Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL)

♦ Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL), one of India’s premier defense shipbuilding yards is showcasing its indigenously designed Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) and Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) at NAVDEX 2025 in Abu Dhabi on 19 February 2025. ♦ The Fast Patrol Vessel(Model) on display is a 50-meter-long, high-speed craft capable of reaching 35 knots. ♦ Designed and built in-house by GSL, it is primarily intended for patrolling, anti-smuggling, and anti-terrorist operations. ♦ The vessel is powered by three 2,720 kW diesel engines driving independent waterjets, offering high maneuverability and efficiency.  ♦ Established in 1957, GSL has evolved into a leading defense shipbuilder, recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) for its indigenous warship design and development.  ♦ NAVDEX 2025, held alongside IDEX, serves as a vital platform f  or international cooperation in defense and security. Organized by ADNEC Group in partnership with the UAE Ministry of Defence and Tawazun Council.

International Association of Aids to Marine Navigation (IALA)

♦ India was elected to the Vice Presidency of the International Association of Aids to Marine Navigation (IALA) at the ongoing first General Assembly of IALA in Singapore on 19 February 2025. ♦ The Indian delegation is being led by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Secretary, T.K. Ramachandran.  ♦ The election reinforces the country’s dedication to advancing maritime safety, enhancing navigational aids, and fostering international cooperation within the maritime sector. ♦ IALA was established in 1957 as an NGO, transitioned to an IGO to enhance its role in shaping international standards and best practices for safe and efficient navigation. ♦ India is hosting the IALA Council meeting in December 2025 and the IALA Conference & General Assembly in September 2027 in Mumbai.

India and Argentina signed a Memorandum of Understanding

♦ India and Argentina signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in Lithium exploration and mining on 19 February 2025. ♦ The agreement was signed during a meeting held by Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy with Governor of Catamarca, Argentina Raúl Alejandro Jalil in New Delhi. ♦ During the meeting, the discussions focused on expanding cooperation in the mining sector, particularly in lithium exploration and investment opportunities. ♦ With the signing of the MoU, India and Argentina have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties in the critical minerals domain. ♦ This collaboration is expected to accelerate lithium exploration projects, enhance resource security, and create new opportunities for Indian companies in the Latin American mining landscape.

Newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC)

♦ Newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar assumed office on 19 February 2025. ♦ Gyanesh Kumar is a 1988-batch IAS officer from the Kerala cadre, now leads the three-member Election Commission panel. ♦ He is senior to the other two commissioners—Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, an IAS officer from the Uttarakhand cadre, and Vivek Joshi, a 1989-batch IAS officer from the Haryana cadre.  ♦ Vivek Joshi also officially took charge as Election Commissioner.

♦ The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) launched the Digital Brand Identity Manual (DBIM) and hosting the inaugural Chief Information Officer (CIO) Conference 2025 in New Delhi. ♦ The event, held under the 'Gov.In: Harmonisation of Government of India’s Digital Footprint' initiative, was presided over by Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Jitin Prasada, and MeitY Secretary, S. Krishnan. ♦ As part of the launch, MeitY unveiled its own DBIM-compliant website.  ♦ The First CIO Conference 2025 brought together experts from MeitY, NIC, MyGov, and various other ministries to discuss the adoption and implementation of DBIM.

♦ The Bharatiya Janata Party announced Rekha Gupta as the leader of the BJP’s Delhi legislative party on 19 February 2025. ♦ She is the MLA from Shalimar Bagh. The BJP, which had been out of power in Delhi since 1998, won a convincing victory in the 2025 Assembly elections, winning 48 seats in the 70-member Assembly, and reducing the AAP to 22. ♦ Rekha Gupta took oath as Chief Minister on February 20. She became the fourth woman CM of Delhi. Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit and Atishi are the other women who have held the post.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal

♦ Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the Inland Waterways Terminal (IWT) at Jogighopa, Assam  marking a milestone in India’s inland water transport network. ♦ To commemorate the occasion, a vessel with two barges—MV Trishul, accompanied by Barges Ajay and Dikshu—was flagged off, carrying 110 metric tonnes of coal and stone chips to Bangladesh. ♦ The foundation stone for the terminal was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2021. ♦ The newly inaugurated terminal in Jogighopa is strategically located and connected to the Multi-Modal Logistics Park. ♦ It is expected to serve as an international port of call for Bhutan and Bangladesh, facilitating seamless cargo movement across Assam and the Northeast region.  ♦ The Jogighopa terminal plays a crucial role in India’s trade with Bangladesh and Bhutan. ♦ It is located 91 km from Gelephu (Bhutan), 108 km from the Bangladesh border, and 147 km from Guwahati. Additionally, it serves as a designated Port of Call under the Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade (PIWT&T) agreement with Bangladesh. ♦ ​​​​​​​By 2027, the terminal is projected to handle 1.1 million tonnes of cargo annually.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)

♦ The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India, and the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhancing scientific collaboration between India and Nepal. ♦ It aimed at bolstering scientific and technological cooperation. ♦ The MoU was formalized at the CSIR-National Physical Laboratory (CSIR-NPL) in New Delhi. ♦ The agreement was signed by Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Director General of CSIR and Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), and Prof. Dr. Dilip Subba, Vice-Chancellor of NAST. ♦ It establishes a broad framework for collaboration in areas such as biological sciences, water technologies, alternative energy, material sciences, and more. ♦ ​​​​​​​The partnership between CSIR and NAST dates back to 1994, and this new agreement seeks to revitalize the collaboration through joint research projects, seminars, and capacity-building programs.
