♦ The Reporters Without Borders (RSF) released the World Press Freedom Index 2025. ♦ A total of 180 countries are present in this index. ♦ Parameswaran Iyer was temporarily entrusted with the responsibility of being India's nominee director on the board of International Monetary Fund (IMF) on 5 May 2025. ♦ Currently he is the Executive Director at the World Bank. ♦ Iyer's nomination was necessitated to fill a vacancy created with the termination of services of K V Subramanian as the executive director at the IMF, six months ahead of his three-year tenure.  ♦ The government's decision assumes significance as the IMF Executive Board will meet on May 9, to take a call on a new USD 1.3 billion loan under a climate resilience loan programme, along with the first review of the ongoing USD 7 billion bailout package for Pakistan.

♦ Indian Navy and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) have successfully undertaken combat firing of the indigenously designed and developed Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM) on 5 May 2025.  ♦ MIGM system is an advanced underwater naval mine and it is designed to enhance the Indian Navy’s capabilities against modern stealth ships and submarines. ♦ Multi Influence Ground Mine is equipped with multiple sensors for recording of influences like acoustic, magnetic, pressure generated by marine vessels. ♦ It has a built-in electronics system that comprises data acquisition electronics with ARM processors along with peripheral devices for processing the data and to generate commands to initiate the desired course of actions.

Indian researchers have developed a novel

♦ Indian researchers have developed a novel, cost-effective, metal-free catalyst that can efficiently produce hydrogen fuel by harvesting mechanical energy. ♦ This innovation represents a major breakthrough in green hydrogen technology and offers a promising path toward cleaner alternatives to fossil fuels. ♦ Unlike traditional catalysts that rely heavily on metal-based ferroelectric materials, the new COF system is entirely organic and metal-free. ♦ It is composed of tris(4-aminophenyl)amine (TAPA) as the donor molecule and pyromellitic dianhydride (PDA) as the acceptor. ♦ These materials form imide linkages that give rise to a unique structural phenomenon known as ferrielectric (FiE) ordering.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan

♦ Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that India has become the first country in the world to develop genome-edited rice varieties. ♦ Developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the new rice varieties — DRR Rice 100 (Kamala) and Pusa DST Rice 1 — are expected to significantly increase crop yields, improve climate resilience, and reduce water usage. ♦ Developed using CRISPR-Cas-based genome editing technology, these rice varieties involve no foreign DNA insertion and have been approved under India’s biosafety guidelines for general crops under SDN 1 and SDN 2 categories. ♦ They mark a groundbreaking step toward sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture. ♦ He also introduced the “Minus 5 and Plus 10” formula, aimed at optimizing land use.  ♦ The development of these varieties began in 2018 under the National Agricultural Science Fund, with a focus on improving two popular rice varieties—Samba Mahsuri and MTU 1010. ♦ The result was two advanced rice types that promise a 19% increase in yield, a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and the conservation of 7,500 million cubic meters of irrigation water.
