Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)

♦ Swedish aerospace and defence company Saab has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Electronic Warfare and Laser Warning System-310 (LWS-310). ♦ This agreement strengthens the longstanding partnership between the two companies, which began in 2005 during the development of the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Programme. ♦ The MoU provides for a Maintenance Transfer of Technology, which aligns with the Indian Defence Procurement Procedure so that HAL will gain the capability to manufacture LWS-310 within India.  ♦ The LWS-310 is an advanced laser warning and electronic warfare system designed to enhance combat vehicles' survivability against laser-guided threats. ♦ The system detects and classifies laser threats in real-time, allowing a combat management system to employ effective countermeasures.

♦ Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with US President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington, DC, on 14 February 2025. ♦ During the meeting, Modi and Trump discussed various issues, including trade, defense, technology, energy, security, and people-to-people ties. ♦ They also exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual interest.  ♦ The two leaders have jointly launched the US-India Compact for the 21st Century to foster deeper collaboration in defense, trade, and technology. ♦ In the area of trade and investment, Mission-500 has been introduced to more than double total two-way trade to USD 500 billion by 2030. ♦ Additionally, the leaders unveiled plans to establish a new 10-year framework for the US-India Major Defence Partnership, spanning from 2025 to 2035. ♦ Trump said that the United States will sell F-35 fighter jets to India, which would join the elite club of countries with the state-of-the-art stealth planes.

Wholesale Price Index (WPI)

♦ India’s annual Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation eased to 2.31% in January 2025 from 2.37% in December 2024, according to data released by the Commerce and Industry Ministry on 14 February 2025. ♦ Month-over-month, the WPI declined by 0.45% in January, driven by lower food prices. ♦ The index for primary articles fell by 2.01% as food article prices dropped by 3.62%. However, prices of crude petroleum and natural gas (6.34%), non-food articles (0.66%), and minerals (0.22%) increased. ♦ Inflation in the fuel and power category rose by 0.47%, though coal prices remained unchanged from December 2024. ♦ Manufactured products, which account for 64.23% of the index, saw a marginal increase of 0.14%. Out of 22 manufacturing groups, 15 recorded price increases, five saw declines, and two remained unchanged.  ♦ The WPI Food Index inflation dropped from 8.89% in December 2024 to 7.47% in January 2025.
