Supreme Court

♦ The Supreme Court has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the apex court of Bhutan to facilitate the exchange of young legal professionals. Under the MoU, two law clerks from Bhutan will be engaged by the Supreme Court here for a period of three months.  ♦ The clerks will receive the same honorarium as Indian law clerks, and their travel expenses will be borne by the Supreme Court.  Introducing the law clerks to the packed courtroom, the CJI described them as young and bright and said they would be assigned to work in different courts during their tenure.

Financial Software and Systems (FSS)

♦ Financial Software and Systems (FSS) has become the first payments company in India, the Middle East, APAC and South Africa to be certified as an ISO IEC 42001 Certification Lead, reinforcing its leadership in responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) in payments and banking technology. By achieving ISO IEC 42001 Certification, FSS signals a shift from ad-hoc AI usage to a structured, enterprise-wide AI governance model, positioning AI governance alongside information security and quality management as a core business priority. ♦ AI is deeply embedded across FSS's platforms, supporting use cases such as fraud detection, transaction monitoring, reconciliation, dispute management, and operational automation. By aligning with ISO IEC 42001, FSS has implemented structured oversight across the entire AI lifecycle, ensuring that AI systems are continuously monitored after deployment and assessed for risks such as bias, unintended outcomes, and regulatory non-compliance.

♦ HSBC has announced the appointment of Ida Liu as Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Private Bank. She brings more than 25 years of global experience across wealth management, strategic advisory and business transformation.  ♦ Ida Liu succeeds Gabriel Castello, who had been serving as the Interim CEO since December 2024. ♦ Most recently, Ida served as Global Head of Citi Private Bank, where she led a global business spanning key wealth corridors and advised UHNW clients on their complex investment, liquidity and legacy needs. Ida began her career in investment banking, advising Fortune 500 companies on mergers and acquisitions and capital markets strategies, with more than half of her investment banking career spent in Asia.

The Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron

♦ The Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron (1TS) will undertake a Long Range Training Deployment to Southeast Asia as part of the training curriculum of the 110th Integrated Officers’ Training Course (IOTC), the Ministry of Defence said on 7 January 2026. The deployment will see Indian Naval Ships INS Tir, INS Shardul and INS Sujata, along with Indian Coast Guard Ship Sarathi, sailing to Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand.  ♦ The initiative aims to provide comprehensive operational and cross-cultural exposure to officer trainees while reinforcing India’s maritime engagement with Southeast Asian nations under the Act East Policy. ♦ The deployment also reflects India’s vision for a free, open and inclusive Indian Ocean Region and contributes to strengthening maritime diplomacy and regional cooperation. ♦ The 110th Integrated Officers’ Training Course includes six international officer trainees, highlighting the Indian Navy’s commitment to capacity building and professional military training for personnel from friendly foreign countries.

Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare

♦ According to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the total area sown under rabi crops in the ongoing winter season has increased to 634.14 lakh hectares as of January 7, marking a rise of 16.4 lakh hectares compared to the same period last year (2025).  ♦ The increase from 617.74 lakh hectares last year is expected to support higher agricultural output, improve farm incomes and help contain food inflation. ♦ Official figures show that the area under wheat has risen to 334.17 lakh hectares, up from 328.04 lakh hectares during the corresponding period last year. Sowing under pulses, including urad, lentil (masur), gram and moong, has increased by 3.44 lakh hectares to 134.3 lakh hectares. ♦ The area under coarse cereals or millets such as jowar, bajra and ragi has grown to 51.79 lakh hectares, compared to 50.66 lakh hectares a year earlier.  ♦ Oilseeds, including rapeseed and mustard, have also recorded an increase, with the sown area rising to 96.3 lakh hectares from 93.27 lakh hectares last year.

India’s real GDP growth rate

♦ India’s real GDP growth rate has been projected at 7.4 percent for FY 2025–26, up from 6.5 percent in FY 2024–25, according to the advanced estimates released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on 7 January 2026. The estimates show that strong momentum in the services sector will be the main driver of growth. Financial services, real estate, professional services and public administration are projected to grow by 9.9 percent at constant prices in FY 2025–26. ♦ Trade, hotels, transport, communication and services related to broadcasting are estimated to expand by 7.5 percent. ♦ The agriculture sector is estimated to record a growth rate of 3.1 percent. ♦ Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF), a key indicator of investment activity, is estimated to grow by 7.8 percent at constant prices during FY 2025–26, compared to 7.1 percent in the previous financial year (2024-25).

Piyush Goyal held talks with Sabine Monauni

♦ Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held talks with Sabine Monauni, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Liechtenstein on 7January 2026, to explore ways to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries. The discussions focused on expanding trade, innovation and clean technology collaboration, while also exploring avenues to deepen bilateral ties after the operationalisation of the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA). ♦ The India–European Free Trade Association (EFTA) TEPA is scheduled to become operational from October 1. The four-nation EFTA bloc comprises European Free Trade Association members Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. ♦ Under the agreement, the EFTA countries have committed investments worth $100 billion over 15 years, which is expected to facilitate the creation of one million direct jobs in India.

జనాభా లెక్కల సేకరణ

దేశవ్యాప్తంగా జనాభా లెక్కల సేకరణ-2027లో భాగంగా తొలి దశలో ఏప్రిల్‌ 1 నుంచి సెప్టెంబరు 30 వరకు అన్ని రాష్ట్రాలు, కేంద్ర పాలిత ప్రాంతాల్లో గృహాలు, నిర్మాణాల జాబితాల తయారీ, వాటి నమోదు ప్రక్రియను చేపట్టనున్నారు. ఈ విషయాన్ని కేంద్ర హోంశాఖ 2026, జనవరి 7న వెల్లడించింది. తొలుత 30 రోజుల పాటు అన్ని గృహాలు, నిర్మాణాల జాబితాను తయారు చేస్తారు. అనంతరం ప్రతి ఇంటికీ వెళ్లి ఏ తరహా నిర్మాణం, వంట గది, స్నానాల గది తదితర సదుపాయాల వివరాలను నమోదు చేస్తారు. ఈ దఫా కొత్తగా స్వీయ గణన నమోదు అవకాశాన్నీ కల్పిస్తున్నట్లు కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వం పేర్కొంది.

విద్యుత్‌ వాహనాల విక్రయాలు

విద్యుత్‌ వాహన (ఈవీ) రిటెయిల్‌ అమ్మకాలు, 2025లో 22,70,107కు చేరాయి. 2024లో అమ్ముడైన  19.5 లక్షల ఈవీలతో పోలిస్తే, ఈ సంఖ్య 16.37% అధికమని వాహన డీలర్ల సంఘాల సమాఖ్య (ఫాడా) పేర్కొంది. ముఖ్యంగా విద్యుత్తు కార్ల విక్రయాల్లో 77% వృద్ధి నమోదైంది.

దేశ వృద్ధి రేటు 7.4%

గణాంకాలు, పథకాల అమలు మంత్రిత్వ శాఖ (మోస్పి) విడుదల చేసిన తొలి ముందస్తు అంచనాల ప్రకారం 2025-26లో వృద్ధిరేటు 7.4 శాతంగా నమోదు కానుంది. ఆర్‌బీఐ అంచనా వేసిన 7.3% కంటే, ప్రభుత్వ ప్రాథమిక అంచనా అయిన 6.3-6.8% కంటే మెరుగ్గా 7.4 శాతంగా నమోదు కానున్నట్లు పేర్కొంది. ప్రపంచంలోనే అత్యంత వేగవంత ఆర్థిక వ్యవస్థగా మనదేశం కొనసాగనన్నట్లు మోస్పి వెల్లడించింది. గత ఆర్థిక సంవత్సరం (2024-25)లో వృద్ధిరేటు 6.5 శాతంగా నమోదైంది. 2025-26లో వాస్తవ లేదా స్థిర ధరల వద్ద జీడీపీ రూ.201.90 లక్షల కోట్లకు చేరుతుందని మోస్పి అంచనా వేసింది.
