World Tuberculosis Day
World Tuberculosis Day

♦ World Tuberculosis Day is observed every year on March 24 to spread awareness about tuberculosis (TB) and the need to control and eventually end this disease. TB is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It mainly affects the lungs. The history of this day goes back to 1882, when Dr Robert Koch discovered the bacteria that cause TB. This was a major step in understanding the disease and finding ways to treat it. In 1982, the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease suggested marking March 24 as World TB Day. The idea was to remember Koch’s discovery and raise awareness about TB. The first official World TB Day was observed in 1983, and since then, it has been marked every year.
