world’s longest expressway tunnel

♦ China has officially opened the world’s longest expressway tunnel in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on 26 December 2025. ♦ The Tianshan Shengli Tunnel, stretching 22.13 kilometres, is now open to traffic, after five years of construction. ♦ This expressway tunnel dramatically reduces travel time through the formidable Tianshan mountain range. ♦ This is a great step towards reinforcing Xinjiang’s strategic importance in domestic and international trade corridors. ♦ The tunnel is the core of the Urumqi–Yuli Expressway, a project designed to bridge the long-standing geographic divide between northern and southern Xinjiang. ♦ As the tunnel is now operational, the seven-hour long trip across the mountains is now completed in approximately three and a half hours. ♦ The journey through the mountains has been reduced to just 20 minutes (approximately).

Indian Standard for incense sticks (agarbatti)

♦ The union government issued a notification announcing a new Indian Standard for incense sticks (agarbatti), laying down quality norms and specifying a list of substances prohibited for use in their manufacture. ♦ The standard has been developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to ensure safer products and promote responsible and sustainable practices in the incense stick industry. ♦ To address these issues, IS 19412:2025 specifies a list of substances prohibited for use in agarbattis. ♦ According to the notification, the standard classifies agarbattis into machine-made, hand-made, and traditional masala agarbattis, and prescribes norms for raw materials, burning quality, fragrance performance and chemical parameters. ♦ India is the world’s largest producer and exporter of agarbattis. ♦ The industry is estimated at around Rs 8,000 crore annually, with exports worth nearly Rs 1,200 crore to over 150 countries, including the US, Malaysia, Nigeria, Brazil and Mexico.

ప్రపంచ ర్యాపిడ్‌ ఛాంపియన్‌షిప్‌లో కాంస్యం గెలిచిన తెలంగాణ కుర్రాడు అర్జున్‌ ఇరిగేశి.. బ్లిట్జ్‌ విభాగంలోనూ కంచు పతకం నెగ్గి ‘డబుల్‌’ సాధించాడు. విశ్వనాథన్‌ ఆనంద్‌ (2017) తర్వాత ఒకే టోర్నీలో రెండు విభాగాల్లో పతకాలు గెలిచిన ఘనత అర్జున్‌దే. నార్వే స్టార్‌ మాగ్నస్‌ కార్ల్‌సన్‌ బ్లిట్జ్‌ టోర్నీ ట్రోఫీని దక్కించుకున్నాడు. ఈ టైటిల్‌ గెలవడం అతడికి తొమ్మిదోసారి. మొత్తంగా అతడికిది 20వ ప్రపంచ టైటిల్‌. మహిళల విభాగంలో బిబిసారా అసుబయెవా (కజకిస్థాన్‌) విజేతగా నిలిచింది.

ఖాలిదా జియా కన్నుమూత

బంగ్లాదేశ్‌కు తొలి మహిళా ప్రధానిగా సేవలందించిన బేగం ఖాలిదా జియా (80) 2025, డిసెంబరు 30న ఢాకాలో మరణించారు. ఆమె బంగ్లాదేశ్‌ నేషనలిస్టు పార్టీ (బీఎన్‌పీ) అధ్యక్షురాలు కూడా. మూడుసార్లు ప్రధానిగా పనిచేశారు. ఆమె 1946 ఆగస్టు 15న అవిభాజ్య భారత్‌లోని దినాజ్‌పుర్‌ జిల్లాలో జన్మించారు. 1960లో ఖాలిదా.. సైనిక కెప్టెన్‌ జియావుర్‌ రహ్మాన్‌ను వివాహం చేసుకున్నారు. బంగ్లాదేశ్‌కు జియావుర్‌ అధ్యక్షుడిగా పనిచేశారు. 1981 మే 30న సైనిక తిరుగుబాటు సందర్భంగా అధ్యక్షుడు జియావుర్‌ హత్యకు గురయ్యారు. దీంతో ఆమె రాజకీయాల్లోకి రావాల్సి వచ్చింది. 1978లో తన భర్త స్థాపించిన బీఎన్‌పీకి ఆయన హత్యానంతరం 1984లో ఛైర్‌పర్సన్‌ అయ్యారు. అప్పటి నుంచి చనిపోయే వరకూ ఆ పదవిలో కొనసాగారు.
