National Safe Motherhood Day

♦ National Safe Motherhood Day is observed every year on 11 April. ♦ The day aims to raise awareness about maternal health — before, during and after pregnancy. It also highlights the importance of safe childbirth, particularly in rural areas. ♦ This day was established in 2003 by the White Ribbon Alliance India (WRAI). ♦ The date marks the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi, wife of Mahatma Gandhi, who dedicated her life to the welfare of women and children. ♦ 2025 theme:  “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures."

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

♦ India will provide a funding support of  990,000 dollar to Sierra Leone for the project Enabling Economic Independence For Specially Abled Persons In Sierra Leone (Persons With Disabilities).   ♦ The initiative, titled “Enabling Economic Independence for Specially Abled Persons in Sierra Leone”, is supported under the India-UN Development Partnership Fund and executed in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). ♦ The project aligns with Sierra Leone’s national priorities and underscores India’s commitment to inclusive development, sustainability, and South-South cooperation.

University Grants Commission (UGC)

♦ The Ministry of Education has given an additional charge to Vineet Joshi as the chairperson of the University Grants Commission (UGC) on 11 April 2025. ♦ Currently, he is Secretary of the Department of Higher Education. ♦ This decision has been taken following the retirement of the previous UGC chairman, Prof Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar. ♦ Joshi will discharge his duties as UGC chairperson till a full-time appointment is made or until further orders are issued. ♦ Prof Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar had taken charge as UGC Chairman in February 2022. ♦ His tenure in the UGC was marked by landmark initiatives, including the introduction of the Central University Entrance Test (CUET) for both undergraduate and postgraduate admissions. ♦ He was also at the helm of implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, helping integrate its key recommendations into university functioning and structure.

International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF)

♦ In the first leg of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup 2025 at Buenos Aires, Argentina, India finished second in the standings behind China. ♦ India won a total of 8 medals, including 4 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze. ♦ On the last day of the competition (11 April 2025), the Indian pair of Saurabh Chaudhary and Suruchi Singh won the Bronze, beating compatriots Manu Bhaker and Ravinder Singh by 16-8. ♦ Other medal winners for India include Sift Kaur Samra, Rudrankksh Patil, Suruchi Singh, Vijayveer Sidhu, Esha Singh, Chain Singh and the duo of Arya Borse and Rudrankksh Patil.

Long Range Glide Bomb (LRGB)

♦ The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the Release Trials of the Long Range Glide Bomb (LRGB) 'Gaurav' from the SU-30 MKI aircraft, the Defence Ministry said on 11 April 2025. ♦ ‘Gaurav’ is a 1,000 kg class glide bomb, designed and developed indigenously by Research Centre Imarat, Armament Research and Development Establishment and Integrated Test Range, Chandipur.

Automotive Industry: Powering India’s Participation in Global Value Chains

♦ NITI Aayog Vice Chairman, Suman Bery launched a report titled “Automotive Industry: Powering India’s Participation in Global Value Chains” on 11 April 2025. ♦ This report offers an extensive analysis of India’s automotive sector, highlighting both opportunities and challenges, and outlining a pathway for positioning India as a key player in global automotive markets. Highlights: ♦ In 2023, global automobile production reached approximately 94 million units. ♦ The global automotive components market was valued at USD 2 trillion, with the export share reaching approximately USD 700 billion. ♦ India has emerged as the fourth-largest global producer after China, USA and Japan, with an annual production of nearly 6 million vehicles. ♦ NITI Aayog's vision for India’s automotive sector by 2030 is ambitious yet achievable. ♦ The report envisions the country’s automotive component production growing to $145 billion, with exports tripling from $20 billion to $60 billion. ♦ This growth would lead to a trade surplus of approximately $25 billion and a significant increase in India’s share of the global automotive value chain, from 3% to 8%.

♦The union government launched a dedicated ‘Global Tariff and Trade Helpdesk’ to assist traders navigate emerging trade issues on 11 April 2025. ♦ The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has operationalised this helpdesk. ♦ The helpdesk would look into issues relating to import and export challenges, import surges or dumping, EXIM Clearance, logistics or supply chain challenges, financial or banking issues, and regulatory or compliance issues. ♦ They can send email on dgftedi@nic.in with the subject header: ‘Global Tariff and Trade Helpdesk’, or can also call the Toll-Free No at 1800-111-550.

తెలంగాణ రాష్ట్ర మానవ హక్కుల కమిషన్‌ (ఎస్‌హెచ్‌ఆర్‌సీ) ఛైర్మన్‌గా హైకోర్టు విశ్రాంత న్యాయమూర్తి జస్టిస్‌ షమీమ్‌ అక్తర్‌ను ప్రభుత్వం 2025, ఏప్రిల్‌ 11న నియమించింది. ఎస్‌హెచ్‌ఆర్‌సీ సభ్యులుగా జిల్లా మాజీ జడ్జి ఎస్‌.ప్రవీణ, విశ్రాంత ఐఏఎస్‌ అధికారి కిశోర్‌ నియమితులయ్యారు. జస్టిస్‌ షమీమ్‌ అక్తర్‌ 1961 జనవరి 1న నల్గొండలో జన్మించారు.
