♦ The Telangana state government has officially implemented the Scheduled Caste (SC) Categorisation of Reservations Act 2025 on April 14.
♦ As per the government order, the 56 Scheduled Caste communities in Telangana have now been divided into three groups to ensure equitable distribution of benefits among the SC sub-groups.
♦ Telangana has become the first State into the country to operationalise the classification of the Scheduled Castes after the Supreme Court’s land mark judgment on 2024, August 1 upholding the constitutionality of sub-classifying the SCs and Scheduled Tribes (STs) to grant separate quotas for the most marginalised groups within these communities.
♦ The GO was issued following consent from the State governor for the Bill which was passed by the State Legislature last month.
♦ This classification is expected to guide future policies on reservations in education, employment, and political representation.
♦ The State Government had announced its resolve to enhance the reservations for Scheduled Castes further based on the data obtained after Census 2026.
