a cooperative-led initiative, “White Revolution 2.0”, aimed at expanding cooperative coverage in the dairy sector, generating employment and strengthening women’s empowerment. The initiative, launched by the Ministry of Cooperation, seeks to increase milk procurement by dairy cooperatives by 50 percent from the present level over the next five years by providing market access to dairy farmers in uncovered areas and increasing the share of dairy cooperatives in the organised sector. ♦ In absolute terms, milk procurement by dairy cooperatives is expected to reach 1,007 lakh kg per day by the end of 2028–29, the fifth year of implementation. The target will be achieved through a two-pronged strategy focusing on expanding the coverage of dairy cooperatives and deepening their reach. ♦ The programme also addresses issues of malnutrition through a series of activities under White Revolution 2.0. These include the setting up and strengthening of around 1.20 lakh new and existing Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCS), Multipurpose Dairy Cooperative Societies (M-DCS) and Multipurpose Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (M-PACS). The cooperatives will be linked with milk routes through the expansion of existing routes or the creation of new ones. ♦ Under the initiative, 75,000 new Dairy Cooperative Societies are proposed to be set up in uncovered areas, while 46,422 existing DCSs will be strengthened to enhance market access, income opportunities and nutritional availability.
