India-Mongolia joint military exercise

♦ The 17th edition of the India-Mongolia joint military exercise – Nomadic Elephant is underway at the Special Forces training centre at Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia. ♦ This edition of the exercise, which is scheduled to run from 31st May to 13th June, is set to include an expanded range of activities that reflect the growing defence cooperation between India and Mongolia.    ♦ The joint drills will involve counter-terrorism operations in semi-mountainous terrain, a critical area of operational focus given the contemporary security landscape. ♦ The troops will also rehearse activities conducted during United Nations peacekeeping operations, simulating real-world situations where multinational forces must collaborate effectively in complex environments.

World Tobacco Day

♦ World No Tobacco Day is observed every year on May 31 to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and promote healthier lifestyles. ♦ In 1987, WHO’s Member States declared April 7, 1988, as a ‘World No-Smoking Day’ to mark WHO’s 40th anniversary. ♦ Later, the WHO passed a resolution to observe World No Tobacco Day on May 31. ♦ Since then, the organisation has used this platform to highlight tobacco-related health risks and raise more awareness. ♦ 20205 theme: ‘Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products.’

♦ Miss Thailand Opal Suchata Chuangsri was crowned Miss World 2025 at the 72nd Miss World Pageant held in Hyderabad on 31 May 2025. ♦ Miss World 2024 Krystyna Pyszková crowned Miss Thailand Opal Suchata Chuangsri. ♦ While Ethiopia’s Hasset Dereje emerged as the first runner-up, Maja Klajda from Poland won the second runner-up title. ♦ Maja Klajda, Psychology student from Warsaw, Poland, bagged the second runner-up title. ♦ The grand finale brought together 108 contestants from around the globe.  ♦ Opal Suchata Chuangsri, born on March 20, 2003, in Phuket, Thailand, is the first Thai woman to win the Miss World title.  ♦ Six Indian women have won the title, including Reita Faria (1966), Aishwarya Rai (1994), Diana Hayden (1997), Yukta Mookhey (1999), Priyanka Chopra (2000) and Manushi Chillar (2017). ♦ India is hosting Miss World for the third time. ♦ The first ever Miss World pageant was held in Bengaluru in 1996, two years after Aishwarya Rai won the crown in 1994 and last year, Delhi and Mumbai hosted the 71st Miss World.

Asian Athletics Championships 2025 in Gumi

♦ India finished second in the medal tally with 24 medals at the Asian Athletics Championships 2025 in Gumi, South Korea on 31 May 2025. ♦ India clinched eight gold, 10 silver and six bronze in the Championships.  ♦ On 31 May, India bagged 3 silver and 3 bronze medals. ♦ In the women’s 4×100 metre relay race, Indian team of Srabani Nanda, Abhinaya Rajarajan, Sneha SS, and Nithya Gandhe claimed silver medal. ♦ In womens 5000 metres final, Parul Chaudhary clinched silver, while Sachin Yadav claimed silver in Men’s Javelin Throw. ♦ Pooja won a bronze in womens 800 metres final, while Animesh Kujur claimed it in 200 metre event and Vithya Ramraj in 400 metre Hurdles.
