Sourav Ganguly

♦ Former India captain Sourav Ganguly was re-appointed as the Chairperson of the ICC men’s cricket committee on 13 April 2025. ♦ VVS Laxman, also a former India international, returns as a member of the committee, which now includes Hamid Hassan, Desmond Haynes, Temba Bavuma, and Jonathan Trott. ♦ These appointments were approved following recommendations from the ICC’s Chief Executives Committee. ♦ Ganguly and Laxman have held these positions before, and their return brings continuity at a time when global cricket faces both challenges and opportunity. ♦ Ganguly, who led the Indian team with distinction for five years from 2000 to 2005, was first appointed as the committee’s chair in 2021. ♦ Ganguly has replaced compatriot Anil Kumble, who stepped down after serving a maximum of three, three-year terms. ♦ The ICC has launched a dedicated initiative to support displaced Afghan women cricketers. ♦ This move comes amid growing concern for Afghan women athletes, many of whom have lost access to training, funding, and international platforms due to political and social restrictions in their country.

National Open Air Range (NOAR) in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh

♦ India has successfully conducted its first trial of a high-powered laser weapon, MK-II(A), using directed energy to neutralise an aerial target. ♦ The test was conducted at the National Open Air Range (NOAR) in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, on 13 April 2025. ♦ India has joined the list of selected countries, including the US, China, and Russia, that have shown such a capability.  ♦ DRDO's Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences (CHESS), Hyderabad, developed the system along with several academic institutions and Indian industries. ♦ During the field test, the Mk-II(A) laser system engaged long-range fixed-wing drones, disrupted coordinated drone attacks, and disabled enemy surveillance devices such as sensors and antennae. ♦ The laser weapon’s ability to deliver precision, speed, and lethality in seconds makes it one of the most effective counter-drone systems developed so far.

International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF)

♦ The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) presented eminent Indian endocrinologist, Dr Ambrish Mithal, with the prestigious 2025 Committee of Scientific Advisors (CSA) Medal of Achievement. ♦ He got this for his exceptional contributions to osteoporosis research. ♦ The award was presented at the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis & Musculoskeletal Diseases (WCO-IOF-ESCEO 2025) in Rome, Italy. ♦ Dr Mithal was honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2015 in the field of medicine. ♦ CSA Medal of Achievement, honours individuals who have significantly advanced the field of osteoporosis through their original and outstanding scientific contributions, and whose work has helped to increase understanding and awareness of osteoporosis. ♦ Candidates are nominated by members of IOF’s CSA and the winner is selected by the chair of the CSA with the endorsement of the IOF executive committee.

India-Middle-East-Europe-Economic Corridor (IMEEC)

♦ India and Italy have decided to expand cooperation in areas of trade, defence, clean energy and high technology while vowing to work jointly in implementing the ambitious India-Middle-East-Europe-Economic Corridor (IMEEC). ♦ Ways to deepen India-Italy cooperation under the framework of Joint Strategic Action Plan (JSAP) 2025-29 figured prominently during talks between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Italian Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani.  ♦ The two ministers also exchanged views on global and regional developments of mutual interest with Jaishankar welcoming Italy's continued focus on the Indo-Pacific. ♦ The IMEEC initiative was firmed up on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Delhi. ♦ An agreement was signed by India, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the US and some other G20 partners for the corridor.

Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Abhyran

♦ The Madhya Pradesh government has declared a 258.64 sq km area in Sagar district as a wildlife sanctuary named after Dr B R Ambedkar. ♦ The announcement has come ahead of Ambedkar's 134th birth anniversary, celebrated on April 14. With this, the state, which is known for its tiger reserves, has 25 wildlife sanctuaries. ♦ Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Abhyran will spread across 258.64 sq km of reserved forest area of the North Sagar forest division, Tehsil Banda and Shahgarh forest in Sagar district.

National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM)

♦ The Government of India launched the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) in 2025 to establish a robust framework for self-reliance in the critical mineral sector. ♦ Under this mission, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has been tasked with conducting 1,200 exploration projects from 2024-25 to 2030-31. ♦ A committee formed by the Ministry of Mines in November 2022 identified 30 critical minerals, with 24 included in Part D of Schedule I of Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation Act, 1957 (MMDR Act, 1957). ♦ The inclusion of 24 critical minerals in Part D of the First Schedule of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act (MMDR Act) means that the Central Government now has the exclusive authority to auction mining leases and composite licenses for these specific minerals.

Padma Shri D. Ramaiah

♦ Padma Shri D. Ramaiah, popularly known as the Tree Man of Telangana, passed away in Reddy Palli, in Khammam on 12 April 2025. ♦ He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2017 for his exceptional contribution to environmental protection. ♦ He planted over one crore saplings during his lifetime and was deeply committed to raising awareness about the importance of trees. ♦ Recently, the Telangana government included his life story in the Class 6 curriculum to inspire young students.
