The Union Government has extended the tenure of NITI Aayog

♦ The Union Government has extended the tenure of NITI Aayog Chief Executive Officer (CEO) BVR Subrahmanyam by one year on 20 February 2025. ♦ He is a 1987-batch retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Chhattisgarh cadre. ♦ He was appointed to the post for a period of two years in February 2023. ♦ The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved extension in Subrahmanyam's tenure as NITI Aayog CEO for a period of one year beyond February 24, 2025, the order said. ♦ u​​​​​​​Also, Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran's term has been extended by two years until March 2027.

♦ Indian cue sports maestro Pankaj Advani clinched 14th gold medal at the Asian Snooker Championship at Doha, Qatar on 20 February 2025. ♦ He defeated Iran’s Amir Sarkhosh in the final.  ♦ ​​​​​​​Pankaj Advani now holds five Asian snooker titles (across 15-red, 6-reds, and team formats) alongside nine Asian billiards titles, and his two Asian Games gold medals (2006, 2010).

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL)

♦ The Ministry of Defence has inked a contract worth Rs.1220.12 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru, for the procurement of 149 state-of-the-art Software Defined Radios (SDRs) for the Indian Coast Guard on 20 February 2025. ♦ The advanced SDRs will enable secure and reliable communication, supporting high-speed data sharing and secure voice transmission. ♦ Earlier this month, the Ministry of Defence also signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in New Delhi for the procurement of 28 EON-51 systems, intended for 11 New Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels and three Cadet Training Ships for the Indian Navy, valued at Rs. 642.17 crore.

♦ Bain & Company and Nasscom released the 'India @2047: Transforming India into a Tech-Driven Economy' report on 20 February 2025. ♦ According to this, India is set to transform into a high-income country with a projected GDP of $23–$35 trillion by 2047, driven by sustained annual growth of 8-10 percent. Key Highlights: ♦ By 2047, the services sector is expected to contribute 60% of India’s GDP, while manufacturing will account for 32%, both playing a crucial role in economic expansion. ♦ Electronics, energy, chemicals, automotive, and services sectors would act as strategic growth levers due to alignment with global trends and scalability. ♦ Advances in AI-driven chip design, touchless manufacturing, and backward integration into component manufacturing and design could enhance cost competitiveness and innovation, driving the sector’s export share from 24 percent to 45 percent-50 percent by 2047 and its GDP contribution from 3 percent to 8 percent-10 percent. ♦ India’s share of renewables in overall energy generation has the potential to rise from 24 percent in 2023 to 70 percent in 2047 backed by modernising energy infrastructure, and scaled investments in green energy. ♦ India is also likely to transition from a net energy importer to a net exporter. ♦ Auto-components  exports sector is likely to reach $200–$250 billion (by 2047), driven by near-term share capture in ICE market and longer-term shift to EVs.

Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu

♦ Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu launched the Electronic Personnel License (EPL) for pilots on 20 February 2025. ♦ This initiative, made India the second country in the world to implement digital pilot licenses, following approval from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). ♦ Replacing traditional physical licenses, the EPL will now be available in a digital format, accessible through the eGCA Mobile Application.  ♦ The adoption of EPL follows ICAO’s Amendment 178 to Annex 1 – Personnel Licensing, which encourages electronic licensing for improved efficiency and security. ♦ For years, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued pilot licenses in smart card format, with over 62,000 such licenses already distributed. ♦ ​​​​​​​In 2024 alone, nearly 20,000 pilots required printed card licenses, averaging 1,667 cards per month.
