Varun Chakaravarthy

♦ Varun Chakaravarthy made history on 9 February 2025 by becoming the oldest cricketer to debut for India in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) since their inaugural match in 1974. ♦ The 33-year-old spinner received his maiden ODI cap from veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja ahead of the second match of the three-ODI series against England at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. ♦ At 33 years and 164 days, Varun is India's oldest ODI debutant outside of their first-ever match in the format. The record for the oldest debutant remains with Farokh Engineer, who was 36 years and 138 days old when he played his first ODI in 1974. ♦ Ajit Wadekar, also part of that historic 1974 match against England in Leeds, debuted at the age of 33 years and 103 days — making him the third-oldest after Engineer and Chakaravarthy. U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC)

♦ India has retained its third position on the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) annual list of the top 10 countries and regions for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) in 2024. ♦ 370 projects, covering 8.5 million gross square meters (GSM), were certified for LEED in India.  ♦ China topped the rankings with over 25 million GSM certified, followed by Canada with 10 million GSM.  ♦ This recognition reflects India's commitment to adopting sustainable and resilient building practices and contributing to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. ♦ LEED certifications in India are managed by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), which supports the country’s green building movement.

Startup Mahakumbh (SMK)

♦ The Embassy of India in Kathmandu organized the second India-Nepal Startup Connect: Curtain Raiser for Startup Mahakumbh (SMK) 2025 in the Kathmandu. ♦ It aims to provide a crucible for entrepreneurs and visionaries to collaborate across borders. ♦ The event started with a round table that included representatives from DPIIT, the Government of India, Startup India, the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), the Confederation of Nepalese Industries Young Entrepreneurs Forum (CNIYEF), Nepal Association for Software and IT Services Companies (NAS-IT), Fintech Alliance of Nepal (FAN), Robotics Association of Nepal (RAN), Nepal Hub (NHub), Asian Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs, Tribhuvan University, Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), Kathmandu University, and Nepali startups.

ISRO

♦ ISRO successfully carried out the ignition trial of the indigenous CE20 cryogenic engine powering the upper stage of LVM3, with a Multi-element igniter under vacuum conditions, which simulates the engine ignition in the vacuum condition of space. ♦ This test was carried out in the High Altitude Test Facility at ISRO Propulsion Complex, Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu.  ♦ This engine is crucial for the Gaganyaan mission, India's ambitious crewed space mission. ♦ During this test, the ignition of the engine Thrust Chamber was carried out with a multi-element igniter in vacuum, under the tank pressure conditions that are expected to prevail at the time of restarting the cryogenic engine in flight. ♦ The performance of the engine and the facility during the test was normal and as expected.

Nawaf Salam

♦ Lebanon has formed its first full-fledged government since 2022, ending a prolonged deadlock, with Nawaf Salam assuming the role of Prime Minister on 8 February 2025. ♦ President Joseph Aoun confirmed in a statement that he accepted the resignation of the previous caretaker government and signed a decree appointing Prime Minister Salam’s new administration.  ♦ Nawaf Salam is a former president of the International Court of Justice. ♦ The new cabinet, comprising 24 ministers evenly split between Christian and Muslim sects, was formed in less than a month after Mr. Salam’s appointment.

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL)

♦ The Ministry of Defence signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of 28 EON-51 systems for 11 New Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels and three Cadet Training Ships for the Indian Navy on 8 February 2025. The contract will cost over Rs.642 crore. ♦ EON-51 is an electro-optical fire control system that provides search, detection, and classification of targets using electro-optical and thermal imager devices.

Delhi Assembly Election

♦ The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Delhi Assembly Election, returning to power after 27 years by defeating the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). ♦ The election results were announced on 8 February 2025. The BJP won 48 seats in the 70-member legislative assembly, while the AAP bagged 22 seats. The third contender, Congress, was completely wiped out in the polls after failing to win even a single seat. ♦ The BJP’s vote share was 45.56%, while the AAP secured 43.57% votes and the Congress’s poll percentage was 6.34. ♦ A party winning more than the halfway mark of 35 seats forms the government in the National Capital.

ఎఫ్‌డీఐ

2000 ఏప్రిల్‌ నుంచి 2024 సెప్టెంబరు వరకు మన దేశంలోకి 1 ట్రిలియన్‌ డాలర్ల (సుమారు రూ.87 లక్షల కోట్ల) ఎఫ్‌డీఐ తరలివచ్చినట్లు కేంద్ర ఆర్థిక శాఖ తెలిపింది. సేవల విభాగం, కంప్యూటర్‌ సాఫ్ట్‌వేర్, హార్డ్‌వేర్, టెలికమ్యూనికేషన్స్, ట్రేడింగ్, నిర్మాణ రంగం, వాహన, రసాయనాలు, ఔషధ రంగాల్లోకి ఎఫ్‌డీఐ అధికంగా వచ్చింది. 2024-25 ఆర్థిక సంవత్సరం ఏప్రిల్‌-సెప్టెంబరులో ఎఫ్‌డీఐ, వార్షిక ప్రాతిపదికన 45% పెరిగి 29.79 బి.డాలర్ల (సుమారు రూ.2.59 లక్షల కోట్ల)కు చేరింది.

తమిళనాడులో ఆన్‌లైన్‌ జూదం నిషేధం

యువత ఆన్‌లైన్‌లో జూదం ఆడేందుకు ఎక్కువ ఆసక్తి చూపుతున్న నేపథ్యంలో 18 ఏళ్ల లోపు వారు డబ్బు చెల్లించి ఆన్‌లైన్‌ గేమ్‌లు ఆడేందుకు వీలు లేకుండా తమిళనాడు ఆన్‌లైన్‌ గేమింగ్‌ అథారిటీ నిషేధం విధించింది. ఆన్‌లైన్‌ జూదంలో డబ్బులు కోల్పోయి ఆత్మహత్యలు చేసుకుంటున్న ఘటనలు అధికమయ్యాయి. ఈ క్రమంలో ఆన్‌లైన్‌ గేమ్‌ల వల్ల కలిగే నష్టాలను తగ్గించడానికి రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం పలు చర్యలు చేపడుతోంది. ఇందులో భాగంగా ఆన్‌లైన్‌ గేమ్‌లను క్రమబద్ధీకరించేలా నిబంధనలను కఠినతరం చేస్తూ గేమింగ్‌ అథారిటీ 2025, ఫిబ్రవరి 9న ఉత్తర్వులు జారీ చేసింది. ఈ మేరకు 18 ఏళ్ల లోపువారు ఆన్‌లైన్‌లో నగదు చెల్లించి ఆడేందుకు నిషేధం విధించింది. అదేవిధంగా అర్ధరాత్రి నుంచి తెల్లవారుజామున 5 గంటల వరకు ఆన్‌లైన్‌ గేమ్‌లు ఆడకూడదని స్పష్టం చేసింది.

మణిపుర్‌ ముఖ్యమంత్రి రాజీనామా

మణిపుర్‌ ముఖ్యమంత్రి బీరెన్‌సింగ్‌ 2025, ఫిబ్రవరి 9న తన పదవికి రాజీనామా చేశారు. గవర్నర్‌ అజయ్‌కుమార్‌ భల్లాను కలిసి తనతో పాటు మంత్రివర్గమంతా రాజీనామా చేస్తున్నట్లు లేఖను అందించారు. దాన్ని గవర్నర్‌ ఆమోదించారు.  జాతుల వైరంతో 2023 మే నుంచి మణిపుర్‌లో చెలరేగిన అల్లర్లలో 250 మందికిపైగా ప్రాణాలు కోల్పోగా కొన్ని వేలమంది నిరాశ్రయులయ్యారు.
