launch of the Make in India initiative

♦ India has achieved the highest-ever growth in indigenous defence production in 2023-24 since the launch of the Make in India initiative, reaching a record Rs.1.27 lakh crore. ♦The Defence Ministry said the value of defence production has surged by 174 percent from Rs.46,429 crore in 2014-15.  ♦The surge in the defence budget, from Rs.2.53 lakh crore in 2013-14 to Rs.6.81 lakh crore in 2025-26, underlines the nation’s determination to strengthen its military infrastructure. ♦ Defence exports have surged from Rs.686 crore in FY 2013-14 to an all-time high of Rs.21,083 crore in FY 2023-24, marking a 30-fold increase over the past decade.

Awarded the prestigious Stockholm Water Prize

♦ Hydrologist Günter Blöschl was awarded the prestigious Stockholm Water Prize. ♦ The award recognizes Blöschl’s groundbreaking work in understanding flood risks and water resource management under climate change.  ♦ Blöschl is a professor at the Vienna University of Technology, the current head of the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management at the Vienna University of Technology.  ♦ The Stockholm Water Prize is awarded by the Stockholm Water Foundation in cooperation with the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. ♦ The Prize will be presented to Blöschl by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, official patron of the Prize, during World Water Week in Stockholm in August.

floating solar power plant at the Kochi Refinery

♦ Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) inaugurated it’s floating solar power plant at the Kochi Refinery. ♦ The 3.2MW AC floating solar plant has been set up in the rainwater harvesting pond and covers eight acres of the waterbody, which has a total area of around 19 acres. ♦ The plant has been set up at a cost of Rs.28.93 crore.
