Friedrich Merz

♦ Germany’s conservative leader, Friedrich Merz, was elected as the new Chancellor of the country on 6 May 2025. ♦ He secured a majority in the second round of voting in the Lower House of Parliament. ♦ A total of 325 of the 630 lawmakers voted in favour of Merz this time around, bringing him over the necessary 316 threshold. ♦ Earlier, in the first round, only 310 members voted for Merz. ♦ It was the first time since 1949 that a chancellor candidate had not won on the first attempt.

♦ Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, inaugurated Bharat Telecom 2025 in New Delhi on 6 May 2025. ♦ This was organised by the Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC) in collaboration with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). ♦ The two-day event concludes on 7 May 2025. ♦ It aims to showcase India’s capabilities in telecom equipment and next-generation digital technologies. ♦ The event also features an exclusive International Business Expo, with participation from over 130 foreign delegates representing more than 35 countries.

Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on 6 May 2025

♦ India and the United Kingdom have officially signed a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on 6 May 2025, that promises to reshape the future of bilateral trade, create new employment opportunities, and strengthen India’s integration with global markets. ♦ Under the agreement, India will reduce duties on British exports such as Scotch whisky and premium automobiles by up to 90 per cent, making these goods more accessible to Indian consumers. ♦ In exchange, the UK will eliminate tariffs on Indian textile imports, a move that could lower prices for British consumers and enhance the competitiveness of Indian exporters. ♦ Concluded after more than three years of negotiations, the deal is expected to boost the UK economy by up to Euro 5 billion annually and significantly expand trade and investment between the two nations. ♦ Bilateral trade between India and the United Kingdom rose to USD 21.34 billion in 2023-24, up from USD 20.36 billion the previous year. ♦ Currently, goods imported from India into the UK attract an average tariff of 4.2 percent.

♦ The 10th edition of Foreign Office Consultations between India and Slovenia was held in New Delhi on 6 May 2025. ♦ The Indian delegation was led by Tanmaya Lal, Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs, while the Slovenian side was headed by Marko Štucin, State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovenia. ♦ During the consultations, both sides conducted a comprehensive review of the progress made in various facets of bilateral cooperation. ♦ They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-Slovenia partnership, focusing on areas of mutual benefit.  ♦ The discussions covered a wide range of topics, including political relations, trade and investment, science and technology, innovation, space exploration, digitalisation, artificial intelligence (AI), migration and mobility, defence, agriculture, as well as people-to-people exchanges and cultural ties.
