The National Farmers Day

♦ The National Farmers Day also known as Kisan Diwas is observed on December 23, every year to mark the birth anniversary of the fifth Prime Minister Choudhary Charan Singh. He was born on December 23, 1902. ♦ Charan Singh served as the Prime Minister of India from 1979 to 1980. During his tenure, he introduced various welfare initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of farmers. In recognition of his significant contributions, the Government of India declared December 23 as National Farmers' Day in 2001.

High - Level Advisory Committee

♦ On 23 December 2025, the union government notified the constitution of a high-level Advisory Committee to study discrimination faced by transgender persons and recommend a viable equal opportunity policy. It formed with directions issued by the Supreme Court on 2025 October 17. ♦ According to the notification issued by the Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice, the advisory body will be chaired by Justice (Retd.) Asha Menon, former judge of the Delhi High Court. The panel includes transgender rights activists, legal scholars, public health experts and policy researchers, along with senior government officials as ex-officio members. ♦ The members named in the government order include Akkai Padmashali, Grace Banu, Vyjayanti Vasanta Mogli, Sourav Mandal of Jindal Global Law School, Nithya Rajshekhar of the Centre for Law and Policy Research, and Air Cmde (Retd.) Sanjay Sharma, CEO of the Association for Transgender Health in India. Senior advocate Jayna Kothari has been appointed as amicus curiae, while the Joint Secretary, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, will act as the convener. ♦ Secretaries of key ministries — including Social Justice and Empowerment, Women and Child Development, Health and Family Welfare, and Education — will serve as ex-officio members with advisory jurisdiction.

MP Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar

♦ The Union Government has appointed former Telugu Desam MP Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar as an additional solicitor general (ASG) in the Supreme Court. He served as Rajya Sabha member as a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) nominee from 2018 to 2024.  ♦ He will serve as ASG for three years. A native of Avanigadda in Krishna district, Ravindra Kumar completed his law degree from AC College of Law in Guntur. He served as Andhra Pradesh's advocate in the Supreme Court for several years. ♦ ASGI is one of the eminent legal offices in the judicial system. The incumbent represented the central government before the Supreme Court in crucial constitutional and policy-related matters.

Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025

♦ President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025 on 24 eminent scientists and innovators at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on December 23. The prestigious Rashtriya Vigyan Ratna Puraskar for lifetime achievement was awarded posthumously to renowned astrophysicist Jayant Vishnu Narlikar, honouring his seminal work in cosmology and science communication.  ♦ One of the highlights of the ceremony was the conferment of the Rashtriya Vigyan Team Puraskar 2025 on the CSIR-Aroma Mission, the science-led initiative credited with powering India’s widely discussed Purple Revolution through lavender-based agri-entrepreneurship. ♦ The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar, instituted by the government as part of a restructured national science awards framework, aims to acknowledge excellence across the full spectrum of scientific work—ranging from lifetime achievement and distinguished contributions to young scientist recognition and team-based innovation. This year’s ceremony marked the second edition of the awards. ♦ Under the Vigyan Shri category, which recognises distinguished contributions in specific disciplines, awards were conferred on leading scientists from fields including agriculture, atomic energy, biological sciences, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, mathematics, space science, and technology. ♦ The Vigyan Yuva–Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, meant for scientists below the age of 45, recognised emerging researchers for innovative work across physics, agriculture, biological sciences, chemistry, earth science, engineering, medicine, space science, and technology.

♦ On 23 December 2025, India announced a USD 450 million reconstruction assistance package to assist in the reconstruction of areas affected by Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar announced this while addressing the media in Colombo.  ♦ He stated that the package comprises a 350 million concessionary line of credit and 100 million dollars in grants, aimed at supporting the rebuilding of cyclone-affected regions of the nation.  ♦ He added that under Operation Sagar Bandhu, India delivered around 11 hundred tonnes of relief material and over 14.5 tonnes of medicines and medical equipment to the neighbouring country.

Vinod Kumar Shukla

♦ Eminent Hindi writer and Jnanpith Award winner Vinod Kumar Shukla passed away on 23 December 2025 at the age of 89. He was born on January 1, 1937, in Rajnandgaon, in present-day Chhattisgarh. ♦ His most well-known novel, Naukar Ki Kameez, earned wide recognition and was later adapted into a film by filmmaker Mani Kaul. Another notable work, Deewar Mein Ek Khidki Rehti Thi, further established his reputation as a writer of quiet depth and philosophical insight. ♦ In 2023, he was awarded the Jnanpith Award, India’s highest literary honour, a recognition widely viewed as long overdue.

వినోద్‌కుమార్‌ కన్నుమూత

ప్రముఖ హిందీ రచయిత, జ్ఞాన్‌పీఠ్‌ అవార్డు గ్రహీత వినోద్‌కుమార్‌ శుక్లా (88) 2025, డిసెంబరు 23న రాయ్‌పుర్‌లో మరణించారు. శుక్లా 1937 జనవరి 1న ప్రస్తుత ఛత్తీస్‌గఢ్‌లోని రాజ్‌నంద్‌గావ్‌లో జన్మించారు. హిందీ సాహిత్యంలో ఆయనకు ప్రత్యేక స్థానం ఉంది. నౌకర్‌ కీ కమీజ్, ఖిలేగా తో దేఖేంగే, దీవార్‌ మే ఏక్‌ ఖిర్కీ రహతీ థీ, ఏక్‌ చుప్పీ జగాహ్‌ వంటి నవలలను రచించి అందరి ప్రశంసలు పొందారు.   ‘దీవార్‌ మే ఏక్‌ ఖిర్కీ రహతీ థీ’కిగాను 1999లో సాహిత్య అకాడమీ అవార్డును ఆయన పొందారు.

ట్రాన్స్‌జెండర్లకు అన్ని రంగాల్లో సమాన అవకాశాలు కల్పించే అంశంపై పరిశీలించేందుకు కేంద్ర సామాజిక న్యాయం, సాధికార మంత్రిత్వశాఖ దిల్లీ హైకోర్టు మాజీ న్యాయమూర్తి జస్టిస్‌ ఆశామేనన్‌ ఆధ్వర్యంలో ఏడుగురు సభ్యులతో కూడిన సలహా కమిటీని ఏర్పాటు చేసింది. ఇందులో తెలంగాణకు చెందిన ట్రాన్స్‌జెండర్‌ హక్కుల పోరాట కార్యకర్త వైజయంతి వసంత మోంగ్లీకి స్థానం కల్పించింది. అలాగే కర్ణాటకకు చెందిన అక్కై పద్మశాలి, గ్రేస్‌బాను, జిందాల్‌ గ్లోబల్‌ లా స్కూల్‌ అసోసియేట్‌ ప్రొఫెసర్‌ సౌరవ్‌ మండల్, సెంటర్‌ ఫర్‌ లా అండ్‌ పాలసీ రీసెర్చ్‌ సీనియర్‌ రీసెర్చ్‌ అసోసియేట్‌ నిత్యారాజశేఖర్, అసోసియేషన్‌ ఫర్‌ ట్రాన్స్‌జెండర్‌ హెల్త్‌ ఇన్‌ ఇండియా సీఈఓ డాక్టర్‌ సంజయ్‌ శర్మ కమిటీ సభ్యులుగా నియమితులయ్యారు.  ట్రాన్స్‌జెండర్‌ వ్యక్తులకు విద్య, ఉద్యోగాలు, ఇతర విషయాల్లో సమాన అవకాశాలు కల్పించేందుకు విధాన రూపకల్పన చేయాలంటూ సుప్రీంకోర్టు 2025 అక్టోబరు 17న జారీచేసిన తీర్పు మేరకు ఈ కమిటీ ఏర్పడింది.
