♦ Luong Cuong (67) was elected as the new president of Vietnam by the country's National Assembly on 21 October 2024. He replaced To Lam. Cuong is the fourth official to fill the role in 18 months. ♦ Cuong is a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee and a permanent member of the CPV Central Committee Secretariat. ♦ Cuong has served in the Vietnamese army for over four decades and has been a Politburo member since 2021.
♦ India, the US, Australia and Japan have announced the continuation of the Quad Cyber Challenge for strengthening responsible cyber ecosystems, promoting public resources and raising cybersecurity awareness. ♦ The theme of this year’s (2024) challenge is "promoting cybersecurity education and building a strong workforce." ♦ Earlier in 2023, Quad had launched a public campaign ‘Quad Cyber Challenge’ to improve cyber security across their nations. The US hosted a Quad Cyber Challenge event at the White House joined by officials from Australia, India, and Japan.
♦ Indian archer Deepika Kumari won the silver medal in the Archery World Cup final at Tlaxcala, Mexico on 21 October 2024. She lost the match with a 0-6 against Chinese Li Jiaman. ♦ This is her sixth World Cup medal. Deepika captured silver medals in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2024. She also won a bronze medal in 2018. ♦ Dola Banerjee remains the only Indian to have won a gold in the World Cup Final, having topped the podium in Dubai 2007.
♦ Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan met with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on 21 October 2024 to explore ways to enhance cooperation in school education, vocational training, and research. ♦ The talks focused on strengthening the partnership through three key pillars - "Talent, Resource and Market". ♦ Dharmendra Pradhan visit to Singapore, followed by a trip to Australia, from October 20 to 26, 2024, aims to foster collaboration, participation and synergy in critical areas of mutual interest in education.
♦ India and China reached an arrangement for both sides to patrol along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh on 21 October 2024. ♦ Relations between the two neighbours have been tense since a 2020 clash along the eastern Ladakh border, which led to the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese PLA soldiers. ♦ In fierce clashes between the two sides in the Galwan River valley in June 2020, 20 Indian soldiers were killed in action, while an indeterminate number of Chinese soldiers were also killed or injured. ♦ In negotiations since then, the two sides claim to have resolved disagreements over the alignment of the LAC in three areas: Galwan Valley, Gogra-Hot Springs, and Pangong Lake area.
