Chief Executive Officer of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation

♦ Dr. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) on 17 March 2025. ♦ He replaced Professor Abhay Karandikar. Shivkumar earlier held the post of Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Energy Industry, Asia at Microsoft is a Distinguished Alumnus Awardee of IIT Madras & Ohio State University (2021).  ♦ ANRF will act as an apex body to provide high-level strategic direction of scientific research in the country as per recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP).

Justice Joymalya Bagchi was sworn in as a judge

♦ Justice Joymalya Bagchi was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court on 17 March 20205. ♦ Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna administered the oath of office to Justice Bagchi in the Supreme Court premises. ♦ He was a Calcutta High Court judge prior to his appointment to the apex court. ♦ The appointment of Justice Bagchi raises the judicial strength of the Supreme Court to 33. The court’s vacancy has been reduced to one. ♦ Justice Bagchi was appointed as a judge of the High Court at Calcutta on June 27, 2011 and transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on January 4, 2021. ♦ He was repatriated to the Calcutta High Court on November 8, 2021 and has been functioning there since then. ♦ He has served as a judge of the High Court for more than 13 years. ♦ Justice Bagchi would have a tenure of more than six years before he assume the office of the Chief Justice of India. ♦ As per the seniority norm, Justice Bagchi would take over the office of the CJI in May 2031 and continue till his retirement on October 2, 2031.

♦ The International Olympic Committee executive board on 17 March 2025 recommended the inclusion of boxing in the Los Angeles 2028 summer Olympics. ♦ The IOC last month (February 2025) granted provisional recognition to World Boxing in a major step towards the sport’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympics. ♦ The boxing competition at the Paris 2024 Games was run by the IOC after it had stripped the International Boxing Association of recognition in 2023 over its failure to implement reforms on governance and finance. ♦ The IOC had not included the sport on the initial LA 2028 programme, having urged national boxing federations to create a new global boxing body. ♦ World Boxing, now with more than 80 national federations as members, was launched in 2023.

♦ Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched a dedicated mobile application for the Prime Minister Internship Scheme and urged more companies to join the programme on 17 March 2025. ♦ The mobile app, designed to facilitate easy access to internship opportunities, features an intuitive interface with a clean design, making it user-friendly and easy to navigate. ♦ Through the app, eligible candidates can register effortlessly using Aadhaar face authentication.  ♦ The Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme, which was announced in the Union Budget for 2024-25, aims to provide internships to one crore youth in the top 500 companies over the next five years. ♦ The scheme was designed to offer paid internship opportunities and to equip young people with the skills required to bridge the gap between academic education and industry needs. ♦ The initiative began with a pilot project launched on October 3, 2024, which targeted the provision of 1.25 lakh internship opportunities for the financial year 2024-25.

Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs)

♦ As per data from the Bureau of Immigration, India recorded 9.52 million Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in 2023, reflecting a 47.90% increase compared to 2022. ♦ The number of FTAs for Leisure, Holiday, and Recreation in 2023 was 4.40 million, registering an 86.96% growth compared to 2022. Similarly, FTAs for Business and Professional purposes stood at 0.98 million in 2023, marking a 49.66% increase from the previous year. ♦ Foreign tourist arrivals have now recovered to 87.1% of pre-pandemic levels, closely aligning with the global recovery rate of 88.8%, and significantly surpassing the Asia-Pacific region’s recovery rate of 65.4%. ♦ The Ministry of Tourism has implemented various initiatives to support this growth, including the development of tourism infrastructure through schemes like ‘Swadesh Darshan,’ ‘PRASHAD,’ and financial assistance to states for tourism development. ♦ The Ministry also promotes India’s tourism offerings through campaigns such as ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ and ‘Chalo India,’ along with events like the International Tourism Mart and Bharat Parv. ♦ India’s e-Visa scheme, which is available to citizens of 167 countries across nine categories, including e-Tourist, e-Business, and e-Medical visas, has further streamlined the entry process for foreign visitors, contributing to the rise in FTAs.

♦ Prime Minister of New Zealand, Christopher Luxon met PM Narendra Modi at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi on 17 March 2025. ♦ India and New Zealand have signed five agreements in the fields of Defence, Education, Sports, Horticulture, and Forestry. ♦ Both sides also exchanged the Authorized Economic Operator Mutual Recognition Agreement. ♦ Two countries announced the launch of negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement and negotiations on an arrangement facilitating the mobility of professionals and skilled workers. ♦ New Zealand has joined the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative and has become a member of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. ♦ The bilateral trade between India and New Zealand stood at $873.4 million in 2023-24 financial year compared to $1.02 billion in 2022-23. ♦ Luxon arrived in New Delhi on March 16 for a five-day official visit to India.

తెలుగు విశ్వవిద్యాలయానికి తెలంగాణ వైతాళికుడు సురవరం ప్రతాపరెడ్డి పేరును పెట్టే బిల్లుకు శాసనసభ 2025, మార్చి 17న ఆమోదం తెలిపింది. గవర్నర్‌ ఆమోదముద్ర వేసిన వెంటనే రికార్డుల్లో పేరు మారనుంది. పేరు మార్పునకు సంబంధించిన బిల్లును వైద్యారోగ్య శాఖ మంత్రి దామోదర్‌ రాజనర్సింహ శాసనసభలో ప్రవేశపెట్టారు. ఉమ్మడి ఆంధ్రప్రదేశ్‌లో 1983లో అప్పటి ముఖ్యమంత్రి ఎన్టీఆర్‌ చొరవతో విశ్వవిద్యాలయం ఏర్పాటైంది.
