♦ Former world billiards champion Manoj Kothari died at the age of 67 in Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu on 5 January 2026. He had won the world billiards championship title back in 1990. He also secured the State Champion title a total of 16 times during his career.  ♦ In 2005, he was conferred with the Dhyan Chand Award, India’s highest award for lifetime achievement in sports and games. He was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India in 2025.

Delhi Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

♦ Delhi Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Reserve Bank of India, bringing the national capital under the RBI’s full banking, cash management and debt framework for the first time. The MoU enables the RBI to function as the banker, debt manager, and financial agent of the Government of Delhi.  ♦ The MoU will facilitate market borrowings through State Development Loans, automatic investment of surplus cash, professional cash management, and access to low-cost liquidity facilities.

Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Samudra Pratap

♦ Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commissioned Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Samudra Pratap on 5 January 2026. This is India’s first indigenously designed Pollution Control Vessel, marking a major milestone in the country’s drive towards self-reliance in shipbuilding and maritime capability development. Built by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), the vessel was commissioned in Goa. ♦ With over 60 percent indigenous content, Samudra Pratap is the largest ship in the Indian Coast Guard’s (ICG) fleet and the first of two pollution control vessels being constructed by GSL. The ship significantly enhances India’s capability in marine pollution response, fire-fighting, maritime safety and environmental protection, while also strengthening coastal patrol and long-range surveillance across the country’s maritime zones. ♦ Named Samudra Pratap – meaning “Majesty of the Seas” – the vessel has a displacement of 4,170 tonnes, a length of 114.5 metres and a top speed exceeding 22 knots. Powered by indigenously developed propulsion systems, it has an endurance of 6,000 nautical miles.

♦ India’s pharmaceutical exports reached $30.47 billion in FY 2024–25, registering a year-on-year growth of 9.4 percent, and are on track to surpass last year’s performance in the current financial year, the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (PHARMEXCIL) informed Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal on 5 January 2026.  ♦ PHARMEXCIL highlighted that India is the world’s third-largest pharmaceutical producer by volume and a trusted supplier of affordable, quality-assured medicines to more than 150 countries,a underscoring the sector’s potential for sustained export-led growth.

కార్బన్‌ డైఆక్సైడ్‌తో మిథనాల్‌ ఇంధనం ఉత్పత్తి

కార్బన్‌ డైఆక్సైడ్‌ను మిథనాల్‌ ఇంధనంగా మార్చేందుకు ఉపయోగపడే ఫొటోకెటలిటిక్‌ పదార్థాన్ని గువాహటిలోని ఐఐటీ పరిశోధకులు అభివృద్ధి చేశారు. ఇది సూర్యకాంతి సాయంతో ఈ చర్య జరుపుతుంది. పర్యావరణానికి మరింత హాని జరగకుండా.. పెరుగుతున్న ఇంధన అవసరాలను తీర్చేందుకు ఇది మెరుగైన ఆవిష్కరణ అవుతుందని శాస్త్రవేత్తలు తెలిపారు. పెట్రోలియం ఆధారిత ఇంధనాలపై ఆధారపడటం వల్ల కార్బన్‌ డైఆక్సైడ్‌ ఉద్గారాలు పెరుగుతున్నాయి. దీనివల్ల పర్యావరణంపై ఒత్తిడి పడటంతోపాటు భూతాపం పెరుగుతోంది. ఈ సమస్య పరిష్కారానికి శాస్త్రవేత్తలు ఫొటోకెటలిటిక్‌ విధానాల రూపకల్పనపై పనిచేస్తున్నారు. అయితే దీనిలో కొన్ని ఇబ్బందులు ఉన్నాయి. ఇది వేగంగా శక్తిని కోల్పోతుంది. ఇంధన ఉత్పత్తి కూడా తక్కువే. ఈ సమస్యలకు గట్టి విరుగుడు ఇప్పటివరకూ కనుగొనలేదు. ఈ నేపథ్యంలో గువాహటిలోని ఐఐటీ గ్రాఫైటిక్‌ కార్బన్‌ నైట్రైడ్‌ను ఫ్యూ లేయర్‌ గ్రాఫీన్‌తో కలిపారు. అత్యంత పలుచగా ఉండే ఈ గ్రాఫీన్‌ పదార్థం.. శక్తి నష్టాన్ని తగ్గించింది. సూర్యకాంతి సమక్షంలో ఇది సాధ్యమైంది. ఇది ఉత్ప్రేరకాన్ని దీర్ఘకాలం క్రియాశీలంగా ఉండేలా చేసింది.

‘సముద్ర ప్రతాప్‌’

‘సముద్ర ప్రతాప్‌’ నౌకను రక్షణశాఖ మంత్రి రాజ్‌నాథ్‌ సింగ్‌ జలప్రవేశం చేయించారు. గోవా షిప్‌యార్డ్‌లో 2026, జనవరి 5న ఈ కార్యక్రమం జరిగింది. కాలుష్య నియంత్రణకు ఉపయోగపడేలా రూ.2,500 కోట్లతో గోవా షిప్‌యార్డ్‌ లిమిటెడ్‌ ఈ నౌకను నిర్మించింది. సముద్ర జలాల్లో కాలుష్యాన్ని.. ముఖ్యంగా చమురు వ్యర్థాలను నిర్మూలించి జలచరాలను కాపాడేందుకు దోహదపడే అధునాతన సాంకేతికత ఇందులో ఉంది.
