National Vaccination Day

♦ National Vaccination Day is observed evary year on March 16 to commemorate the successful launch of the Pulse Polio Immunization Programme in India. ♦ It was in 1995 when the first dose of oral polio vaccination was administered in India on the same date. on March 27, 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) proclaimed India polio-free. ♦ 2025 theme: "Immunization for All is Humanly Possible."

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

♦ UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres launched the "UN80 Initiative" to improve the organization’s efficiency and effectiveness as it marks its 80th anniversary. ♦ The initiative will come up with proposals in areas of rapidly identifying efficiencies and improvements in the way the UN works; thoroughly reviewing implementation of all mandates given to the UN by member states, which have significantly increased in recent years and a strategic review of deeper, more structural changes and programme realignment in the UN system. ♦ He highlighted the global challenges and stated, "The United Nations has never been more needed."

The fourth conference of global intelligence and security chiefs

♦ The fourth conference of global intelligence and security chiefs was held in New Delhi on 16 March 2025. ♦ This was hosted by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Around 20 countries were represented at the conference, including the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Russia. ♦ U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard attended the meeting and also held talks with Doval.  ♦ The chiefs of the Five Eyes countries, comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the U.S., were all present, though it was not clear if a separate meeting of the Five Eyes chiefs with Mr. Doval was in the offing. ♦ The conference was held for the first time in April 2022 a day before the start of the Raisina Dialogue, India’s flagship conference on “geopolitics and geo-strategy”, organised by the Ministry of External Affairs in collaboration with the Observer Research Foundation (ORF).

♦ India and New Zealand have announced the launch of negotiations for a comprehensive and mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations. ♦ This significant step was marked by a meeting between Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and  Minister for Trade and Investment of New Zealand Todd McClay in New Delhi on 16 March 2025. ♦ The FTA negotiations aim to unlock new avenues for businesses and consumers, fostering mutual growth and prosperity of India and New Zealand. ♦ The negotiations are aimed at achieving balanced outcomes that enhance supply chain integration and improve market access.

♦ World Consumer Rights Day is observed every year on March 15 to raise awareness of consumer rights, consumer protection and empowerment. ♦ This day was inspired by US President John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s speech to the US Congress on March 15, 1962. ♦ The day was first commemorated on March 15, 1983.  ♦ 2025 theme: “A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles".

Harmanpreet Singh

♦ India captain Harmanpreet Singh and senior goalkeeper Savita Punia won the Hockey India Balbir Singh Senior Player of the Year (2024) award in the men’s and women’s categories respectively on 15 March 2025.  ♦ Harmanpreet led India to its second consecutive bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. ♦ He was also a part of the Tokyo Games bronze medal-winning side. Savita was a member of the Indian team that came agonisingly close to winning a bronze in the Tokyo Olympics. ♦ The team had lost the third-place match to Great Britain. Savita also won the Hockey India Baljit Singh Goalkeeper of the Year award for 2024. ♦ The seventh Hockey India Annual Awards were held to commemorate 100 years of Indian hockey and also to celebrate the country’s World Cup win in 1975 in Kuala Lumpur. ♦ The 1975 Men’s World Cup-winning team was conferred with the Hockey India Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement award. ♦ Abhishek won the Forward of the Year award while Hardik Singh was named Midfielder of the Year. ♦ The Best Defender of the Year award went to Amit Rohidas. ♦ Araijeet Singh Hundal won the Jugraj Singh player of the year (Men’s Under-21), while Deepika bagged the Player of the Year award in the women’s Under-21 category.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)

♦ The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully completed the flight acceptance hot testing of the cryogenic engine designated for the sixth operational mission of the LVM3 launch vehicle (LVM-M6). ♦ The test was conducted at the ISRO Propulsion Complex in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu. The LVM3, also known as Launch Vehicle Mark-3, is a three-stage medium-lift launch vehicle developed by ISRO.   ♦ According to ISRO, the CE20 engine’s performance during the test met all objectives, with parameters closely aligning with predictions throughout the test duration.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI)

♦ The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was selected for the Digital Transformation Award 2025 by Central Banking at London in UK. ♦ The central bank was awarded for its digital initiatives named Pravaah and Sarthi, which were developed by its in-house developer team. ♦ The awards committee noted how these digital initiatives have reduced the use of paper-based submissions, thus transforming RBI’s internal and external processes. ♦ Sarthi, launched in January 2023, digitised RBI’s internal workflows, enabling its employees to store and share documents securely, improving record management, and increasing the options for data analysis through reports and dashboards. ♦ Sarthi has helped the RBI boost operational efficiency by automating processes. ♦ Launched in May 2024 as Pravaah, a digitised means was created for external users to submit regulatory applications to the RBI. ♦ Documents submitted and processed through the portal are plugged into the Sarthi database, where they can be handled digitally across RBI offices, with centralised cybersecurity systems and digital tracking.
