National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences

♦ The Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans), Bengaluru, have signed an agreement for collaborative research and training aimed at enhancing mental health support and care for the Armed Forces on 20 March 2025.  ♦ The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services, and Dr Pratima Murthy, Director of Nimhans, at a function attended by senior officials from both institutions. ♦ The collaboration will focus on strengthening mental health services, conducting specialized training for medical personnel, and developing innovative programmes to address the mental health issues faced by soldiers, sailors, airmen, their families, and dependants. ♦ The key objectives of the MoU include collaborative research, faculty exchange, and academic activities. ♦ Nimhans, with its expertise in neuropsychiatry, will assist in conducting research on advanced psychiatric care and support to military personnel, addressing common issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression.

International Olympic Committee

♦ Kirsty Coventry was elected President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 20 March 2025, for an eight-year term of office. ♦ She becoming the first woman and first African to lead the world’s wealthiest multi-sport organization in its 130-year history. ♦ She replaces outgoing President Thomas Bach, who was first elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2021. ♦ She received 49 votes in the first round, exactly the number required for a majority from the 97 votes cast. ♦ Kirsty will assume office after the handover from President Bach on Olympic Day, 23 June 2025. ♦ At the 2004 Games in Athens, Coventry won the gold medal in the 200-meter backstroke. ♦ Four years later, in 2008 in Beijing, she won gold again. In addition to those two gold medals, she collected four Olympic silver medals and one bronze.

World Happiness Report

♦ The Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford released the World Happiness Report 2025 on March 20, the International Day of Happiness. ♦ The report was designed in collaboration with Gallup, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and an independent editorial board. ♦ Finland continues to hold the title of the world’s happiest country, followed by Denmark and Iceland. ♦The annual index evaluates nations based on social, physical, and emotional support factors influencing well-being. ♦ At the bottom of the ranking, Afghanistan recorded the lowest happiness score, with many Afghan women reporting worsening living conditions. Sierra Leone and Lebanon followed closely behind. ♦ India has climbed eight spots to rank 118th out of 147 countries. ♦ In the 2024 report, India had ranked 126th, the same as in 2023. The country’s lowest ranking was 144th in 2012, while its highest position came in 2022, when it stood at 94. ♦ Pakistan ranks 109th in the index.  ♦ The United Kingdom ranked at 23 and the United States stood at 24th place. ♦ The report ranks countries based on several metrics, including GDP per capita, social support, life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption. ♦ Despite being one of the world's fastest-growing economies, India’s overall happiness score remains low. ♦ The report also looks into the significance of sharing meals as a critical aspect of social connection that promotes overall happiness. RBI research report

♦ According to the RBI research report, India’s energy efficiency improved by 1.9 percent between 2000 and 2023, which is faster than the global average of 1.4 percent. ♦ The report also stated that India was far ahead of the other BRICS countries which averaged 1.62 percent. ♦ However, India’s energy efficiency lagged developed markets, like the US and Germany, which witnessed an over 2 percent rise during this period. ♦ Between 2012 and 2022, India’s energy-related Carbon dioxode emissions rose by 706 million tonnes, primarily driven by economic growth. ♦ A lesser contribution came from changes in the fuel mix.  ♦ Had a small but significant impact on emission reduction over the past decade, with solar and wind accounting for 2.1 percent of total primary energy in 2022-23, the report stated.

Defence Acquisition Council (DAC)

♦ The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoNs) for eight capital acquisition proposals worth over Rs.54,000 crore. ♦ The approvals, aimed at strengthening the Indian Armed Forces, include key procurements for the Army, Navy, and Air Force. ♦ For the Indian Army, the DAC approved the procurement of 1,350 HP engines to upgrade the existing 1,000 HP engines in T-90 tanks. ♦ This enhancement is expected to improve battlefield mobility, particularly in high-altitude areas, by increasing the tanks’ power-to-weight ratio. ♦ For the Indian Navy, the council sanctioned the procurement of Varunastra torpedoes, an indigenously developed ship-launched anti-submarine weapon. ♦ Designed by the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory, these torpedoes will strengthen the Navy’s capabilities in countering submarine threats. ♦  For the Indian Air Force, the DAC approved the acquisition of Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) aircraft systems. ♦ These advanced surveillance aircraft serve as force multipliers, significantly enhancing combat readiness and operational effectiveness across the battlefield. ♦ As part of the Ministry of Defence’s initiative to celebrate 2025 as the ‘Year of Reforms’, the DAC also approved new guidelines aimed at streamlining the capital acquisition process.
