Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF)

♦ Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu and Commonwealth Games gold medallist S. Sathish Kumar have been elected chairperson and vice-chairperson, respectively, of the Athletes’ Commission of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF). ♦ Their term will last four years.  ♦ Mirabai is one of India’s most decorated weightlifters, holding multiple national records and historic milestones to her name. ♦ Her personal best in the total lift is 205kg — 86kg in snatch and 119kg in clean and jerk — which also stands as the national record. ♦ She holds the national record in snatch as well, with a lift of 88kg. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, she became the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver medal. ♦ Sathish had clinched a gold medal in weightlifting at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. ♦ Competing in the men’s 77kg category, he lifted a total of 317kg — 144kg in snatch and 173kg in clean and jerk.

NITI Aayog

♦ NITI Aayog launched a report on Hand and Power tools sectors – ‘Unlocking $25+ Billion Export Potential - India’s Hand & Power Tools Sector’. ♦ The global trade market for power and hand tools, valued at $100bn, is projected to reach Rs. 16,25,830 crore (US$ 190 billion) by 2035. ♦ Hand tools are expected to expand from Rs. 2,90,938 crore (US$ 34 billion) to Rs. 5,13,420 crore (US$ 60 billion). In contrast, power tools, including tool accessories, are anticipated to surge from Rs. 5,39,091 crore (US$ 63 billion) to Rs. 11,46,638 crore (US$ 134 billion). ♦ India currently has a smaller presence in the global market, exporting Rs. 5,134 crore (US$ 600 million) in hand tools (1.8% market share) and Rs. 4,022 crore (US$ 470 million) in power tools (0.7% market share).  ♦ However, the report highlights that India can potentially capture a larger global market share, targeting Rs. 2,13,925 crore (US$ 25 billion) in exports over the next decade. ♦ This could create approximately 35 lakh jobs by achieving a 10% market share in power tools and 25% in hand tools.

B.R. Gavai

♦ Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna recommended Justice B.R. Gavai, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor on 16 April 2025. ♦ Justice Gavai is expected to be sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14. ♦ Justice Khanna was appointed as CJI on November 11, 2024, succeeding former CJI D Y Chandrachud, who retired on November 10. Khanna is due to retire on May 13, having served a tenure of six months. ♦ The retirement age of Supreme Court judges is 65 years.  ♦ Justice Gavai’s tenure as CJI will span over six months, concluding on 2025 November 23. ♦ Justice Gavai was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 29, 2019. He was first appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in November 2003 and became a permanent judge in November 2005. ♦ He served as Standing Counsel for the Municipal Corporation of Nagpur, Amravati Municipal Corporation, and Amravati University. ♦ He was appointed Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor at the Bombay High Court (Nagpur Bench) in August 1992, serving until July 1993. ♦ He later became Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor for the Nagpur Bench on January 17, 2000.

India-Uzbekistan Joint Military Exercise DUSTLIK-VI

♦ The 6th edition of the India-Uzbekistan Joint Military Exercise DUSTLIK-VI commenced at the Foreign Training Node in Aundh, Pune on 16 April 2025. ♦ The exercise will continue till April 28 and aims to enhance interoperability and cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries. ♦ DUSTLIK is an annual military training initiative held alternately in India and Uzbekistan. ♦ The previous edition took place in the Termez District of Uzbekistan in April 2024. ♦ This year’s (2025) exercise focuses on Joint Multi-Domain Sub-Conventional Operations in a semi-urban scenario. ♦ It will simulate counter-terrorism missions involving territory capture, establishment of a Joint Operations Centre at the battalion level, population control measures, raids, search-and-destroy operations, and coordinated use of air assets.

అమెరికానే అతి పెద్ద వాణిజ్య భాగస్వామి

2024-25 ఆర్థిక సంవత్సరంలోనూ మన దేశానికి అతి పెద్ద వాణిజ్య భాగస్వామిగా అమెరికా నిలిచింది. ఈ పరిణామం సంభవించడం వరుసగా ఇది నాలుగో ఏడాది. రెండు దేశాల మధ్య ద్వైపాక్షిక వాణిజ్యం 131.84 బి.డాలర్లుగా నమోదైంది. భారత్‌ నుంచి అమెరికాకు ఎగుమతులు 2023-24లో 77.52 బి.డాలర్లు కాగా, గతేడాది 11.6% పెరిగి 86.51 బి.డాలర్లకు చేరాయి. దిగుమతులు 42.2 బి.డాలర్ల నుంచి 7.44% పెరిగి 45.33 బి.డాలర్లకు చేరాయి. దీంతో వాణిజ్య మిగులు 35.32 బి.డాలర్ల నుంచి 41.18 బి.డాలర్లకు పెరిగింది.  2024-25లో భారత్‌కు అతి పెద్ద రెండో వాణిజ్య భాగస్వామిగా చైనా నిలిచింది. ఈ సమయంలో చైనాకు భారత ఎగుమతులు 14.5% తగ్గి 14.25 బి.డాలర్లకు పరిమితమయ్యాయి. 2023-24లో ఇవి 16.66 బి.డాలర్లుగా ఉన్నాయి. దిగుమతులు మాత్రం 101.73 బి.డాలర్ల నుంచి 11.52% పెరిగి 113.45 బి.డాలర్లకు చేరాయి. దీంతో వాణిజ్య లోటు 85.07 బి.డాలర్ల నుంచి 99.2 బి.డాలర్లకు చేరింది. రెండు దేశాల ద్వైపాక్షిక వాణిజ్యం 118.4 బి.డాలర్ల నుంచి 127.7 బి.డాలర్లకు చేరింది.
