World AIDS Day

♦ World AIDS Day is observed annually on December 1 to focus global attention on the HIV/AIDS epidemic, raise awareness, and honour those who have died from AIDS. This day was first established in 1988 by the World Health Organization (WHO).   ♦ As per the recent India HIV Estimations 2023 report, over 2.5 million people are living with HIV in India, the adult HIV prevalence is at 0.2 % and estimated annual new HIV infections are at around 66,400. Goods and Services Tax (GST)

♦ The total gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections grew 8.5 percent to over Rs.1.82 lakh crore in November 2024 as compared to the same month in 2023. The total gross GST revenue in November 2023 was Rs.1.68 lakh crore.  ♦ In 2024 November, the Central GST collection stood at Rs.34,141 crore, State GST at Rs.43,047 crore, Integrated IGST at Rs.91,828 crore and cess at Rs.13,253 crore. ♦ In 2024 October, GST collections of Rs.1.87 lakh crore were the second-best GST mop-up with 9 percent annual growth. The highest-ever collection was in April 2024 at over Rs.2.10 lakh crore.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)

♦ US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Indian-American Kash Patel to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). ♦ He served as chief of staff to the Acting United States Secretary of Defense in the last few weeks of the Trump Administration in 2017.  ♦ New York-born Mr. Patel has his roots in Gujarat. However, his parents are from East Africa — mother from Tanzania and father from Uganda. They came to the U.S. from Canada in 1970. ♦ With this appointment, Patel became the second Indian American to be picked in his cabinet. ♦ Previously, Trump picked Indian-American scientist Jay Bhattacharya as the director of the National Institutes of Health, the country’s top health research and funding institutions.

♦ Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi has become the second Indian in history to reach the prestigious 2800 Elo rating in classical chess. PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen

♦ Ace Indian Shuttlers PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen were crowned the Singles champions at the Syed Modi International Tournament in Lucknow on 1 December 2024. ♦ Sindhu clinched Women’s Singles title, overpowering China’s Wu Luo Yu, 21-14, 21-16 in the final. ♦ Lakshya Sen won his maiden title in the event with a facile 21-6, 21-7 win against Singapore’s Jia Heng Jason Teh. ♦ Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand won the Women’s Doubles title. The second seed Indian team defeated Chinese duo Bao Li Jing and Li Qian, 21-18, 21-11 in the Summit Clash. ♦ They became the first ever Indian women’s pair to win the title since its inception in 2009.
