International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

♦ The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed every year on October 17 to raising awareness about the ongoing challenges of poverty worldwide. ♦ On that day, over a hundred thousand people gathered at the Trocadéro in Paris, where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948, to honour the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. ♦ Through resolution 47/196 adopted on 22 December 1992, the General Assembly declared October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and invited all States to devote the Day to presenting and promoting, as appropriate in the national context, concrete activities with regard to the eradication of poverty and destitution. ♦ 2025 theme: Ending social and institutional maltreatment by ensuring respect and effective support for families

Zoravar Singh Sandhu

♦ Zoravar Singh Sandhu won a bronze in the men’s trap event to open India’s medal account at the ISSF World Championship 2025 Shotgun in Athens, Greece, on 17 October 2025. ♦ The Indian shooter finished with a score of 31 hits, placing third in the six-man final at the Malakasa Shooting Range. ♦ It was only India’s third medal in the men’s trap shooting events at the Shotgun World Championships. ♦ Zoravar finished behind former Olympic champion and world champion Josip Glasnovic of Croatia, who won gold with 44-hits, and junior world champion Andres Garcia of Spain who bagged silver with a score of 39. ♦ Manavjeet Singh Sandhu won the gold medal in the men’s trap at Zagreb 2006 while Karni Singh won a silver in the 1962 championships held in Cairo.

Michael Randrianirina

♦ Madagascar’s coup leader Colonel Michael Randrianirina was sworn in as president on 17 October 2025, days after seizing power in a dramatic youth-led uprising that forced out former leader Andry Rajoelina.  ♦ Randrianirina was born in 1974 in Sevohipoty, a small village in the Androy region of southern Madagascar. ♦ He served as governor of Androy from 2016 to 2018 under former President Hery Rajaonarimampianina. ♦ Following that, he commanded an infantry battalion in Toliara until 2022, before being promoted to a senior leadership role in CAPSAT, Madagascar’s elite military unit that previously played a key role in bringing Rajoelina to power in 2009.

♦ Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the third production line of the HAL Tejas Mk1A Light Combat Aircraft and the second production line of the HAL HTT-40 trainer aircraft at the Nashik facility of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on 17 October 2025. ♦ He also flagged off the first Tejas Mk1A manufactured at the new line, hailing it as a major step toward strengthening India’s defence manufacturing capabilities. ♦ He highlighted the rapid expansion of the sector, with annual defence production rising from Rs.46,429 crore in 2014–15 to over Rs.1.5 lakh crore in 2024–25, while defence exports have soared to Rs.25,000 crore from less than Rs.1,000 crore a decade ago. ♦ The government has now set a target of achieving Rs.3 lakh crore in defence manufacturing and Rs.50,000 crore in exports by 2029. ♦ Established in 1964, HAL Nashik has produced more than 900 aircraft and overhauled 1,900, making it one of India’s most significant aerospace facilities. ♦ The division continues to provide full lifecycle support for Su-30MKI aircraft and plays a pivotal role in advancing the country’s defence manufacturing ambitions.

Torpedo Cum Missile Barge LSAM 25

♦ The Indian Navy inducted its 11th Ammunition Cum Torpedo Cum Missile Barge LSAM 25 (Yard 135) at an induction ceremony held at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai on 17 October 2025. ♦ The contract for the construction and delivery of eleven ACTCM Barges was signed with Suryadipta Projects Pvt Ltd, Thane, on March 5, 2021.  ♦ The MSME shipyard indigenously designed the barges in collaboration with an Indian ship design firm, with successful model testing conducted at the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory in Visakhapatnam to ensure seaworthiness. ♦ Ten such barges have already been delivered to the Navy, and the shipyard has also secured a new contract to construct four sullage barges, underlining the Navy’s continued focus on supporting MSMEs and indigenous shipbuilding. ♦ The induction of LSAM 25 will enhance the Navy’s logistical capabilities by enabling efficient transportation, embarkation, and disembarkation of ammunition and other critical supplies to naval platforms, both alongside jetties and at outer harbours.

ఆహారం, ఇల్లు, దుస్తులు, ఆరోగ్యం, విద్య లాంటి కనీస జీవన అవసరాలను సమకూర్చుకోలేని స్థితినే పేదరికం అంటారు. ఈ స్థితిలో ఉండి, కనీస స్థాయి జీవనాధార ఆదాయం లేనివారిని పేదలుగా పేర్కొంటారు. ఇదొక సాంఘిక, ఆర్థిక లక్షణం. ఉపాధి లేమి, అధిక జనాభా పేదరికానికి ప్రధాన కారణాలు. ఇది ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా అన్ని సమస్యలకు మూలకారణమై, అనేక ప్రభావాలకు దారితీస్తుంది. దారిద్య్రం వల్ల కలిగే సమస్యలపై అవగాహన కల్పించే లక్ష్యంతో ఏటా అక్టోబరు 17న ‘అంతర్జాతీయ పేదరిక నిర్మూలన దినోత్సవం’గా నిర్వహిస్తారు. దీనివల్ల ప్రభావితమైన వారికి సహాయసహకారాలు అందించడంతోపాటు పేదరికాన్ని రూపుమాపడానికి చేపట్టిన చర్యలపై విస్తృత ప్రచారం కల్పించడం ఈ రోజు ముఖ్య ఉద్దేశం. చారిత్రక నేపథ్యం ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా ఉన్న తీవ్ర పేదరికాన్ని నిర్మూలించాలనే ఉద్దేశంతో 1987, అక్టోబరు 17న పారిస్‌లోని ట్రోకాడోలో లక్ష మందికి పైగా ప్రజలతో ఒక సమావేశం జరిగింది. ఏటీడీ (ఆన్‌ టుగెదర్‌ ఇన్‌ డిగ్నిటీ) ఫోర్త్‌ వరల్డ్‌ వ్యవస్థాపక అధ్యక్షులు జోసెఫ్‌ రెసిన్స్కీఆధ్వర్యంలో ఇది జరిగింది. పేదరికం మానవ హక్కుల ఉల్లంఘనగా ఇందులో పేర్కొన్నారు.  ఈ సమావేశం జరిగిన గుర్తుగా ఏటా అక్టోబరు 17న ‘అంతర్జాతీయ పేదరిక నిర్మూలన దినోత్సవం’గా నిర్వహించాలని ఐక్యరాజ్యసమితి జనరల్‌ అసెంబ్లీ 1992, డిసెంబరు 22న తీర్మానించింది.  2025 నినాదం: Ending social and institutional maltreatment by ensuring respect and effective support for families
