వేవ్స్‌ 2025

ప్రధానమంత్రి నరేంద్ర మోదీ 2025, మే 1న ముంబయిలోని జియో వరల్డ్‌ కన్వెన్షన్‌ సెంటరులో ‘వరల్డ్‌ ఆడియో విజువల్‌ అండ్‌ ఎంటర్‌టైన్‌మెంట్‌ సమ్మిట్‌’ (వేవ్స్‌ 2025) ప్రారంభించారు. ఈ సదన్సు దేశంలో జరగడం ఇదే మొదటిసారి. భారత్‌లో ‘ఆరెంజ్‌ ఎకానమీ’ (సృజనాత్మక ఆర్థికవ్యవస్థ) పరిఢవిల్లుతోందని మోదీ తెలిపారు. ప్రపంచం కొత్తదనం కోరుకొంటున్న ఈ తరుణంలో ‘‘భారత్‌లో సృష్టిద్దాం, జగతికి అందిద్దాం’’ నినాదంతో మనం ముందడుగు వేయడానికి ఇదే సరైన తరుణమని చెప్పారు. నాలుగు రోజుల పాటు జరిగే ఈ సదస్సు మే 4న ముగుస్తుంది.

International Labour Day

♦ International Labour Day (International Workers Day) is observed every year on May 1 to honour the workers who fought for their rights, including better working conditions and fairer working hours. ♦ International Labour Day comes from the American labour movement of the late 19th century. ♦ A nationwide strike for an eight-hour workday that started in 1886 was commemorated on May 1st.   ♦ In India, Labour Day, which is marked on May 1, was observed in Chennai in 1923 and serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of upholding social justice and safeguarding the rights of workers.

Centre signed a Letter of Agreement (LoA)

♦ The Centre signed a Letter of Agreement (LoA) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to improve waste pickers’ access to finance and relevant technologies and ensure a safer and more sustainable work environment on 1 May 2025. ♦ The agreement was exchanged between Angela Lusigi, UNDP’s Resident Representative in India and Amit Yadav, Secretary, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment (DoSJE). ♦ The collaboration would unravel as part of government’s ongoing efforts under the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) Scheme, which added waste pickers as a key focus group in 2024. ♦ Under the agreement, the UNDP will provide financial assistance to set up state project management units (PMUs) across multiple states to ensure better coordination between central and state authorities and streamline implementation.

Goods and Services Tax (GST)

♦ Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection rose 12.6 percent to an all-time high of about Rs 2.37 lakh crore in April 2025 compared to the same month last year. ♦ The GST mop-up was Rs 2.10 lakh crore in April 2024, the second highest collection ever since the roll-out of the indirect tax regime on July 1, 2017. In March 2025, the collection was Rs 1.96 lakh crore. ♦ GST revenue from domestic transactions rose 10.7 percent to about Rs.1.9 lakh crore, while revenue from imported goods was up 20.8 percent to Rs.46,913 crore. ♦ Refunds issuance rose 48.3 per cent to Rs.27,341 crore during April. ♦ After adjusting refunds, net GST collection rose 9.1 percent to over Rs.2.09 lakh crore in April.

economic partnership agreement

♦ The United States and Ukraine have signed an “economic partnership agreement” that will give Washington access to Kyiv’s mineral resources in exchange for establishing an investment fund in Ukraine. ♦ The deal giving the United States preferential access to new Ukrainian minerals as a milestone. ♦ Ukraine holds some five percent of the world's mineral resources and rare earths, according to various estimates. Ukraine also has around 20 percent of the world's graphite, an essential material for electric batteries, according to France's Bureau of Geological and Mining Research, and is a ♦ major producer of manganese and titanium. ♦ Ukraine has agreed to the minerals deal as a way to secure long-term US investment, as Trump has drastically scaled back US security commitments around the world. ♦ The two countries will establish a joint Reconstruction Investment Fund, with each side having equal voting rights. The fund's profits will be invested exclusively in Ukraine, which will not be asked to pay back any "debt" for billions of dollars in US support since Russia's February 2022 invasion.

Meeting of the India-Egypt

♦ The 4th Meeting of the India-Egypt Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism was held in Cairo. ♦ The two delegations were led by Ambassador K. D. Dewal, Joint Secretary (Counter Terrorism), Ministry of External Affairs of India and Ambassador Walid Al-Fiqi, Director of the Department of Counter Terrorism, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt and included representatives of various agencies from both countries. ♦ India and Egypt have agreed to intensify their collaboration in combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. ♦ India and Egypt agreed to deepen bilateral collaboration in areas such as anti-money laundering, drug trafficking, and organized crime. ♦ Additionally, they committed to strengthening joint efforts in training and capacity building, cybersecurity, the use of artificial intelligence for counter-terrorism, and the exchange of best practices and information. ♦ The two nations also discussed enhancing multilateral cooperation in counter-terrorism through forums such as the United Nations, BRICS, the Global Counter Terrorism Forum (GCTF), and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

♦ Senior bureaucrat Arvind Shrivastava took charge as the Secretary of the Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance on 1 May 2025. ♦ He is a 1994-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Karnataka cadre. ♦ He served as Joint Secretary and then Additional Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office. ♦ His appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on April 18, 2025.

♦ Prime Minister Narendra Modi  inaugurated World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai on 1 May 2025. ♦ He released commemorative postage stamps in honour of five legendary figures from Indian cinema — filmmaker Guru Dutt, actress P. Bhanumathi, director Raj Khosla, filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak, and music composer Salil Chowdhury, at the summit. ♦ WAVES 2025 is structured around four core pillars: Broadcasting & Infotainment, AVGC-XR (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality), Digital Media & Innovation, and Films. ♦ The four-day global summit, hosted by the Government of India, brings together leading figures from the fields of media, technology, and entertainment, highlighting the country’s growing stature in the global creative economy. ♦ Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the launch of the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) in Mumbai during the WAVES 2025 event, positioning it as a national-level initiative to boost animation, gaming, and digital arts in India. ♦ The institute, envisioned as a national hub for Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC), has already commenced operations.
