World Wildlife Day

♦ World Wildlife Day is celebrated every year on March 3 to spread awareness about the importance of flora and fauna. This day was established by the United Nations in 2013 after Thailand proposed to dedicate a day to raise awareness about wildlife conservation. On December 20, 2013, the UN General Assembly officially declared March 3 as World Wildlife Day with the first celebration taking place in 2014. ♦ This date was chosen because, in 1973, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was signed on the same day. CITES is a global agreement to ensure that international wildlife trade does not threaten the survival of animal and plant species. ♦ 2025 theme: “Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet."

India and Nepal signed a Memorandum of Understanding

♦ India and Nepal signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi to enhance cooperation in the Water Sanitation, Hygiene sector, and waste management on 3 March 2025. The primary agenda of the agreement is to promote collaboration between the two nations and strengthen intergovernmental cooperation in the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) sector, ensuring better access to clean drinking water and sanitation for their populations.  ♦ Speaking at the event, Minister of Jal Shakti, C.R. Patil, emphasized that the MoU reflects the shared commitment of both countries towards public health, sustainability, and regional cooperation.

'Population Status of River Dolphin in India'

♦ Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a report titled 'Population Status of River Dolphin in India' on 3 March 2025. This is the first-ever riverine dolphin estimation conducted in the country, which estimated a total of 6,327 dolphins.  ♦ This pioneering effort involved surveying 28 rivers across eight states, with 3,150 man-days dedicated to covering over 8,500 kilometres.  ♦ Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of dolphins at 2,397, followed by Bihar 2,220, West Bengal 815, Assam 635, Jharkhand 162, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh 95, and Punjab 3, the report said.

Women’s Role in India’s Financial Growth Story”

♦ NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam unveiled a report titled “From Borrowers to Builders: Women’s Role in India’s Financial Growth Story” on 3 March 2025. It highlights a significant rise in financial awareness among women, with 27 million actively monitoring their credit as of December 2024—a sharp 42 percent increase from the previous year (2023). ♦ The report, jointly published by TransUnion CIBIL, the Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP) of NITI Aayog, and MicroSave Consulting (MSC), underscores a positive trend in women’s participation in the financial ecosystem. ♦ Women’s share in the total self-monitoring credit base rose to 19.43 percent in December 2024, up from 17.89 percent in 2023. Notably, non-metro regions outpaced metro areas in self-monitoring growth, with a 48 percent rise compared to 30 percent in urban centers. ♦ Geographically, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana accounted for 49 percent of self-monitoring women, with the southern region leading at 10.2 million. Northern and central states, including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, recorded the highest compounded annual growth rates (CAGR) in active women borrowers over the last five years. ♦ The report also highlights a shift in borrowing patterns. Since 2019, women’s share in business loan origination has increased by 14 percent, while their share in gold loans has grown by 6 percent. By December 2024, women are projected to account for 35 percent of business borrowers, reinforcing their role as key contributors to India’s economic growth.

Rajnath Singh held a meeting with Princess Astrid of Belgium

♦ Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a meeting with Princess Astrid of Belgium and the Defence Minister Theo Francken in New Delhi on 3 MArch 2025. They discussed the possibility of defence engagements in the Indo-Pacific, particularly in maritime domain. They also discussed ways and means to enhance defence industrial cooperation between the two countries.  ♦ Both countries agreed to explore an institutionalised defence cooperation mechanism.  ♦ Princess Astrid is leading the Belgian delegation to India from March 1-8 to strengthen trade and diplomatic ties. The delegation includes representatives from 36 Brussels-based companies, with a focus on key industries like pharmaceuticals, logistics, aerospace, and renewable energy.

97th Academy Awards ceremony

♦ The 97th Academy Awards ceremony took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles on 3 March 2025. The awards presented in 23 categories, honoring films released in 2024. ♦ Director Sean Baker’s romantic comedy-drama Anora emerged as the ceremony’s biggest winner, taking home five awards — Best Picture, Best Actress (Mikey Madison), Best Director, Best Film Editing and Best Original Screenplay.  ♦ Two-time Oscar-winner Adrien Brody won his second Oscar for Brady Corbet’s ‘The Brutalist’ for playing the Hungarian emigre Laszlo Toth. He held the record for youngest actor to win the Oscar in the category for ‘The Pianist’. ♦ Daniel Blumberg wins the Oscar for Best Original Score for Brady Corbet’s ‘The Brutalist’. This is the second win for ‘The Brutalist’ at this year’s ceremony.
