Romania and Bulgaria

♦ Romania and Bulgaria officially joined the EU’s Schengen zone on 1 January 2025. The move allows residents to travel freely without passport checks. Austria, a key opponent, vetoed Romania’s and Bulgaira’s entry to the zone in 2022. While controls on air and sea borders were lifted earlier last year (2024), the European Union only decided to remove border controls for the two countries after Austria dropped its veto last month (December 2024). ♦ Schengen zone consists of 29 European countries that have eliminated internal border controls. Established in 1995, it functions like a single state for international travel, featuring unified external border controls and shared visa policies.

R. Vaishali

India’s R. Vaishali clinched a bronze medal in the women’s section of the World Blitz Championship on 1 January 2025. China's Ju Wenjun defeated Vaishali with 0.5-2.5 in the semis. Chinese Ju Wenjun won the world title by defeating compatriot Lei Tingjie by 3.5-2.5 in the final.

Jeetendra Mishra

♦ Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra assumed command of the Indian Air Force’s Western Air Command on 1 January 2025. He was Commissioned into the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot in December 1986. Jeetendra Mishra succeeded Air Marshal Pankaj Mohan Sinha who superannuated on 31 December 2024. ♦ Jeetendra Mishra is a recipient of ‘Ati Vishisht Seva Medal’ and ‘Vishisht Seva Medal’.

India Meteorological Department

♦ The India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed that 2024 was the warmest year on record in the country since 1901. It also noted that the last three months of the 2024 (October-December) together were the warmest on record whereas October 2024, individually, was the warmest month in 123 years. ♦ With an annual mean temperature of 25.75 degrees Celsius, 2024 was 0.65 degree Celsius above the long-term average (1991-2020 period). ♦ The previous warmest year, 2016, had an anomaly of 0.54 degree Celsius. As annual averages go, the difference of 0.11 degree Celsius between the mean temperature in 2016 and 2024 is quite huge.

India’s overall greenhouse gas

♦ India’s overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions dropped by 7.93 percent in 2020 as compared to 2019, as per the data submitted to the UN climate change office. The data reveals a decline in the emission intensity of India’s GDP by 36 percent from 2005 to 2020. The fourth Biennial Update Report (BUR-4) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) shows total national emissions in 2020 at 2,959 million tonnes of carbon dioxide  equivalent, excluding land use change.  ♦ However, emissions are still up by 98.34 percent since 1994. India is on track with its climate goals, aiming to reduce GDP emission intensity by 45 percent by 2030 and achieve 50 per cent electric power capacity from non-fossil fuels.

Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana

♦ The Union Cabinet on 1 January 2025 approved the continuation of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and the Restructured Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS) until 2025-26, with an overall outlay of Rs. 69,515 crore for the period 2021-22 to 2025-26.  ♦ The Cabinet has also approved the establishment of the Fund for Innovation and Technology (FIAT) with a corpus of Rs. 824 crore. This fund will support large-scale technological infusion, ensuring greater transparency and improved claim calculation and settlement under the scheme. ♦ The Union Cabinet has approved an extension of the One-time Special Package on Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP). This package, providing an additional subsidy of ₹3,500 per metric tonne over the existing Nutrient-Based Subsidy (NBS), will now continue beyond January 1, 2025, until further notice. The decision aims to ensure the continued availability of DAP at affordable prices for farmers.

India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST)

♦ India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections rose to Rs.1.77 lakh crore in December 2024, a 7.3% increase compared to Rs.1.65 lakh crore in December 2023. ♦ The breakdown of December’s GST collections includes Rs.32,836 crore from the Central GST, Rs.40,499 crore from the State GST, Rs.47,783 crore from the Integrated GST, and Rs.11,471 crore from cess. ♦ Revenue from domestic transactions grew by 8.4% to Rs.1.32 lakh crore, while tax collections from imports increased by 4% to Rs.44,268 crore during the month. ♦ In November 2024, the GST revenue stood at Rs.1.82 lakh crore, marking an 8.5% year-on-year growth. The highest-ever GST collection was recorded in April 2024, exceeding Rs.2.10 lakh crore.

డిసెంబరులో జీఎస్టీ వసూళ్లు రూ.1.77 లక్షల కోట్లు

2024 డిసెంబరులో స్థూల జీఎస్‌టీ వసూళ్లు రూ.1.77 లక్షల కోట్లకు చేరాయి. 2023 డిసెంబరు  వసూళ్లు రూ.1.65 లక్షల కోట్లతో పోలిస్తే ఇవి 7.3% అధికం. 2024 నవంబరు వసూళ్లు రూ.1.82 లక్షల కోట్లతో పోలిస్తే తాజా వసూళ్లు తక్కువే. ఇప్పటిదాకా నెలవారీ అత్యధిక వసూళ్లు (రూ.2.10 లక్షల కోట్లు) 2024 ఏప్రిల్‌లో నమోదయ్యాయి. డిసెంబరులో మొత్తం రూ.22,490 కోట్ల రిఫండ్‌లు జారీ అయ్యాయి.

జితేంద్ర మిశ్ర

వైమానిక దళానికి చెందిన వెస్ట్రన్‌ ఎయిర్‌ కమాండ్‌ విభాగం అధిపతిగా ఎయిర్‌ మార్షల్‌ జితేంద్ర మిశ్ర 2025, జనవరి 1న బాధ్యతలు స్వీకరించారు. ఉత్తర భారతదేశంలోని కొన్ని భాగాలతో పాటు సున్నిత ప్రాంతమైన లద్ధాఖ్‌ సెక్టార్‌ భద్రత బాధ్యతను వెస్ట్రన్‌ ఎయిర్‌ కమాండ్‌ నిర్వర్తిస్తుంది. ఫైటర్‌ కంబాట్‌ లీడర్‌గా, పైలట్‌గా జితేంద్ర మిశ్ర అనుభవజ్ఞులు.  జితేంద్ర మిశ్ర 1986లో ఫైటర్‌ పైలట్‌గా ఎయిర్‌ఫోర్స్‌లో చేరారు.

ప్రపంచ బ్లిట్జ్‌లో వైశాలికి కాంస్యం

ప్రపంచ బ్లిట్జ్‌ ఛాంపియన్‌షిప్‌లో తమిళనాడుకు చెందిన ఆర్‌.వైశాలి కాంస్యం నెగ్గింది. 2025, జనవరి 1న జరిగిన సెమీస్‌లో 0.5-2.5తో జు వెన్‌జున్‌ (చైనా) చేతిలో ఓడింది. ఫైనల్లో వెన్‌జున్‌ 3.5-2.5తో లీ టింగ్‌జీ (చైనా)పై నెగ్గి విజేతగా నిలిచింది.  2016లో ఇంటర్నేషనల్‌ మాస్టర్‌ అయిన వైశాలి.. 2018లో మహిళా గ్రాండ్‌మాస్టర్‌ ఘనత సాధించింది.
