♦ Veer Bal Diwas is celebrated every year on 26 December to commemorate the extraordinary sacrifices made by the four sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. ♦ The poignant tale of Guru Gobind Singh Ji's four sons, Baba Ajit Singh, Baba Jujhar Singh, Baba Zorawar Singh, and Baba Fateh Singh is how Veer Bal Diwas was inspired.   ♦ Ajit Singh and Jujhar Singh, the two older sons, bravely gave their lives during the Battle of Chamkaur in December 1705. ♦ The Mughal troops grabbed and brutally coerced their younger brothers, Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh. ♦ Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022 declared to mark December 26 as Veer Bal Diwas annually to honour and remember their sacrifice.

World's largest dam

♦ China has approved the construction of the world's largest dam, stated to be the planet's biggest infra project costing $137 billion, on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet close to the Indian border. ♦ The Chinese government has approved the construction of a hydropower project in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River, the Tibetan name for the Brahmaputra. ♦ The dam is to be built at a huge gorge in the Himalayan reaches where the Brahmaputra river makes a huge U-turn to flow into Arunachal Pradesh and then to Bangladesh. ♦ China has already Operationalised the $1.5 billion Zam Hydropower Station, the largest in Tibet in 2015. ♦ The Brahmaputra dam was part of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) and National Economic and Social Development and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035 adopted by Plenum, a key policy body of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) in 2020.

♦ The Reserve Bank announced the setting up of an eight-member committee to develop a framework for responsible and ethical enablement of artificial intelligence (FREE-AI) in the financial sector on 26 December 2024. ♦ The committee was headed by IIT Bombay professor Pushpak Bhattacharyya (Department of Computer Science and Engineering). ♦ The panel will assess the current level of adoption of AI in financial services, globally as well as in India.  ♦ It will also review regulatory and supervisory approaches to AI with a focus on the financial sector globally. The panel will also identify potential risks associated with AI, if any, and recommend an evaluation, mitigation and monitoring framework and consequent compliance requirements for financial institutions, including banks, NBFCs, FinTechs, PSOs, etc. ♦ The committee will recommend a framework including governance aspects for responsible, ethical adoption of AI models/applications in the Indian financial sector.

♦ President Droupadi Murmu conferred the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar to 17 children at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre in New Delhi on 26 December 2024. ♦ The children were awarded in seven categories for their exceptional achievements. ♦ The prestigious awards celebrate extraordinary accomplishments in art and culture, bravery, innovation, science and technology, social service, and environmental conservation. ♦ The awardees - seven boys and 10 girls were selected from 14 States and union territories. ♦ Among them was Keya Hatkar (14) author and disability advocate who was recognised for her excellence in art and culture. ♦ Ayaan Sajad (12) Sufi singer from Kashmir, was honoured for his soulful contributions to Kashmiri music and culture. ♦ Vyas Om Jignesh (17) was honoured for his dedication to Sanskrit literature, having memorised over 5,000 shlokas and performed in more than 500 shows across India. ♦ In the bravery category, Saurav Kumar (9) was awarded for saving three girls from drowning, while 17-year-old Ioanna Thapa was honoured for rescuing 36 residents of a flat from a fire, displaying quick thinking and courage. ♦ The award for innovation went to Sindhoora Raja (15) for her technological contributions. ♦ Similarly, cybersecurity entrepreneur Risheek Kumar (17) was lauded for founding Kashmir's first cybersecurity firm and launching the "Hack Free Bharat" initiative. ♦ In sports, Hembati Nag, a judo player was recognized for her silver medal at the Khelo India National Games, while 9-year-old Saanvi Sood's record-breaking mountaineering feats, including summiting Mount Kilimanjaro. ♦ Chess prodigy Anish Sarkar (3) made history as the youngest FIDE-ranked player.
