Forbes’ 2024 list of India’s 100 richest tycoons

♦ CMD of Reliance Industries, Mukesh Ambani has retained the top spot on Forbes’ 2024 list of India’s 100 richest tycoons. Ambani’s net worth now stands at $119.5 billion. Adani group Chairman Gautam Adani came second on the Forbes list with a combined family wealth of $116 billion.  ♦ Savitri Jindal ($43.7 billion), Shiv Nadar ($40.2 billion), Dilip Shanghvi ($32.4 billion), Radhakishan Damani ($31.5 billion), Sunil Mittal ($30.7 billion), Kumar Birla ($24.8 billion), Cyrus Poonawalla ($24.5 billion) and the Bajaj Family ($23.4 billion) completed the list of top 10 richest individuals/ families. ♦ The combined wealth of the top 100 on the Forbes rich list for 2024 crossed an historic milestone of a trillion dollar and the total wealth jumped 40 percent to $1.1 trillion in 2024, rising from $799 billion reported in 2023.

The Indian Navy has signed a MoU with Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance

♦ The Indian Navy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company to provide a diverse range of insurance products, including term insurance, to Naval Civilians at competitive premiums. This initiative is part of the Indian Navy’s “Year of Naval Civilians,” aimed at promoting welfare and inclusivity. ♦ The insurance can be availed by Naval Civilians on a voluntary basis. This will help in providing instant financial relief in case of the death of the incumbent or any other eventuality as covered under insurance policy.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

♦ United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed former British diplomat Tom Fletcher as the new UN Humanitarian Chief. He replaced Martin Griffiths, who stepped down at the end of June for health reasons. ♦ Fletcher is currently the principal of Hertford College, Oxford. He was the British ambassador to Lebanon from 2011-2015 and served as the foreign and development policy adviser to three British prime ministers between 2007-2011.

2024 Nobel Prize in Literature

♦ The 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to South Korean author Han Kang on October 10. She got this award "for her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life." ♦ Han Kang was born in Gwangju, South Korea, in 1970. She is widely known for her novel The Vegetarian, which was written in three parts. She is the first South Korean writer to win the award.  ♦ Kang began her career in 1993 with the publication of a number of poems in the magazine Literature and Society. Her prose debut came in 1995 with the short story collection Love of Yeosu, followed soon afterwards by several other prose works, both novels and short stories. ♦ The prize is awarded by the Swedish Academy and is worth 11 million Swedish crowns ($1.1 million).

Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024

♦ The Indian men’s team won the bronze medal at the Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024 in Astana, Kazakhstan on 10 October 2024. They lost in the semi-final clash against Chinese Taipei by a 3-0 margin. ♦ Sharath Kamal went down 0-3 to Lin Yun-Ju in the opening singles rubber. In the second singles match, Manav Thakkar fought hard before losing 1-3 to Kao Cheng-Jui.  ♦ This was India’s third straight medal in the men’s team event at the Asian Table Tennis Championships. India had won bronze in the previous two editions in 2023 and 2021.

Spain’s tennis legend Rafael Nadal (38)

♦ Spain’s tennis legend Rafael Nadal (38) has announced his retirement from professional tennis on 10 October 2024. Nadal’s final tournament will be the Davis Cup finals this November in Malaga.  ♦ He is a 22-time Grand Slam singles champion. He won the French Open singles title a record 14 times. He is also a four-time US Open champion and won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon twice. ♦ Nadal has a total of 92 ATP singles titles to his name, including 36 Masters titles as well as an Olympic gold medal. , winning 112 of his 116 major matches at Roland Garros. ♦ He also holds the unique record of being one of three men in tennis history to complete the Career Golden Slam in singles. He won his last Roland Garros title in 2022 and left the Paris clay with a jaw-dropping 112-4 win-loss record. ♦ Nadal's two-decade career saw him lift 92 titles and accumulate over $135 million in prize money. His Grand Slam winning-journey began with his maiden French Open victory just days after turning 19 in 2005. ♦ A five-time year-end world number one, he remained in the ATP top 10 for an incredible 17 years, from 2005 until March 2024. During his peak years, he spent 209 weeks ranked as the world’s top player and won at least one title every year from 2004 to 2022.

21st ASEAN-India Summit in Laos

♦ Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the 21st ASEAN-India Summit in Laos on 10 October 2024. There he announced a 10-point plan to strengthen India-ASEAN comprehensive partnership and asserted that ties with the regional grouping were critical to guiding Asia’s future. ♦ Modi noted that India-ASEAN trade had doubled to over USD 130 billion in the past decade and announced a review of the trade in goods agreement to harness the greater economic potential of the partnership. ♦ The Prime Minister said India was commemorating the 10th anniversary of its Act East Policy, which has given new energy, direction and momentum to the historic relationship between India and the ASEAN nations. ♦ The 10 member countries of ASEAN are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia.
