Teacher’s Day is celebrated every year on September 5. The day also marks the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
India’s first Vice President and the second President, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was also a distinguished scholar and philosopher.
When Radhakrishnan became President of India, some of his students sought his permission to celebrate his birthday.
However, he humbly suggested that instead of celebrating his birthday, the day should be observed as Teacher’s Day, dedicated to honouring all teachers.
During his presidency from 1962 to 1967, Dr Radhakrishnan consistently preferred modest recognition, stressing that the day would hold greater meaning if it acknowledged the role of teachers in nation-building.
Born on September 5, 1888, in Tiruttani of Tamil Nadu, Dr Radhakrishnan was one of the most influential philosophers of modern India.
