Sanjiv Khanna

♦ Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna retired on 13 May 2025. He served as the 51st Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. ♦ Justice Khanna was elevated to the top court in January 18, 2019, was appointed as the CJI on November 11, 2024. ♦ As of May 13, he is the Patron-in-Chief, National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and Chairperson, National Judicial Academy, Bhopal (NJA). ♦ Justice Khanna has also been the Chairman, Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC) from 17th June, 2023 till 25th December, 2023 and Executive Chairman, NALSA from 26th December, 2023 till 10th November, 2024. ♦ On June 24, 2005, Justice Khanna was elevated as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Delhi and was made a Permanent Judge on 20th February, 2006.

Virat Kohli

♦ Virat Kohli has announced his retirement from Test Cricket on 12 May 2025. ♦ He amassed 9230 runs in 123 matches at an average of 46.85 in the game’s longest format. ♦ In his 14-year Test career, Kohli went on to become the fourth-highest run-getter for India, behind Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar. ♦ Kohli made his Test debut against the West Indies in 2011, eventually becoming the skipper three years later. ♦ He led the country in 68 Tests, most by an Indian, losing just 17 of them. ♦ With a win percentage of 58.82 percent, which includes 40 wins and 11 draws, the batter remains India’s most successful red-ball captain.  ♦ Under Kohli’s captaincy, India won a series in Australia for the first time in 2019. ♦ His last Test was also in Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, earlier this year, which the hosts won by six wickets, ending the series 3-1 in their favour. ♦ Kohli had already retired from T20 Internationals after India won the 2024 T20 World Cup.

♦ A fourth round of talks between the US and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear programme concluded in the Omani capital, Muscat. ♦ The US has insisted that Iran must scrap its uranium enrichment to prevent the country from developing nuclear weapons, but Tehran denies it has any such aim and again stressed it does not intend to give up the programme. ♦ Donald Trump pulled out of a previous nuclear agreement between Iran and five other world powers in 2018. ♦ Two previous rounds of the negotiations were held in Muscat, with one taking place in the Omani embassy in Rome.

India has extended crucial financial support to the Maldives

♦ India has extended crucial financial support to the Maldives through the rollover of the USD 50 million Treasury Bill for one more year. ♦ At the request of the Maldivian government, the State Bank of India (SBI) has subscribed, for one more year, a USD 50 million Government Treasury Bill issued by the Ministry of Finance of Maldives. ♦ Since March 2019, the Indian government has been facilitating subscription of several such Treasury Bills by the SBI and rolling them over, annually, interest-free to the Government of Maldives.

National Technology Day

♦ National Technology Day is observed every year on May 11 to celebrate the achievements of engineers, researchers and scientists in the field of science and technology. ♦ The history of National Technology Day dates back to 1998, when India, as a part of Operation Shakti, conducted the Nuclear Missile Test at the Indian Army’s Pokhran range on May 11. ♦ Following the successful testing, India became only the sixth country in the world to possess nuclear weapons. ♦ The nuclear tests were conducted under the leadership of then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who later declared May 11 as National Technology Day to celebrate the achievement.
