World Pulses Day

World Pulses Day is observed every year on February 10 to raise global awareness about the importance of pulses as a sustainable and nutritious food source.  In 2013, the United Nations adopted resolution which declared 2016 as the International Year of Pulses. The first celebration took place in 2019, and it has been observed annually ever since. ♦ 2025 theme: “Pulses: Bringing diversity to agrifood systems”.

European Free Trade Association (EFTA)

India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) have taken a significant step towards deeper economic collaboration with the inauguration of the India-EFTA Desk on 10 February 2025. EFTA comprising Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. This initiative follows the recently concluded India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), which positions EFTA as the first European bloc to formalize a trade pact with India. Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal hailed TEPA as a landmark agreement, emphasizing India’s growing role in global trade. ♦  The bloc committed an investment of USD 100 billion -- USD 50 billion within 10 years after the implementation of the agreement and another USD 50 billion in the next five years - which would facilitate the creation of 1 million direct jobs in India. ♦  The India-EFTA Desk will provide structured support to EFTA businesses looking to invest, expand, or establish operations in India. High-ranking dignitaries from all four EFTA nations attended the launch, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening economic ties.

India's first indigenous Automated Bio Medical Waste Treatment

♦Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launched India's first indigenous Automated Bio Medical Waste Treatment Plant named “Sṛjanam” at AIIMS New Delhi on 10 February 2025. This innovative, environmentally friendly technology, developed by CSIR-NIIST (National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology), offers a significant advancement in the sustainable management of biomedical waste. ♦ The “Sṛjanam” rig can disinfect pathogenic biomedical waste such as blood, urine, sputum, and laboratory disposables, without the use of costly and energy-intensive incinerators. Additionally, the rig imparts a pleasant fragrance to the otherwise foul-smelling toxic waste. With a daily capacity of 400 kg, the equipment is capable of handling 10 kg of degradable medical waste per day in the initial phase.

The fourth India-UK Energy Dialogue

♦  The fourth India-UK Energy Dialogue, co-chaired by Power Minister Manohar Lal and the UK’s Secretary for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, was held in New Delhi on 10 February 2025. The dialogue focused on reviewing the progress made in the energy sectors of both nations, including power and renewable energy.  ♦  The Ministers were pleased to announce the launch of Phase-2 of the India-UK bilateral Accelerating Smart Power and Renewable Energy in India, ASPIRE programme. This phase will aim to provide technical support to ensure round-the-clock power supply, expand renewable energy initiatives, and accelerate industrial energy efficiency and decarbonization.

The 15th edition of Aero India 2025

♦ Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the 15th edition of Aero India 2025 at Yelahanka Air Force Station, Bengaluru on 10 February 2025. This is Asia’s largest aerospace and defense exhibition. The five-day event concludes on February 14. It follows the theme ‘The Runway to a Billion Opportunities’ and will       showcase India's aerial prowess, indigenous defense innovations, and global aerospace advancements. ♦ The event features participation from over 900 exhibitors, including 150 foreign companies, making it the biggest edition to date.

"Cyclone 2025"

♦ The third edition of India and Egypt joint military exercise "Cyclone 2025" commenced at the Mahajan Field Firing Range in Rajasthan on 10 February 2025. The 14-day exercise concludes on February 23. It aims to enhance defence cooperation between India and Egypt by sharing professional skills and improving interoperability of special forces in desert environments.  ♦ Together we train, together we excel,” is the motto of Cyclone 2025.
