అంతర్జాతీయ మాతృభూమి దినోత్సవాన్ని ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా ఏటా ఏప్రిల్‌ 22న నిర్వహిస్తారు. భూమి - దాని ఆవరణ వ్యవస్థలు మానవాళికి ఏ విధంగా ఉపయోగపడుతున్నాయి; ప్రజల జీవనోపాధిని మెరుగుపరుచుకోవడం, జీవవైవిధ్యాన్ని కాపాడుకోవడంలో పర్యావరణ ఆవశ్యకతను తెలియజేయడం ఈ రోజు ముఖ్య ఉద్దేశం. విశ్వంలో జీవులు మనగలిగే ఏకైక గ్రహం భూమి. జనాభా పెరుగుదల, వాతావరణ మార్పులు, సహజ - మానవకారక విపత్తులు, అటవీ నిర్మూలన, కాలుష్యం మొదలైన కారణాల వల్ల భూమి తన సహజత్వాన్ని కోల్పోతోంది. దీని వల్ల నేల నాణ్యత క్షీణించి, పంటలు పండించడం కష్టమవుతుంది. చారిత్రక నేపథ్యం 1969, అక్టోబరులో శాన్‌ఫ్రాన్సిస్కోలో జరిగిన యునెస్కో సమావేశంలో అమెరికాకు చెందిన పర్యావరణవేత్త జాన్‌ మెక్‌కానెల్‌ భూమి ప్రాముఖ్యాన్ని తెలిపేందుకు ఒక రోజును కేటాయించాలని ప్రతిపాదించారు. దీనికి మద్దతుగా గేలార్డ్‌ నెల్సన్‌ అనే యూఎస్‌ సెనేటర్‌ 1970, ఏప్రిల్‌ 22న మొదటిసారి అమెరికాలో ‘ఎర్త్‌ డే’గా నిర్వహించారు.  2009లో యూఎన్‌ జనరల్‌ అసెంబ్లీ ఏటా ఏప్రిల్‌ 22న ‘అంతర్జాతీయ మాతృభూమి దినోత్సవం’గా జరపాలని తీర్మానించింది.

హెచ్‌డీఎఫ్‌సీ బ్యాంక్‌

దేశంలో రూ.15 లక్షల కోట్ల మార్కెట్‌ విలువ సాధించిన మూడో సంస్థగా హెచ్‌డీఎఫ్‌సీ బ్యాంక్‌ నిలిచింది. ఇంతకుముందు రిలయన్స్‌ ఇండస్ట్రీస్, టాటా కన్సల్టెన్సీ సర్వీసెస్‌ ఈ ఘనత సాధించాయి. 2025, ఏప్రిల్‌ 22న ఇంట్రాడేలో రూ.1970.65 వద్ద రికార్డు గరిష్ఠాన్ని తాకిన హెచ్‌డీఎఫ్‌సీ బ్యాంక్‌ షేరు, చివరకు 1.78% లాభపడి రూ.1,961.90 వద్ద ముగిసింది. ఏప్రిల్‌ 9 నుంచి ఈ షేరు 11.12% పెరగడంతో, హెచ్‌డీఎఫ్‌సీ బ్యాంక్‌ మార్కెట్‌ విలువ ఇప్పటికి రూ.1.50 లక్షల కోట్లు పెరిగి రూ.15.01 లక్షల కోట్లకు చేరింది.  రిలయన్స్‌ ఇండస్ట్రీస్‌ రూ.17.46 లక్షల కోట్ల మార్కెట్‌ విలువతో అగ్రస్థానంలో ఉండగా, టీసీఎస్‌ (రూ.12 లక్షల కోట్లు) 3వ స్థానంలో ఉంది.

ఆస్కార్‌ పురస్కారాల్లో ‘ఏఐ’

సినీ పరిశ్రమలో చోటు చేసుకుంటున్న మార్పుల దృష్ట్యా 2025లో కృత్రిమ మేధ (ఏఐ) సాంకేతికతతో రూపొందించిన చిత్రాలను కూడా పరిగణనలోకి తీసుకోనున్నట్లు అకాడమీ ఆఫ్‌ మోషన్‌ పిక్చర్స్‌ ఆర్ట్స్‌ అండ్‌ సైన్సెస్‌ వెల్లడించింది. 2026 మార్చి 15న 98వ ఆస్కార్‌ అవార్డుల వేడుక లాస్‌ ఏంజెలిస్‌లో జరగనున్నట్లు తెలిపింది. ఏఐ చిత్రాలు ఇతర చిత్రాలపై ప్రభావం చూపవని, మానవ మేధస్సుకే ఎక్కువ ప్రాధాన్యతనిస్తామని స్పష్టం చేసింది అకాడమీ సంస్థ. 2025 జనవరి నుంచి డిసెంబరు వరకు విడుదలైన చిత్రాలు ఆస్కార్‌ బరిలో పోటీపడనున్నాయి.

లిమా (పెరూ)లో జరిగిన ఐఎస్‌ఎస్‌ఎఫ్‌ ప్రపంచకప్‌ షూటింగ్‌లో భారత్‌ మూడో స్థానంలో నిలిచింది. ప్రతిష్టాత్మక టోర్నీలో భారత్‌ ఏడు పతకాలు సాధించింది. అందులో 2 స్వర్ణాలు, 4 రజతాలు, ఒక కాంస్యం ఉన్నాయి. చైనా, అమెరికా వరుసగా తొలి రెండు స్థానాల్లో నిలిచాయి. చివరి రోజు (ఏప్రిల్‌ 22) జరిగిన ట్రాప్‌ మిక్స్‌డ్‌ టీమ్‌ ఈవెంట్లో పృథ్వీరాజ్‌ తొండమాన్‌- ప్రగతి దూబె జోడీ అయిదో స్థానంలో నిలిచింది. లక్షయ్‌- నీరూ జంట 13వ స్థానంతో సరిపెట్టుకుంది.

♦ International Mother Earth Day (World Earth Day) is observed globally every year on 22 April to raise awareness about the planet’s sustainability. ♦ The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, initiated by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. ♦ The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 22 April as International Mother Earth Day through a resolution adopted in 2009.  ♦ 2025 theme: ‘Our Power, Our Planet.’

India’s smartphone exports crossed Rs.2 lakh crore

♦ India’s smartphone exports crossed Rs.2 lakh crore for the first time in the financial year 2024–25 (FY25). ♦ This achievement, announced by Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, showcases the impact of the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and India’s strengthening position in global supply chains.  ♦ Smartphone exports rose by 54% compared to the previous financial year (2023-24), as global value chains (GVCs) continued to integrate with India’s growing electronics manufacturing sector. ♦ The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) had projected smartphone exports to touch $20 billion (around Rs.1.68 lakh crore) in FY25, but actual figures exceeded expectations by a wide margin. ♦ Apple emerged as the single largest contributor to this export surge, with its iPhone supply chain accounting for nearly 70% of total smartphone exports. ♦ Foxconn’s facility in Tamil Nadu alone contributed about 50% of all shipments, recording a 40% year-on-year growth.

International Monetary Fund (IMF)

♦ The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected India’s GDP growth to remain above 6 percent, despite all the odds amid rising global trade tensions. ♦ The IMF released the April 2025 World Economic Outlook (WEO) report in Washington on 22 April 2025. ♦ The outlook report pegs the Indian economy to grow at 6.2 percent in Fiscal Year 2025-26 and 6.3 percent in 2026-27.  ♦ The IMF expects global growth to decrease to 2.8 percent this year and 3 percent next year (2026), indicating a cumulative downgrade of around 0.8 percentage points, following.   ♦ While for China, the growth projection has been slashed to 4 percent for 2025 and 4.6 percent for next year (2026), the US is expected to be more affected with 1.8 percent GDP growth forecast this year, followed by 1.7 percent in 2026.

India-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Council (SPC) meeting.

♦ Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman held high-level bilateral talks in Jeddah on 22 April 2025. ♦ They co-chaired the second India-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Council (SPC) meeting. ♦ The engagement marked a major step forward in strengthening the multifaceted ties between the two nations, with new initiatives launched across key sectors such as Defence, energy, investment, and cultural cooperation. ♦ During the meeting, both sides agreed to establish two new Ministerial Committees one on Defence Cooperation and another on Tourism and Cultural Cooperation, under the framework of the SPC. ♦ This brings the total number of committees under the Council to four, the others being the Political, Consular and Security Cooperation Committee, and the Economy, Energy, Investment and Technology Committee.
