Dr S Jaishankar

♦ External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar chaired the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) informal Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New York on 28 September 2024. ♦ The meeting was held to prepare for the BIMSTEC Leaders’ Summit. ♦ Jaishankar highlighted that the meeting focused on improving physical, maritime, and digital connectivity across the region, along with exploring opportunities for capacity building, skill development, and improving people-to-people ties. ♦ He noted that the development of BIMSTEC Centres of Excellence is a collective resolve and that the meeting reaffirmed India’s commitment to wider engagement with BIMSTEC in line with Neighbourhood First, Vision SAGAR, and Act East Policy.

Gunners Day

♦ The Indian Army is celebrated the 198th Gunners Day on 28 September 2024. ♦ The day is observed to commemorate the raising of the first Indian Artillery Unit, namely, 5 (Bombay) Mountain Battery in 1827.  ♦ The Battle of Adoni in 1368 is the first known instance of artillery in India. ♦ The Bahmani kings of the Deccan, led by Mohammed Shah Bahmani, employed a train of artillery to subdue the Vijay Nagar king. ♦ On September 28, 1827, the 8th Company of the Golandaz Battalion, Bombay Foot Artillery, was established as 5 (Bombay) Mountain Battery. At present, it is a component of the 57 Field Regiment. Consequently, September 28 is designated as "Gunners Day."  ♦ The Regiment of Artillery, one of the largest arms of the Indian Army, proved its mettle also during the operations of 1947-48, 1962, 1965, 1971, and 1999. ♦ After the Kargil conflict, artillery has acquired further prominence, and with its vast array of weapons, it is acknowledged as a significant ‘Arm of Decision’.

India signed 12 Memorandam of Understanding (MoUs)

♦ India signed 12 Memorandam of Understanding (MoUs) for High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) in Nepal on  28 September 2024. ♦ These projects, supported by a grant from the Government of India, span across sectors such as education, health, agriculture, drinking water, and culture. ♦ The total estimated cost for these initiatives is NRs. 474 million (Rs.29.6 crores). ♦ The 12 projects include the construction of school buildings in Okhaldhunga, Dailekh, Saptari, Morang, Chitwan, and Sunsari. Additionally, they involve the construction of the Arun Multipurpose Foundation Building in Bhojpur, a water supply project in Solukhumbu, a building for the Agriculture Promotion Centre in Bajura, a health post-birthing centre in Dhading, and an operation theatre building for the Rapti Eye Hospital in Dang.  ♦ Since 2003, India has undertaken over 563 High Impact Development Projects in Nepal, with 490 already completed.

Gulveer Singh

♦ India’s Gulveer Singh won the gold medal in the men’s 5,000 meters race at the World Athletics Continental Tour in Japan on 28 September 2024. ♦ He create a new national record with a time of 13 minutes and 11.82 seconds. ♦ This broke his own previous record of 13 minutes and 18.92 seconds, which he had set earlier this year (2024). ♦ Japan’s Mebuki Suzuki took second place with a personal best of 13:13.80. Another Japanese runner, Kotaro Shinohara, took third place with a time of 13:15.70. ♦ In March 2024, Gulveer broke the men’s 10,000m record at the Ten Track Meet in California. ♦ He crossed the finish line in 27 minutes and 41.81 seconds, and in doing so, he improved on Surender Singh’s old mark of 28 minutes and 02.89 seconds, set nearly 16 years ago in 2008.
